The player takes control of an unknown test subject who is placed in a virtual reality training course. The player does not use the traditional  aperture science handheld portal device used in the other portal games, instead using a device capable of attracting objects from long distances (named the "Aperture Science Apparatus Retrieval Tool") as well as a teleportation device (named the "Aperture Science Instant Teleportation Device").
