As the story progresses, she and the player are exposed to the rise and fall of Cave Johnson and the history of Aperture Science. As the player navigates their way through the ancient testing facilities, they learn more about Cave's increasingly desperate search for test subjects until his eventual death. During his final days, the story points out that GLaDOS may be Caroline, Johnson's right-hand woman. This was an attempt to merge man and machine, as well as attempting to cure Johnson of his "moon poisoning".
