That is not a panel. That's a crusher. We sell those too.

The Crusher is a hazard element present in several testing environments, introduced in Portal 2. A player who makes contact with a crusher will be forced to the nearest hard surface and will be killed instantly. Crushers appear as large grey panels with many large, steel spikes firmly attached.

A Crusher in Portal 2.

Crushers become more frequent during the final parts of the game (particularly in Chapter 9: "The Part Where He Kills You"), and also appear frequently in co-op mode.

Function

Any object, including the player, will be perforated instantly upon contact with a crusher. When crushing, a loud crunching noise is made to warn the player of its danger, and to indicate to move out of the way quickly.

In co-op mode, if the player comes in contact with a crusher while floating in an Excursion Funnel, the damage caused will be periodic until the player moves away or dies.

Trivia

  • Crushers were intended to appear in the original Portal but were removed at early stages of game development due to complexity they add to test chambers.
  • However they do appear in Portal: Flash Version (an 2D flash game released before Portal itself_ and in Portal: The Flash Version MapPack ( hardcore mod to the actual game based on levels from flash version).
