Portal is Free is a video which was released by Valve on May 13, 2010 in order to promote Portal 2. The video takes the form of an Aperture Laboratories information video, which advertises the existence of a "free Portal kit" (the original Portal). The purpose of the video was to bring attention to the fact that Portal was made available for free on Steam for a brief period, in order to promote the future release of Portal 2.

Made possible in part by a generous grant from... [Aperture Science theme plays as the Aperture logo appears.] [An animated building layout is shown, filled with various stick figures similar to those in the Portal teaser. Zoom in to a meeting room, where a projector screen is rolled down, and "Portal: Huge success" is shown.] GLaDOS: For over three years, the Aperture Science Portal Project has been the cornerstone of our aggressive recruitment program. [Stick figures on a conveyor belt from an Aperture shipment truck are handed retail box copies of Portal.] GLaDOS: Thanks to Portal, we can weed out test subjects, who, when confronted with science, may exhibit any or all of the following personality flaws: GLaDOS: Cowardice, [The test subject in front drops their copy of Portal and runs away] GLaDOS: Impaired motor skills, [An orange portal appears in front of a subject, who steps through and falls off] GLaDOS: Poor judgment, [A subject turns around and shows a Black Mesa tattoo] GLaDOS: Fear of heights, [The conveyor belt lowers, and the subject falls with a Wilhelm scream.] GLaDOS: Weights, [A Weighted Companion Cube from Portal falls on a subject] GLaDOS: Depths, [A subject sinks into a tub of goo] GLaDOS: Bullets, [A subject is shot by two turrets] GLaDOS: And fire. [A subject ignites] [An office desk with a chair and a computer assembles, and a stick-figure appears and sits on the chair.] GLaDOS: Now, our marketing engineers have discovered a way to offer consumers a home version of the Portal Project...for free! [The stick figure loads the program on the computer, which shows a clip from the Portal teaser. The stick-figure cheerfully puts its arms up while a speech bubble appears with a green $ dollar symbol overlaid with a red "no" symbol.] [The stick figure is moved up in a vertical bar graph while spinning on the chair. Zoom out to show the entire graph. The stick-figure falls off the bar along with the chair as the view zooms back out to the meeting room.] GLaDOS: Use your free Portal kit to measure the value of those around you, and find a companion for the upcoming Cooperative Portal Testing Initiative. [The projector screen shows "Portal 2: coming soon" and the stick figures in the room cheerfully put their arms up.] GLaDOS: Good luck. [The Steam and Portal logos fade in.] |
