Black Mesa is a scientific research corporation in the Half-Life universe, and the main competitor to Aperture Science. Black Mesa has shown wide variety of scientific interests in areas such as nuclear energy, weapons, robotics, physics research, and extradimensional discovery, research, and exploitation with main goal of teleportation technology. Unlike Aperture Science, Black Mesa is a government supported agency and receives near unlimited funding both from investors and the government.

It is unknown whether the universe of Half-Life and the remaining Black Mesa personnel still exists in the timeline of Portal 2, since the amount of time passed after Chell getting escorted back into the facility and awakened in the courtesy call is unknown, but assumed to be very, very long.
