'''''[http://www.thinkwithportals.com/comic/ Portal 2: Lab Rat]''''' is a comic released in April of 2011. It can be found online and in the "Extras" Section of ''[[Portal 2]]''. It was a joint project between Valve and established comic book artists, such as {{W|Michael Avon Oeming}} and {{W|Jay Pinkerton}}, the comic depicts the events between the end of ''[[Portal]]'' and the beginning of ''[[Portal 2]]''.

== Plot summary ==
The comic follows [[Doug Rattman]], a lab worker at [[Aperture Science]] {{Spoiler|with a history of {{W|schizophrenia}}, who survives [[GLaDOS]]'s attempt to}} murder {{Spoiler|every employee in the Aperture Science facility when she is first turned on. Sneaking through the facility, he watches from the shadows as [[Chell]] is tested by GLaDOS. Following several flashbacks of Rattman's employment at Aperture Science, he witnesses firsthand the ending events of ''Portal.'' After Chell is abducted by the [[Party Escort Bot]], he delves back into the crumbling complex in an attempt to rescue her. Upon finding Chell, he is unable to release her from her solitary confinement and, noticing that power systems are beginning to fail, he patches her chamber into a reserve grid, saving her life while at the same time trapping her for an unknown period of time. The comic ends with the injured Rattman crawling into a cryo-unit and}} putting himself to sleep.
== Trivia ==
* On page 7, a book titled ''"Art Therapy - The Bennet Way"'' can be seen during the explosion, explaining why Doug Rattman is creating murals throughout the Aperture facility. He uses art as an an attempt to help his schizophrenia. "Art Therapy" is the name of the co-op DLC later added to Portal 2.
* On page 8, there is a message in binary at the bottom of Chell's Application form. When converted to {{W|ASCII}} it reads, "The cake is a lie."
* {{Spoiler|On Page 10, Rattman's statment that "he would rather have gone to the moon" may be foreshadowing of the ending of Portal 2.}}
* On page 13 of the comic, the Gravity Gun and Combine Health Dispenser from ''Half-Life 2'', and the Black Mesa Health Station and H.E.V. Suit Charger from ''Half-Life'' make a cameo appearance.
* In one of Rattman's lines on page 25, he says "Both alive and dead, until someone opens the box". This is a reference to {{W|Schrodinger's Cat}}, a popular scientific theory involving a cat sealed inside a box.

[[Buttons]] is a game [[Mechanics|mechanic]] used throughout the ''Portal'' series. They are used within [[Test Chambers]], and can be activated...

== Uses ==
Buttons are present in virtually all test chambers and, when activated, trigger a variety of effects. Buttons can either control the flow of Excursion Funnels, open and close hatches, release [[Weighted Storage Cube]]s, or even open and close the gate leading to the exit. It's up to the player to figure out how and when to use the button, or buttons, in order to proceed.
[[File:Portal 2 Heavy Duty Super-Colliding Super Button active.png|right|100px]]

The '''1500 Megawatt Aperture Science Heavy Duty Super-Colliding Super Button'' is a receptacle that can be triggered by the weights of player characters, [[#Weighted Storage Cube|Weighted Storage Cube]]s, [[#Edgeless Safety Cube|Edgeless Safety Cube]]s, and [[#Frankenturret|Frankenturret]]s. The button was introduced in ''Portal'' and remained prevalent in ''Portal 2''.

An older prototype variant from the 50-70s era of the Super Buttons can be seen in the ''Portal 2'' single-player chapters ''The Fall'' and ''The Reunion''.

'''Weighted Storage Cube Receptacles''', as obvious by its name, serves as a receptacle only for the [[#Weighted Storage Cube|Weighted Storage Cube]]s, even though it can also activate using [[Weighted Companion Cube]]s and [[Discouragement Redirection Cube]]s. This receptacle is only present in the co-op campaign of ''Portal 2'', though it is available in the [[Puzzle Creator]].

The Storage Cube must be placed securely inside the receptacle in order for test subjects to proceed. Although its appearance is similar to the [[Heavy Duty Super-Colliding Super Button|Super Button]], it cannot be activated by the weight of test subjects or any other objects being placed upon it.
[[File:Edgeless Safety Cube Receptacle.png|right|100px]]
[[File:Edgeless Safety Cube Receptacle active.png|right|100px]]
The Edgeless Safety Cube Receptacle is a receptacle for the [[Cubes#Edgeless Safety Cube|Edgeless Safety Cube]], introduced in ''Portal 2''. The Cube must be placed securely inside the receptacle in order for the player to proceed.

Edgeless Safety Cubes and their receptacles only appear as testing elements in the game's cooperative campaign and the [[Perpetual Testing Initiative]]. However, an Edgeless Safety Cube can be seen among the "garbage" in [[Portal 2 Chapter 2 Test Chamber 6]].

The Contraption Cube Receptacle is exclusively featured in the [[Portal 2 - Education Version|educational version of Portal 2]]. Although it is designed for the [[Cube#Contraption Cube|Contraption Cube]], the Receptacle will not recognize the Contraption Cube or activate any puzzle elements which are connected with it. Additionally, it appears entirely black in-game, when the model itself has different colors.

'''Cores''' (also referred to as '''spheres''', '''personality cores/spheres''', or '''Aperture Science Artificial Personality Constructs''') are machines designed to house advanced artificial intelligence, mostly unique for their ability to express emotions. Cores generally come in two varieties: spherical and input. Spheres are the standard form, used as a standalone body for Personality Constructs and in android bodies like [[Atlas]]'. Input cores, by contrast, are elliptical in shape and are used for the [[Turrets#Sentry Turret|turrets]] and in android bodies like [[P-Body]]'s. Spherical cores that do not have limbs are generally attached to management rails in the [[Aperture Science]] computer-aided Enrichment Center.

{{spoiler|The raw spherical appearance of the cores are heavily featured throughout the finale events of both ''[[Portal]]'' and the single-player campaign in ''[[Portal 2]]''.}}

== Function ==
Developed by [[Aperture Science]] technicians, [[GLaDOS]] is the earliest known personality core - specifically designed for becoming the Enrichment Center's overseer. The next cores developed were given the purpose of counteracting GLaDOS' destructive behavior (such as flooding test chambers and other vital parts of the facility with [[neurotoxin]]) by integrating with her subconscious and altering her personality.

Often present in the form of spherical shapes, these cores are a more simplistic design as their purpose had been more at hand instead. This contrasts with the majority of the designs of Aperture androids in the Enrichment Center that are personality core-based such as [[Atlas]] (enclosed core design), [[P-body]] (core inputs), and [[Turrets#Sentry Turret|turrets]] (also core inputs).

{{spoiler|After the events of ''Portal'', it became apparent that some of the unused (deactivated) cores kept in storage have been automatically reactivated by the facility to maintain the Enrichment Center. Under extreme circumstances/time, these cores have been unable to compensate, and have failed to do so. Some cores become corrupted (the cause of which is unknown, although it could be inferred that if the cores are inhabited by once humans (like GLaDOS) corruption could be caused by the human going insane from being trapped within an AI).}}

__TOC__
{{Clr}}

== Personality cores ==
As the name implies, each core has its own unique personality and behavior, which can be incorporated into the central core when they are physically attached to it. Most cores were unneeded and deactivated. {{spoiler|These were later reactivated after the destruction of GLaDOS in ''Portal''.}}

{{spoiler text|During the conflict with GLaDOS in ''Portal'', whenever [[Chell]] would drop a personality core into the [[Emergency Intelligence Incinerator|incinerator]], not only did GLaDOS experience pain each time one was destroyed, she also began to lose some of her reinforced prominent personality traits. These include her references to [[cake]], and her moral values, which resulted in a much stronger desire to kill Chell.}}

The general form of a personality core is a large, spherical construct roughly a foot in diameter resembling an eyeball, containing sensors (with the "eye" presumably being the core's camera), two handles (possibly dating from when humans had to transport and handle them manually), and other equipment, such as ports to hold them onto a security rail for them to move on, or to plug into the central computer. The cores in ''Portal 2'' also have eyelids.

=== Central Core ===
{{Main|GLaDOS}}
[[Image:GLaDOS P2.png|right|170px|GLaDOS, a central core.]]

The '''central core''' is the highest rank of all Aperture Science Personality Cores in the Enrichment Center, given to the core hardwired into the enormous robotic body in the Central AI Chamber.

A central core has the power to control and regulate the entire Enrichment Center, including the camera feeds, test chamber assembly and storage, turret production lines, and neurotoxin.

{{spoiler|During the events of ''Portal 2'', it becomes apparent that any form of personality core would be more than qualified to be hardwired into the mainframe to become a central core. This is a feature preset by Aperture as a means of replacing corrupted central AI; and if the central core happens to disagree with their impeachment, a Stalemate Resolution Associate will have to force the replacement procedure.}}

[[GLaDOS]], who was designed with the sole purpose of being the central core herself, has her own unique shape that is quite different from the other personality cores, with an oblong white "body", black "face", and a yellow "eye". {{Spoiler|Her "eye" appears to contain her identity, made clear when it was stuck into a potato during the events of ''Portal 2''.}}
{{Main|Morality Core}}

The '''morality core''' is one of the more important cores attached on GLaDOS in ''Portal''. It is a core with a purple "eye" and two dots just beneath it. {{spoiler|It was installed onto GLaDOS during the events of "Lab Rat," in order to prevent her from filling the Enrichment Center with [[neurotoxin]].}}

{{spoiler|It also seems to be what allows GLaDOS to keep her weapons under control, as she stated that she was unable to deactivate her [[Turrets#Rocket Turret|rocket turret]] once the core was incinerated.}}

{{spoiler|It is the first core collected and incinerated by Chell, which causes GLaDOS to begin losing her moral traits and once again start filling the room with neurotoxin.}} Unlike other cores, and much like Chell, the morality core is mute. {{spoiler|The disposal of this core is reflected in GLaDOS' apathetic attitude and utter disregard for life at the end of ''Portal'' and prevalent in ''Portal 2'', though how much of this was under the core's control is uncertain due to the resurfacing of these emotions in GLaDOS after re-discovering her Genetic Lifeform component: [[Caroline]].}}

The second core attached to GLaDOS is the '''curiosity core'''. It is the core with an orange "eye" and four dots beneath it. It has a tendency to constantly ask questions, ranging from its surroundings to Chell, to where it is going.
GLaDOS' third core, the '''intelligence core''', (referred to as the "crazy core" in the subtitles), has a blue "eye" with a huge pupil with six dots beneath it. GLaDOS does not make references to [[Cake]] in ''Portal 2'', and it is presumed that this is because the core was destroyed in ''Portal''.}}
The last core attached to GLaDOS is the '''anger core'''. It has a red "eye" with eight dots beneath it. It is also referred to as the "emotion core" and the "aggressive core". Rather than speak, the Core snarls and growls ferociously at Chell. These snarls and growls were later used in Valve's game ''Left 4 Dead''. {{Spoiler|Once Chell puts the anger core into the incinerator, GLaDOS begins to implode. In ''Portal 2'', GLaDOS, due to the loss of this core, sounds very mellow, and barely expresses any emotional indications of hostility; she remains resentful over her attempted destruction and makes snarky comments towards Chell while being tested early in the game.}}

{{spoiler|It was not long before it was revealed by GLaDOS that Wheatley was originally designed by the Aperture Science technicians with the express purpose of rendering GLaDOS less dangerous during her initial activation, via attaching Wheatley onto her to generate an infinite stream of flawed suggestions to distract her.}}

{{spoiler|It was thought that this would prevent her from killing the scientists when activated and improve the operations of the facility. == Corrupted cores ==
{{Quotation|'''GLaDOS'''|Corrupted cores! We're in luck.|sound=GLaDOS_potatos_sp_a4_finale4_intro02.wav}}
Due to technical difficulties over time, a core may be detected as a '''corrupted core''' and would be subject to disposal. However, if the corrupted core is the central core, a substitute core must be present in a core receptacle in order to initiate a core transfer. Central core corruption will not be detected if another core is not present. This is because other cores would not usually be present, except for core transfer. Once a substitute core is found, both cores must agree or disagree on the core transfer procedure. If one agrees while the other disagrees, the transfer process cannot occur unless a Stalemate Resolution Associate is present in order to press the stalemate resolution button, which will initiate the core transfer process once the Associate has returned to the Central Chamber.

{{spoiler text|During the fight against Wheatley in ''Portal 2'', GLaDOS/PotatOS summons three corrupted cores to Chell for her to attach to Wheatley in order to make him corrupt enough to initiate another core transfer procedure.}}

All three Corrupted Cores are voiced by [[w:Nolan North|Nolan North]]. Each of their corruption levels is 25%, as indicated according to the [[Announcer]] when they are attached to Wheatley. And because the corruption level was already at 25% when the final fight with Wheatley started, it may be surmised that Wheatley himself is also a Corrupted Core.

GLaDOS was 80% corrupt when she was replaced in the game by Wheatley. Due to her behavior change after being put in the potato and then "reinstalled" at the end of Portal 2, it may be surmised that this reduced her own corruption to 0%. This change in GLaDOS (as well as Wheatley's behavior) further indicates that when a core is corrupt, it becomes irrational, in other words, "crazy" or "insane" by human standards, and even paranoid and homicidal.

Its key personality trait is its often-repeated desire to travel to outer space. {{spoiler text|It finally gets to live its dream of going to space when it is sucked through the portal that connects the remaining blob of conversion gel to the surface of the moon.}} The Final Hours of Portal 2 reveals Valve's inspiration for the Space Core: an Oregon Coast Aquarium ad with a goldfish rapidly and repeatedly humming, blurting, and stating that he would like to go to the aquarium, much like the Space Core does. {{spoiler text|The Space Sphere is stuck in space, and is later known for getting bored of space and wanting to back home.}}

Another core found in Old Aperture claims to be Cave Johnson and pleads for help. Once the player does though, Cave accuses them of "slacking off". The core's eye is also square-shaped compared to other core eyes.

== Trivia ==
* The bomb model used in ''Portal 2'' is named 'personality_sphere_angry' within the game files, suggesting the Anger core was to make an appearance in the sequel.
** The bomb model also possesses similar textures and various typical personality core animations that can be viewed in the Model Viewer in the Authoring Tools. These include a stationary animation, a test animation where the core aimlessly looks around, and an angry animation where it twitches violently.

* In early screenshots released prior to the ''Portal 2'' E3 teaser trailer, the texture of personality cores were yet to receive detailing and minor scratches, as the textures of the plating were matte white. Since then the textures have been greatly improved, and compared to ''[[Portal]]'', the Cores from then to the retail version have a wider range of emotions.

* [[Poker Night 2]] features a bounty price by GLaDOS called the "Paranoia Core," who behaves similarly to the Fact Sphere describing numerous events as well as being paranoid.

* Where the corrupt cores are first encountered in Portal 2, another core is being held above to illuminate them, moving weakly which confirms it is active. This core never makes another appearance and has no lines. Upon closer inspection inside reveals that it is an Adventure Sphere reskin, with the eye aperture constricted.

* Personality cores that serve basic tasks are surprisingly nice and polite, including {{Sentry Turrets|sentry turrets}}, the [[Oracle Turret]], and {{Frankenturret|frankenturrets}}, proved by their voice lines, proof being that one of them refers to Chell as "lady".
** But free-thinking cores (such as Wheatley, [[Adventure Core]]) do not.

* The morality core has one dot on each side, and it's the first core to be detached and incinerated. The curiosity core has two dots (although on only one side), and it's the second core to be detached. The intelligence core has three dots on each side, and the anger core has four.
{{Quotation|'''GLaDOS'''|Momentum, a function of mass and velocity, is conserved between portals. In layman's terms: Speedy-thing goes in, speedy-thing comes out.|sound=GLaDOS_06_part1_success_2-1.wav}}

'''Portals''' are the primary gameplay [[Mechanics|mechanic]] of the ''Portal'' series. Portals can only be placed on white, stationary (except for one occasion in [[Portal 2|Portal 2]]), flat surfaces by an [[Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device]], and works in pairs thereby allowing two-way movement through each portal.

== Overview ==

Portals in a pair act as a direct link between one another. Anything that goes into one portal comes instantly out the other. Objects going at high speed into a portal (such as falling into one from great height) will maintain their speed when coming out of the other, giving the player the ability to launch themselves or other objects through the air. Portals are also capable of continuing any sort of beam, specifically the [[Excursion Funnel]]s, [[Thermal Discouragement Beam]]s, and [[Hard Light Bridge]]s. If only one portal in a pair exists at the moment, the existing portal is an oval completely filled in with color. When attempting to enter an unpaired portal, it will act as a solid wall. When both portals in a pair exist, they will appear to be like windows. When looking through one portal, you can see directly out the other. When a portal is linked, you can identify which portal it is by looking at its colored border.

Once the player obtains the Portal Device, they can create a portal on a surface by aiming at the spot they want to put the portal and pressing the primary or secondary fire key. If the player has only acquired the Single Portal Device, both fire keys produce the primary portal color. If they have acquired the Dual Portal Device, the primary fire key produces the primary color and the secondary fire key produces the secondary color. Portals cannot be placed on surfaces that are not made of the appropriate material (white walls usually indicate this material), moving, not flat, or not large enough for a portal to fit onto it. Portals also cannot be placed while looking through currently existing portals.

{{Spoiler|Portals are very likely moving at the [[Wikipedia:Speed of light|speed of light]], this is proven by the time taken to shoot a portal to the moon in the finale of ''[[Portal 2]]''.}}

Portals transmit matter and light, this is proven by the fact that {{Tooltip|Excursion Funnels, Thermal Discouragement Beams and Hard Light Bridges|GLaDOS claimed that these matters are made from pure light}} can pass through portals

In ''[[Portal]]'' and the single-player campaign of ''[[Portal 2]]'', protagonist and test subject [[Chell]] can create blue (primary) and orange (secondary) portals with her version of the Dual Portal Gun. In ''Portal 2''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s [[co-op]] campaign, each robot test subject possesses individual portal colors in order to differentiate them; [[Atlas]] creates cyan (primary) and indigo (secondary) portals, whereas [[P-body]] creates yellow (primary) and red (secondary) portals.

=== Pre-release designs ===
The portals have had several changes in design before the final release of ''Portal'' in October 10, 2007, as evident in some trailers and screenshots.<ref>[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TluRVBhmf8w portal orientation video 1] on YouTube.com</ref> Even Earlier development screenshots from ''Portal'' revealed that the original colors for the portals were light blue (primary-fire) and purple (secondary-fire), with the portals more resembling like rifts ripped into a dimension than the simpler oval designs in the current series. Later, the purple color was replaced with red, akin to [[P-Body]]'s secondary-fire in ''Portal 2''. At some point, the developers decided to maintain the blue and orange color schemes previously used as portals in ''[[Narbacular Drop]]''.

==Portal 2==
{{spoiler|[[Atlas]] and [[P-body]] should enter even portals one after another otherwise they may collide which may even cause death one or both ([[Portal 2 Co-op Course 3 Chamber 4]]).<ref>[[March 25, 2023 Patch]] or [[version]] "Protocol version 2001, Exe version 2.0.0.1 (portal2), Exe build: 19:15:46 Mar 3 2023 (8873) (620)"</ref> One can constantly jump and second can crouch before [[flinging]].}}

== Gameplay exploits==
=== Reportalling ===
With some movements, the player is able to boost their momentum when traveling through two portals placed on the floor by using their primary or secondary fire key as they exit the portal they are going through, respectively. This is caused by the portals giving a push to the player from a portal if the portal is re-placed somewhere else (or in this case, in the same place).
=== Portal bumping ===
When placing a portal onto another portal, the other portal will get bumped to a position that is next to the first placed one. By using this glitch, players can skip some chambers in both games - [[Portal Test Chamber 16]] (just the first speech and the glass clip), [[Portal Test Chamber 17]] (all the way to the incinerator room), and in the second game the player can get into some observation rooms with this glitch (for example, the one in the first laser relay map).
