Portal: Prelude is an unofficial prequel to the game Portal, developed by an independent team of three. The game features a brand new storyline focusing on the pre-GLaDOS era of Aperture Science where test subjects are monitored by employees of the facility. The game spans across 8 chapters covering 19 test chambers which follow a gradual learning curve similar to that of Portal. In addition, 48 challenge maps and 6 advanced test chambers are included with the mod.

Many gameplay elements from Portal make a return in Prelude, while entirely new gameplay devices were created exclusively for the mod, such as localised gravitational fields. Portal: Prelude also features over 400 lines of voice acting, with English, French and German subtitles.

Synopsis
{{Spoiler|block=yes|Portal: Prelude opens up on much the same manner as Portal, with the player, Abby, waking up from a brief detention in a Relaxation Vault. The player is greeted by Mike, an overseer of the Enrichment Center, and another employee named Eric.
Shortly thereafter, the player receives a Handheld Portal Device. However, this Portal Gun is not fully upgraded, and, unlike in Portal and Portal 2, can only shoot orange portals.
After the player proceeds through a number of tests, he or she receives a Dual Portal Device.
The player proceeds through more test chambers, encountering new people and gameplay mechanics, such as Peter and Localised Gravitational Fields. The Weighted Companion Cube also makes an appearance, though like in Portal the player must euthanize it at the end of the chamber.
After the player completes the final chamber, they return their device and proceed to their party. However, the party must be delayed because of the activation of GLaDOS. The player gets to watch the activation of GLaDOS. However, it's Morality Core was not installed, and she kills most of the employees in the room. Mike shuts the whole system down, but the auxillary power will turn on in a few minutes, so the player must quickly find the morality core and install it on GLaDOS.
The player finds a new Portal Gun, and proceeds to find the Morality Core. However, by the time they get back to GLaDOS's room, she has already awoken and has started filling the facility with a deadly Neurotoxin. After evading GLaDOS's traps, the player finally manages to install the Morality Core. However, their effort is in vain, and the deadly Neurotoxin supposedly kills the player.}}
Trivia
Though other female characters are mentioned, all of the employees the player sees in the mod are men and have nearly the exact same design, excluding the party hats near the end of the game.

The Excursion Funnel is a game mechanic introduced in Portal 2. The mechanism creates a wide cylindrical beam of blue light that the player may enter or exit at any time. It seems to defy the laws of gravity, allowing anything/anyone who enters to become weightless and travel along the path of the Funnel. Anyone or anything caught inside the Funnel travels in the direction that the Funnel is flowing in, unless the Funnel is reversed, which is usually accomplished through the activation of a button.

Excursion Funnels can pass through portals and can cross vast distances, and can, therefore, be used to solve puzzles in which Funnels may not initially appear to be useful.

Excursion Funnels can also act as a mode of transportation for the player or objects across large gaps, as well as Gels. Gels caught in the Excursion Funnel will slowly follow the direction of the Funnel until the substance collides with a wall or until the Funnel is deactivated, making funnels useful for coating large areas in a short amount of time.

Trivia
*When inside an Excursion Funnel in the single player campaign, soothing music plays, possibly to relate the tactile sensation of being weightless in a funnel. All other sound is blocked out or significantly dampened.

*Because of the fine print in the early Portal 2 trailers, many people have come to believe that the funnel is made of liquid asbestos. This theory is supported by the liquid ambiance one hears while traversing a funnel, but is refuted by the fact that the funnel does not exhibit any other liquid qualities and does not refract light in the way clear gel or water does.

*Rather, it seems to be related to the Hard-Light Bridge. Both objects have a translucent blue color with sine waves running along their length and can be beamed through portals. It is, therefore, likely also created from natural light.
