Overview
Goo is usually present within testing chambers in order to provide a penalty for failure, and to ensure that test subjects are precise with their movements and positioning of their portals.

Objects that have fallen into the goo are irretrievable. In such cases where testing elements like the cubes are needed to solve a test, a replacement will be issued immediately if the first one was dropped into the goo. On some occasions during Portal 2, objects in the goo can be heard fizzling immediately after falling in.

Appearance-wise in Portal, the goo appears as a mixture of red, green, and brown-colored liquid with a swirled appearance. Any contact with the goo will result in continuous damage that would eventually result in killing Chell within a few seconds upon contact. As of Portal 2, the goo appears to be mainly brown, often with smoke swirling around its presence like in Portal.
Portal 2 is the sequel to the award winning and hugely successful Portal developed by Valve Corporation. It features a single-player story set after the events of Portals story; and a brand-new Co-op game mode, featuring additional test chambers designed specifically for Co-operative play. Portal 2 was released April 19, 2011 on the Steam platform. Retail release in North America started on April 19, 2011; and later, Europe and Australia on April 21, 2011.

Plot
Story

Development
Development on Portal 2 begins shortly after Portal was released. It originally was planned to not include any portals in the game, utilizing a new mechanic called "F-STOP". Portal 2 was also planned to be set in Aperture Science's earlier days, specifically during the 1950's era. When asked one of the members that worked on Portal 2 that the game wasn't going to include portals, and how would the game be a sequel to Portal, and more specifically, use the Portal title. He replied with, "We'll deal with it later.", hinting it was to focus on the game's mechanics first.

Portal 2 was also conceptualized as set after the events of Portal, and GLaDOS would test the new subject, named Mel, similarly to how it was with Chell. After playtesters were disappointed after GLaDOS didn't recognize the player as the one who killed her in the first game, Mel was rejected as a result.

Mel also appeared alongside Chell in the co-op mode of Portal 2 for a while before both being ultimately replaced by Atlas and P-body.

There was also going to be a fourth Gel planned for the game. Also inspired by "Tag: The Power of Paint", the fourth Gel was named Adhesion Gel. Bearing a purple texture, it originally allowed Chell to walk up walls. It was canceled due to playtesters became too disoriented and often had motion sickness while trying to pass a Test Chamber with Adhesion Gel. The coding (although it does not have any texture and bestows no effects on the surface it was painted on), is left in the game files.
The Perpetual Testing Initiative is a gamemode and campaign which introduces the concept of multiple alternate universes, simply shortened as "the multiverse". Set entirely on testing chambers created by the Portal 2 community on the Steam Workshop, the player once again has to fulfill the role of test subject - this time as silent stick figure Bendy.

The test chambers in the DLC are completely user-generated, using the simplistic in-game testing editor " Puzzle Creator", a much simplified version of Hammer.

It appears that Cave Johnson still lives in the multiverse and Bendy can hear Johnson talking to him from a microphone as he navigates the test chambers. Also, every Earth in the multiverse results with GLaDOS being abolished
The Weighted Companion Cube (often referred to as the Companion Cube) is a recurring object in the Portal universe. However, the Companion Cube can be seen prior to the end credits next to the Cake, suggesting that it survived.}}

The Companion Cube makes a prominent appearance in the Portal 2: Lab Rat comic, in which it speaks with protagonist Doug Rattmann. This appears to reference Portal, in which GLaDOS states that the Companion Cube cannot speak and, if it does, its advice should be .
The Cube also makes an appearance in the Co-op campaign but is inaccessible, preventing the player from interacting with it. After Chell leaves the facility upon completing Portal 2, a scorched Companion Cube is ejected after her. However, it also appears once in the single-player campaign as garbage. The entire name is given out of irony, however it still retains the coloring scheme and patterns present in the designs of the other cubes.

The Edgeless Safety Cube did have an appearance in a Portal Challenge Map, however it was unnamed and also did not have an accompanying receptacle, thus is not widely considered to have its first appearence until Portal 2.

Its main purpose is to redirect the Thermal Discouragement Beam to other places or through portals if necessary. However, the cube has a second use as a Weighted Storage Cube, as it can be used to activate the Heavy-Duty Super Button.Clr
The only way to scale the Cube is with the Razer Hydra Controllers, a feature supported by the Portal Gun in the DLC. The size of the Cube changes simultaneously with its mass. The Scalable Cube can be used to build bridges between gaps or to crush Turrets.
