{{Show achievement|Portal 2|Smash TV|Hard
|In these test chambers, Wheatley's TV monitors are able to be smashed in the following ways: (this must be done in one run.)

*'''Test Chamber 1''': Lift up a box using the funnel (make sure you are on the lower section) and, using its now gained height, fling it at Wheatley.
*'''Test Chamber 2''': Do basically the same thing from Test Chamber 1.
*'''Test Chamber 3''': The same as Test Chambers 1 and 2, but make sure you are in the first section of the chamber.
*'''Test Chamber 4''': Pick up the turret behind the button and aim it at Wheatley. It will not shoot until you let go, setting it upright.
*'''Test Chamber 5''': There are two monitors in this chamber. They both are smashed by lifting a box in a funnel and flinging it, but the exit portals are in two different locations. the first is on the wall in which the funnel is being projected on, around the center (This will take experimentation.) The second is on the very right of the angled surface that you go through on your way to the exit.
*'''Test Chamber 6''': Launch yourself on the Aerial Faith Plate.
*'''Test Chamber 11''': Burn him with the discouragement beam and the redirection cube. you will need to use the box to get the beam on a portal conductive surface, then use portals to get the beam to hit Wheatley.
*'''Test Chamber 12''': When you are in the place where you would normally use the box to open the door, burn the monitor.
*'''Test Chamber 15''': Do the same thing as Test Chambers 1, 2, and 3.
*'''Test Chamber 16''': (Tip: this is extremely hard to get in one try. Save at every point noted.) Do the test normally, however at the part where you coat turrets in goo (save before this) You must only coat '''two''' of the turrets, leaving one alive. (save now as well) Then, using one of the portal surfaces on each side of the turret platform, jump on the platform while pressing Ctrl (the crouch button) to avoid bouncing on gel. Grab the one remaining turret, and use it to shoot Wheatley and earn the achievement.
{{Show achievement|Portal 2|Portal Conservation Society|Hard
Move on the emitter so that you can see the white surface of the overhead panels, then fire a portal so that the Hard Light Bridge runs under the Vital Apparatus Vent. Press the button in the center of the wall by the Light Bridge and have your partner catch the ball that drops out of the vent. Place the ball on the receptacle and proceed into the next part of the chamber. Fire a portal at the receiving end of the Hard Light Bridge, then line up the second portal on the ceiling so that using the Aerial Faith Plate bounces you off the vertical light bridge and into the exit area.
'''Turrets''' serve as one of the main testing obstacles in the ''Portal'' series. Armed with unlimited ammunition and deadly accuracy, they will attempt to kill test subjects on sight.
=== Sentry Turret ===
[[File:Portal2 Turret Standard.png|right|100px|The Sentry Turret]]

'''Sentry Turrets''' are miniature tripod robots that appear in every game in the ''Portal'' series. They are seen as incapable of independent movement, but can open each side of their chassis (their 'arms') horizontally in order to reveal two gatling guns. The central part of the chassis holds their red eye, which emits a targeting laser. Almost all of the space within the Turret is devoted to storing the ridiculously stacked ammo, explaining the infinite supply of ammo when firing.

When test subjects are out of sight from the Turret's presence, they will maintain a standby state and will remain motionless with their guns retracted. Moving into their angle of sight however, will cause Turrets to deploy their guns shortly after greeting the unlucky individual before opening fire. They will continue to fire until the target is dead or moves out of sight. If the latter occurs, Turrets will briefly search for the test subject (as indicated by the movement of the targeting laser), after which they will revert to a standby state.

Turrets can be avoided, disabled or destroyed in a number of ways. The most common method is knocking them over, causing them to flail and fire wildly before deactivating. This can be done by picking them up and dropping them, or using any object to tip them over. Additionally, the [[Thermal Discouragement Beam|Discouragement Beams]]s or [[Material Emancipation Grill|Emancipation Grill]]s can be used to completely destroy them.

In ''[[Portal]]'', once a Turret has been knocked over and deactivated, restoring it to an upright position will reactivate it and the Turret will function normally once again. In ''[[Portal 2]]'' however, the Turret will remain permanently deactivated once it has been knocked over.
=== Rocket Turret ===
[[File:Portal Rocket Turret.png|left|80px|The Rocket Turret]]

The '''Rocket Turret''' is a unique enemy seen at the end of ''[[Portal]]''. It appears as a raw [[Cores|personality core]] outfitted with a rocket launcher. Upon activation, it will slowly lock onto [[Chell]] and emits a sound before firing a rocket. {{Spoiler|It plays a vital role in the battle with [[GLaDOS]], as rockets need to be sent through [[portals]] in order to hit her, causing [[Cores#Personality Cores|personality cores]] to detach from her.}}

Rockets can also be redirected by Chell to shatter the observation windows throughout the offices of the Enrichment Center.
{{main|Defective Turret}}

'''Defective Turrets''', referred to as "Crap Turrets" by [[Wheatley]], are incomplete, sometimes ammo-less versions of the Sentry Turrets introduced in ''[[Portal 2]]''. Unlike normal Sentry Turrets, Defective Turrets have a more humorous and sarcastic dialogue, and speak in a masculine, less robotic voice.

They are harmless to [[Chell]], many times making comments such as "If anyone asks, I killed you". Their voice lines seem to imply they are blind, but they are still aware of Chell's presence. {{spoiler|They are first encountered in the chapter, ''The Escape''.}}

In the game's [[co-op]] campaign, the Defective Turrets appear as obstacles for [[Atlas]] and [[P-body]] throughout the ''Mobility Gels'' testing course. These Turrets appear to be as fully functional as regular Sentry Turrets and possesses the innocent and feminine voice tones as they should. The only difference from regular Turrets is that they have been defaced. {{spoiler|One Defective Turret in the final test chamber of this test course has been evidently reconfigured by someone, as instead of serving as a typical testing obstacle, before dying it reveals that it "needs to protect the humans".}}

{{spoiler|Frankenturrets do not speak, and instead emit incomprehensible chirping sounds. They generally serve as Wheatley's replacement for Storage Cubes once [[Chell]] is available as his test subject. Their only difference from normal cubes being that Frankenturrets will hop around aimlessly when it is not placed on a [[Heavy Duty Super-Colliding Super Button|button]]. When picked up by Chell, they retract their legs inside the cube. If they fall over on their sides or upside down, they will wave their legs trying to get up.}}
=== Animal King Turret ===
[[File:Animal king.jpg|left|150px|The Animal King Turret]]
The '''Animal King Turret''' is a unique type in the single-player campaign of ''Portal 2'' that is only used in an [[Aperture Science]] slideshow to represent an "Animal King Takeover" in the chapter, ''The Courtesy Call''. The Turret is considerably colossal in comparison to its Sentry Turret brethren, and appears to operate the 'arms' on its side in exactly the same way.

It can be distinguished from ordinary Turrets by its immense size, crown and leopard skin-detailed chassis. In the context of the slideshow, the Animal King Turret is used as an example of an entity or a form of organization capable of taking control of Earth which "[[Media:Announcer prehub46.wav|...refuses to, or is incapable of listening to reason]]".

{{spoiler|The Animal King Turret appears only once in the entire game, during the single-player ending sequence when [[Chell]] is being brought up to the surface by GLaDOS after defeating Wheatley.}}
=== Hover Turret ===

The '''Hover Turret''' is an unused Turret found within the game files of ''Portal 2''. It emits a laser, similar to the other types of Turrets, that is coloured light-blue and able to burn the player similar to the burn of the [[Thermal Discouragement Beam]], however unlike the Thermal Discouragement Beam it's laser does not provide a barrier for the player's movement, nor does it interact with game mechanics. The Hover Turret can be spawned within ''Portal 2'' via the cheat command <code>ent_create npc_hover_turret</code>.
'''Turrets''' serve as one of the main testing obstacles in the ''Portal'' series. Armed with unlimited ammunition and deadly accuracy, they will attempt to kill test subjects on sight.

=== Rocket Turret ===

The '''Rocket Turret''' is a unique enemy seen at the end of ''[[Portal]]''. It appears as a raw [[Cores|personality core]] outfitted with a rocket launcher. Upon activation, it will slowly lock onto [[Chell]] and emits a sound before firing a rocket. {{Spoiler|It plays a vital role in the battle with [[GLaDOS]], as rockets need to be sent through [[portals]] in order to hit her, causing [[Cores#Personality Cores|personality cores]] to detach from her.}}

Rockets can also be redirected by Chell to shatter the observation windows throughout the offices of the Enrichment Center.
{{main|Defective Turret}}
[[File:Portal2 Turret Defective.png|right|100px|The Defective Turret]]

'''Defective Turrets''', referred to as "Crap Turrets" by [[Wheatley]], are incomplete, sometimes ammo-less versions of the Sentry Turrets introduced in ''[[Portal 2]]''. Unlike normal Sentry Turrets, Defective Turrets have a more humorous and sarcastic dialogue, and speak in a masculine, less robotic voice.

They are harmless to [[Chell]], many times making comments such as "If anyone asks, I killed you". Their voice lines seem to imply they are blind, but they are still aware of Chell's presence. {{spoiler|They are first encountered in the chapter, ''The Escape''.}}

In the game's [[co-op]] campaign, the Defective Turrets appear as obstacles for [[Atlas]] and [[P-body]] throughout the ''Mobility Gels'' testing course. These Turrets appear to be as fully functional as regular Sentry Turrets and possesses the innocent and feminine voice tones as they should. The only difference from regular Turrets is that they have been defaced. {{spoiler|One Defective Turret in the final test chamber of this test course has been evidently reconfigured by someone, as instead of serving as a typical testing obstacle, before dying it reveals that it "needs to protect the humans".}}

{{spoiler|Frankenturrets do not speak, and instead emit incomprehensible chirping sounds. They generally serve as Wheatley's replacement for Storage Cubes once [[Chell]] is available as his test subject. Their only difference from normal cubes being that Frankenturrets will hop around aimlessly when it is not placed on a [[Heavy Duty Super-Colliding Super Button|button]]. When picked up by Chell, they retract their legs inside the cube. If they fall over on their sides or upside down, they will wave their legs trying to get up.}}
Apart from the ending, a Prima Donna Turret can also be found in the chapter ''The Return'', at the end of Test Chamber 11; briefly seen in an elevator just as [[Chell]] enters the [[Chamberlock]]. It can also be found below the [[Doug Rattmann|Rattmann]]'s den in the same chapter during Test Chamber 16, where it is observing a turret quartet.}}
=== Animal King Turret ===

{{spoiler|The Animal King Turret appears only once in the entire game, during the single-player ending sequence when [[Chell]] is being brought up to the surface by GLaDOS after defeating Wheatley.}}
=== Hover Turret ===
[[File:Portal 2 Hover Turret.png|right|100px|The Hover Turret in-game]]

The '''Hover Turret''' is an unused Turret found within the game files of ''Portal 2''. It emits a laser, similar to the other types of Turrets, that is coloured light-blue and able to burn the player similar to the burn of the [[Thermal Discouragement Beam]], however unlike the Thermal Discouragement Beam it's laser does not provide a barrier for the player's movement, nor does it interact with game mechanics. The Hover Turret can be spawned within ''Portal 2'' via the cheat command <code>ent_create npc_hover_turret</code>.
Throughout the ''Portal'' series, you take on the role of [[Chell]], a young woman trapped within the [[Aperture Science]] complex. Chell is forced to solve tests of varying difficulty in specially designed [[Test Chamber|chambers]] by the artificial intelligence-gone-rogue named [[GLaDOS]]. Throughout these tests, Chell is granted access to the [[Handheld Portal Device]], a piece of equipment developed by Aperture Science that allows Chell to create holes, called [[portals]], large enough to travel through. The game begins with Chell awakening in a [[Relaxation Vault]], where she is briefed by the voice of [[GLaDOS]] coming from speakers, before being released through a portal. The player is introduced to the testing process and mechanics, shortly thereafter obtaining the [[Handheld Portal Gun]]. As Chell makes her way through test chambers it becomes clear {{Spoiler|the facility is devoid of human life and GLaDOS is testing Chell for her own warped definition of 'science'. Eventually Chell reaches GLaDOS' lair, where she finally comes face to face with the rogue AI. It is revealed that GLaDOS had murdered everyone in the facility using deadly [[neurotoxin]]s. GLaDOS now attempts to do the same to Chell. Using the Handheld Portal Device, Chell defeats GLaDOS by removing her AI cores and depositing them in a nearby [[Emergency Intelligence Incinerator]], resulting in a large explosion that blows a hole in the roof dragging both Chell and GLaDOS upwards. Her room is in a state of disrepair, and soon, an unfamiliar voice greets her. Upon opening the door she finds herself face to face with a [[Personality Core]] who introduces himself as [[Wheatley]], the jovial AI in charge of the test subjects storage facility. After bringing Chell up to date, Wheatley moves her relaxation chamber through the storage facility, crashing several times and almost destroying the room. After successfully navigating the room to the main facility, Wheatley instructs Chell to go retrieve the [[Handheld Portal Device]], as it will be needed for their escape from the facility. Upon successfully acquiring the device, Wheatley and Chell make their way to GLaDOS' chamber where Wheatley claims a lift to the surface is located. They find the chamber partially destroyed, with overgrown wildlife everywhere, and in the middle of the chamber lies the lifeless body of GLaDOS. Navigating to the breaker room under the chamber, Wheatley attempts to find the breaker for the lift. In the process, he inadvertently reboots GLaDOS. Bitter at the cause of her death, she crushes Wheatley and tosses him away before dropping Chell into the [[Emergency Intelligence Incinerator]], into the incinerator room. GLaDOS instructs Chell to retrieve the dual-portal Handheld Portal Device, before guiding her back into the facility's test chambers. They successfully carry out their plan by replacing the master Turret template with a [[Defective Turrets|Defective Turret]] and use [[portals]] to redirect a [[Thermal Discouragement Beam]] to cut off the neurotoxin supply lines. Hopeful, they make their way to GLaDOS' chamber once again for a showdown. GLaDOS, once again, attempts to kill Chell but is unsuccessful due to Wheatley's and Chell's sabotage. It is at this point that the [[Announcer]] informs them that the central core, GLaDOS, is 80% corrupt and because Wheatley is present, a core transfer is initialized. This requires both cores' approval, and when GLaDOS objects, a stalemate is reached. In jubilant mood, Wheatley sends Chell on her way to the surface before having a change of heart as he revels in his new found position of power. The speaker introduces himself as [[Cave Johnson]], founder and CEO of Aperture, and introduces his secretary, [[Caroline]]. As Chell makes her way through the old facility via testing spheres, Cave Johnson guides the player through the tests while gradually revealing the history behind Aperture. It is discovered that Cave Johnson founded the company in the 1950's as a curtains manufacturer, becoming a self-made billionaire, before expanding into a science research company. He built the facility in large salt mines beneath {{W|Michigan}} with the intention of competing with [[Black Mesa]]. Inbetween lawsuits against his company for various mishaps and his personal rivalry with Black Mesa, who he claims stole much of his company's research, Cave Johnson slowly runs the company into the ground. It is revealed that in a misguided move in the 1980's, he bought $70 million worth of Moon rocks to grind up. The resulting [[gel]] was toxic, and Cave Johnson falls gravely ill. Chell is reunited with the potato GLaDOS, found in a bird's nest, and GLaDOS insists they need to stop the corrupted Wheatley before his actions cause the destruction of the facility.}}
She then finds herself unwittingly parroting a conversation between Caroline and Cave Johnson. Highly stressed, she manages to overload her battery and shuts off temporarily. Cave Johnson's voice on the recordings now sounds frail and it is clear his health is quickly deteriorating. In a last ditch attempt to survive, he instructs his engineers to start research into artificial intelligence, so that his mind can be transferred into a computer. Angry at the state of affairs, he instructs his employees that if he dies before the AI is complete, Caroline is to take charge of the facility, against her wishes. He also informs them that she can take his place in the AI. No more recordings are made, but it becomes clear that Caroline's mind was inserted into the AI, and is now a part of GLaDOS. Learning this, GLaDOS' attitude slowly changes. She begins praising Chell's progress, and claims to have turned a new leaf. Having Chell and GLaDOS back in his clutches, Wheatley forces them to carry out his tests, revealing the need to test is an 'itch' hardwired into the AI system. Initially Wheatley is satisfied with the testing but soon the euphoria of watching Chell and GLaDOS being tested wears off, as he builds up a resistance to the euphoric response. Growing frustrated with them, Wheatley hints he has found other test subjects ([[P-body]] and [[Atlas]]) and that he has a 'surprise to die for' coming soon. He unleashes his surprise early when Chell steps on a booby trapped [[Aerial Faith Plate]], which transports Chell and GLaDOS to a platform surrounded by spiked crushing plates.}}

==== {{anchor|Chapter 9}} Chapter 9: The Part Where He Kills You ====
{{Spoiler|Escaping the trap, Chell and GLaDOS make their escape through the inner facility, avoiding Wheatley's attempts to kill them. They come across a room containing rejected corrupted cores and GLaDOS formulates a plan. She stays behind to carry it out while Chell makes her way to Wheatley's lair for the final confrontation, where he reveals the facility will self destruct in six minutes. They do battle and during its course, Chell manages to attach 3 corrupted cores onto Wheatley. This results in a core corruption of 100% and the Announcer intervenes to initiate a core transfer. GLaDOS inserts herself as the substitute core and hurries Chell to press the stalemate resolution button. Wheatley, anticipating this outcome, has booby trapped the button and it explodes as Chell attempts to press it. She survives the explosion, to the disdain of Wheatley. With the last of her strength, she grabs the Handheld Portal Device and shoots a portal at the Moon's surface. The resulting portals cause everything in the room to be sucked into the vacuum of space, but Chell manages to hang on by grabbing hold of the panicking Wheatley. GLaDOS uses a mechanical arm to detach Wheatley from his body, who is then sucked into space, and pulls Chell back through before closing the portal. Chell wakes up later to find a worried [[P-body]] and [[Atlas]] watching over her and GLaDOS back in her body and back in charge of the facility. She thanks Chell for helping her find the Caroline inside her, before promptly deleting all traces of her. She reveals she has become weary of trying to kill Chell, and that the best course of solution is to give Chell what she wants. Her freedom. She sends Chell on her way to the surface, where along the way she is serenaded by a Turret opera. Reaching the top a door opens, and Chell steps out into a picturesque sunny cornfield where the door promptly shuts behind her. Taking in her freedom, GLaDOS has one last surprise. GLaDOS desperately attempts to block Chell from doing so, but is unsuccessful, and the core transfer occurs. Wheatley is transferred into GLaDOS' body and she is removed from power. In jubilant mood, Wheatley sends Chell on her way to the surface before having a change of heart as he revels in his new found position of power. GLaDOS taunts him and in a fit of rage he takes her core apart and places her in a potato battery. It is at this point GLaDOS reveals that Wheatley was designed to be a moron, in order to dampen GLaDOS' brainpower so that she wouldn't attempt to murder everyone in the facility. Angered by this revelation, Wheatley throws her in the lift with Chell and in a fit of rage smashes the lift downwards, where they fall deep into the depths of the facility.}}

==== {{anchor|Chapter 6}} Chapter 6: The Fall ====
{{Spoiler|Falling several miles down, Chell awakens to find herself in the very bowels of Aperture and the ruins of the old facility, before witnessing the potato GLaDOS being abducted by a bird. Chell makes her way through the ruins and enters through a closed off area to find the old Aperture Science facility. A voice recording plays, welcoming the visitor to Aperture. The speaker introduces himself as [[Cave Johnson]], founder and CEO of Aperture, and introduces his secretary, [[Caroline]]. As Chell makes her way through the old facility via testing spheres, Cave Johnson guides the player through the tests while gradually revealing the history behind Aperture. It is discovered that Cave Johnson founded the company in the 1950's as a curtains manufacturer, becoming a self-made billionaire, before expanding into a science research company. He built the facility in large salt mines beneath {{W|Michigan}} with the intention of competing with [[Black Mesa]]. Inbetween lawsuits against his company for various mishaps and his personal rivalry with Black Mesa, who he claims stole much of his company's research, Cave Johnson slowly runs the company into the ground. It is revealed that in a misguided move in the 1980's, he bought $70 million worth of Moon rocks to grind up. The resulting [[gel]] was toxic, and Cave Johnson falls gravely ill. Chell is reunited with the potato GLaDOS, found in a bird's nest, and GLaDOS insists they need to stop the corrupted Wheatley before his actions cause the destruction of the facility.}}

==== {{anchor|Chapter 7}} Chapter 7: The Reunion ====
{{Spoiler|While travelling with Chell, GLaDOS comes across a portrait of Cave Johnson and Caroline, whom she finds vaguely familiar. She then finds herself unwittingly parroting a conversation between Caroline and Cave Johnson. Highly stressed, she manages to overload her battery and shuts off temporarily. Cave Johnson's voice on the recordings now sounds frail and it is clear his health is quickly deteriorating. In a last ditch attempt to survive, he instructs his engineers to start research into artificial intelligence, so that his mind can be transferred into a computer. Angry at the state of affairs, he instructs his employees that if he dies before the AI is complete, Caroline is to take charge of the facility, against her wishes. He also informs them that she can take his place in the AI. No more recordings are made, but it becomes clear that Caroline's mind was inserted into the AI, and is now a part of GLaDOS. Learning this, GLaDOS' attitude slowly changes. She begins praising Chell's progress, and claims to have turned a new leaf. While making their way back up to the facility, and Wheatley, GLaDOS observes a poster about robot paradoxes and comes up with a plan to stop Wheatley when they face him.}}

==== {{anchor|Chapter 8}} Chapter 8: The Itch ====
{{Spoiler|Chell and GLaDOS return to find the facility in chaos. Several core meltdowns are in progress while Wheatley has been busy modifying the test chambers to his liking, including constructing [[Frankenturrets]] - crudely made walking Turret/Weighted Storage Cube hybrids. They confront Wheatley and GLaDOS attempts to shut him down by presenting him with a {{W|logical paradox}}. It fails as he nonchalantly provides a false answer, apparently immune to its effect. Having Chell and GLaDOS back in his clutches, Wheatley forces them to carry out his tests, revealing the need to test is an 'itch' hardwired into the AI system. Initially Wheatley is satisfied with the testing but soon the euphoria of watching Chell and GLaDOS being tested wears off, as he builds up a resistance to the euphoric response. Growing frustrated with them, Wheatley hints he has found other test subjects ([[P-body]] and [[Atlas]]) and that he has a 'surprise to die for' coming soon. He unleashes his surprise early when Chell steps on a booby trapped [[Aerial Faith Plate]], which transports Chell and GLaDOS to a platform surrounded by spiked crushing plates.}}

==== {{anchor|Chapter 9}} Chapter 9: The Part Where He Kills You ====
{{Spoiler|Escaping the trap, Chell and GLaDOS make their escape through the inner facility, avoiding Wheatley's attempts to kill them. They come across a room containing rejected corrupted cores and GLaDOS formulates a plan. She stays behind to carry it out while Chell makes her way to Wheatley's lair for the final confrontation, where he reveals the facility will self destruct in six minutes. They do battle and during its course, Chell manages to attach 3 corrupted cores onto Wheatley. This results in a core corruption of 100% and the Announcer intervenes to initiate a core transfer. GLaDOS inserts herself as the substitute core and hurries Chell to press the stalemate resolution button. Wheatley, anticipating this outcome, has booby trapped the button and it explodes as Chell attempts to press it. She survives the explosion, to the disdain of Wheatley. With the last of her strength, she grabs the Handheld Portal Device and shoots a portal at the Moon's surface. The resulting portals cause everything in the room to be sucked into the vacuum of space, but Chell manages to hang on by grabbing hold of the panicking Wheatley. GLaDOS uses a mechanical arm to detach Wheatley from his body, who is then sucked into space, and pulls Chell back through before closing the portal. Chell wakes up later to find a worried [[P-body]] and [[Atlas]] watching over her and GLaDOS back in her body and back in charge of the facility. She thanks Chell for helping her find the Caroline inside her, before promptly deleting all traces of her. She reveals she has become weary of trying to kill Chell, and that the best course of solution is to give Chell what she wants. Her freedom. She sends Chell on her way to the surface, where along the way she is serenaded by a Turret opera. Reaching the top a door opens, and Chell steps out into a picturesque sunny cornfield where the door promptly shuts behind her. Taking in her freedom, GLaDOS has one last surprise. The Weighted Companion Cube she incinerated in ''Portal'' is thrown outside with her and the door down to the facility is closed shut.}}
== Trivia ==
* In order to flesh out the story in Portal 2, Valve originally intended to include an exhibition within the Aperture Science facility, one composed of different [[Concept art#Dioramas|dioramas]] showcasing various aspects of the company and its philosophy. The dioramas were ultimately cut before the final release.
== Thoughts ==
As I played through Portal and Portal 2, I developed a theory. Cave Johnson said that if he didn't survive until the "brain uploader" project was finished, that he wanted Caroline to use it and if she didn't agree then to have her put into it by force. If she actually is the true personna of GlaDOS, then maybe that's why GlaDOS wanted to kill everyone once she was turned on, maybe out of revenge as they put her into the computer when she didn't want to. Just a theory, could we put this into the article? [[User:Sonic Nova|Sonic Nova]] 21:49, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

: Dev's once said that they added a twist about Caroline is GlaDOS at later stages of Portal 2 development. Also, GlaDOS don't remeber anything from her origins in first place and after realising who she was she become actually more friendly to Chell. I think her agresiveness is just a popular belief that rougue AI want to just kill humans as possible threat: HAL-900 from Space Oddisey, Mass Effect series, Terminator series, X-files episode and etc. --[[User:Comrade Suhov|Comrade Suhov]] 11:03, 29 July 2011 (UTC)
:There are very high video-quality requirements for walkthroughs so not everyone can render them quite properly. In fact, since Portal and Portal 2 are relatively small games, I was hoping to do both, and yes, Portal as well. I just did Portal 2 first because more people are interested in a Portal 2 walkthrough than a Portal 1 right now, but once that is done I'll get on Portal 1.
How can I make walkthrough videos for Portal Test Chambers in Russian language?
[[User:Alexander|Alexander]] 19:41, 29 July 2011 (UTC)
:If you mean Portal 1, then hold on, let them be created in English first. The Portal 2 videos, however, are almost done in English, so I'd start there.
:Now, there's a few ways to go about this:
* Either the walkthrough is a different version of the English one, with a Russian translators playing through the game and recording videos, same way as the English one
* Either the walkthrough uses the same demos as the English one. Then, I think that the voice files will be replaced by the Russian ones. This means that the video will be exactly the same, but with Russian voices. This will be consistent and be fully translated, but it comes with the limitations of having to use Source Recorder (which is hard for some parts of the game)
* Either the English walkthrough videos are subtitled in Russian. I am currently working on a way to do that automatically, using the game's Russian subtitles files. This way, it will be very easy to have a Russian walkthrough, and the voice will be in English with Russian subtitles. This method can also be used for other languages.
So, what do you prefer? — [[User:WindPower|Wind]] 20:12, 29 July 2011 (UTC)
:I think the first way is better than other two. So video will be more like the game. The second way is rather hard. And voice lines may be replaced incorrectly. What about the third way? Hearing voice is certainly better than reading subtitles. But there's a very small disadvantage using the first or the second way. The voice that sounds in Russain language differs from original one. And some voice effects (changing voice, garbles) aren't shown.
:[[User:Alexander|Alexander]] 21:04, 29 July 2011 (UTC)
::The thing with the first way is that it's the longest and hardest one, because it involves re-doing everything that was done for the English part of the wiki. You're free to do it if you want to, but I'd suggest gathering other people to help you along, because it is a very long task (took me months).
::In the meantime, I've been working on a subtitling tool (you can see it [http://theportalwiki.com/subtitle/ here]) which will allow us to make captions for sections of the video, associate them with a sound file, and from that map it to other languages. So what can be done is to use the third way (english with russian subtitles), then as the real Russian walkthrough progresses, replace videos with it. Does that sound like a good plan? — [[User:WindPower|Wind]] 23:58, 29 July 2011 (UTC)
:::Yes? It's good idea. I've recorded a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDayHXyy9xc . Is it good walkthrough video? [[User:Alexander|Alexander]] 21:17, 30 July 2011 (UTC)
::::Keep in mind that someone who needs a walkthrough of Portal 1 more than 4 years after its release is likely to be a person very new to video games. Because of that, it is important to make the walkthrough easy to understand and follow; that is why, on the Portal 2 walkthrough, all the camera movements are very slow (it makes it easier to follow). To an experienced gamer, this style of movement does look slow, but that's okay. So, in other words: Move the mouse slowly.
::::Another thing is pacing: it is important to move kind of slowly and give an overview of each room you enter. This is for several reasons:
::::* It will be easier for someone to know which room you are in (since you look around the room)
::::* It will be easier to follow
::::* YouTube's thumbnails for a video are a choice between the image at 25% of the video, 50% of the video, or 75% of the video. If you take looks around the room as yu enter them, there is a higher chance that one of youtube's video thumbnails will be one of those moments, which will make a nice video thumbnail (Just a little bonus, hehe)
::::* For test chambers, make sure you stare at the information panel (where it says the test chamber number) for at least 3 seconds
::::Last but not least is graphics quality. First, make sure to record videos with a resolution of ratio 16:9 (1280x720 preferably, or 1920x1080 if you can). This will make sure that the video occupies the entire video player, instead of having those black bars on the left and the right like this video has. Also, you can try to record at a higher graphics quality if you can, so that it looks better. If you can't, that's okay, but most importantly make sure it still looks smooth.
::::Thanks, and good luck :3 — [[User:WindPower|Wind]] 21:36, 30 July 2011 (UTC)
:::::Thank you for your comments. I'll try to do better.
:::::P.S. Uploading videos takes very much time. For exsample, this video (two minutes) was uploaded in two with a half hours.
:::::[[User:Alexander|Alexander]] 22:06, 30 July 2011 (UTC)
::::::Yes indeed~ It takes me from 4 to 14 hours to upload a walkthrough video, depending on the length of the video D: Slow connection + big files = long time. Don't worry about it though, take your time. No rush~ — [[User:WindPower|Wind]] 22:07, 30 July 2011 (UTC)
:::::I can't turn on 1280x720 resolution in the game. If 16:9 ratio resolution is needed I can enable only 856x480 or 848x480. Should I use again 1024x768 HD resolution or choose 856(or 848)x480 one? — [[User:Alexander|Alexander]] 22:40, 30 July 2011 (UTC)
::::::That's a shame :( I guess your monitor doesn't go to 1280x720. Do you know anyone who has such a monitor, or do you have another monitor that you could plug into your computer for that? If not, then I guess 1024x768 would be the best choice, but not very good still >: — [[User:WindPower|Wind]] 22:42, 30 July 2011 (UTC)
:::::No, I don't know anyone who can help me. Then I'll make not very good video. I hope less people will detect black bars. Also there is no black bar in fullscreen mode if watching people have NOT WIDESCREEN monitor. — [[User:Alexander|Alexander]] 00:10, 31 July 2011 (UTC)
The players take the form of either [[Atlas]], the short and blue bot, or [[P-body]], the tall and orange bot. Each bot comes equipped with their own Handheld Portal Device with separate portal colors. The portals are capable of maintaining the flow of things, even if it enters a partner's portal, which is essential during some test chambers.

There are five test courses, each with several testing chambers within, which will test both players' ability to solve the different puzzles as they progress. Each chamber becomes much harder than the last, with the final test taking place outside of the official Aperture testing facilities. In these tests, the players are then put to the test, so to speak, and must use every bit of knowledge earned about the previous tests in the final one. The last chambers of each course, excluding the fifth, the players are told to go out and locate a certain disk for the DVD player found at the end of the course. Once found and inserted within the device, the players are given a few lines from [[GLaDOS]] before exploding violently. This is the only means of getting out of the test chamber. Upon completion, players are then returned to the [[Hub]].

During the testing, GLaDOS will periodically chime in and say a few choice words, either to bemoan the players' progress or point out their tiny flaws. She even goes beyond to try and break their partnership by pointing fingers at one or the other. If the player stands within range of one of GLaDOS' monitoring cameras and perform a gesture, it will elicit a response from GLaDOS, depending on the gesture performed. Players do not have to fear death while testing, as it's commonplace in the machine world. If a player dies, the other player will be given an indication that the other has died and where they died. The dead player will then respawn moments later from the chute the Reassembly Machine sends them through, ready for a second try. The players have an infinite amount of lives, and GLaDOS will comment on every death that occurs with dry humor or irritability. As players progress, they will cross checkpoints that lead into the next part of the test chamber. The checkpoints will allow players who die to respawn at the checkpoint for shorter travel time to the next testing chamber.

==Courses==
====Course One: Team Building====
{{spoiler|This is one of the first courses available to the player upon entering the Hub, the others remaining locked until the other courses are completed. In this course, the players are given basic tests that emphasize the use of teamwork through portals and ''pinging'', which is a function that allows players to communicate even without text or even through voice. Pings come in a variety of forms, from a simple "Look" ping, to a "Timer" ping that can be used to coordinate timed events effectively.}}

====Course Two: Mass and Velocity====
{{spoiler|After completing Course One, this course will unlock for players to continue testing. This chamber utilizes the effects portals have when an object has both mass and velocity as it enters the portal, meaning the players must utilize both in order to pass this course.}}

====Course Three: Hard-Light Surfaces====
{{spoiler|This course opens up upon completion of Course Two. In this course, the players must make use of the Light Bridges to both navigate chambers and act as a wall for other chambers as a defense mechanism or a creative way of stopping something from hurtling into a water hazard.}}

====Course Four: Excursion Funnels====
{{spoiler|This course unlocks upon completion of Course Three. During this course, the player will have to make use of both Light Bridges and Excursion Funnels in order to complete these chambers. It will employ elements from the previous courses as well, making it much more difficult as the players progress.}}

====Course Five: Mobility Gels====
{{spoiler|This is the final course that unlocks after the completion of Course Four. Upon entering, GLaDOS will chime in the explain the purpose of the testing and what their true purpose is. The players are then dropped into the defunct Aperture testing spheres encountered during single player, and must make use of all elements from the previous chambers along with the Gels that are found in the course. The final course is very difficult, requiring both players to act as a true team. The last chamber is halted by a large vault door, which holds the frozen humans inside. Both players must perform any gesture to ultimately unlock the door.}}

==Additional Courses==
====Art Therapy====
Set after the conclusion of the Mobility Gels course, GLaDOS has reassembled the bots for testing again and claims that it has been millions of years since they were last reassembled. {{spoiler|As the testing progresses, the bots are able to observe the defunct surroundings of the Enrichment Center, which GLaDOS assures them as part of an "art exhibit". Further on in the course, players will be sent to a Robot Assembly Annex station to repair their own reassembly machines as GLaDOS finally makes it clear that it has only been a week since the Mobility Gels course and that she needs their help in restoring her control over the facility as something is overriding her controls. At the end of the course, both players are sent out of the testing area to resolve the problem in a control room housing a prototype chassis of the [[Cores#Central Core|central core]].}}

Interestingly, the sixth course was initially going to consist of advanced test chambers during ''Portal 2''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s development, months before the game was released. However, this was scrapped and was removed from the final game. The [[Peer Review]] DLC to ''Portal 2'' instead adds only challenge modes to single-player and co-op, with no sign of advanced test chambers. The Art Therapy course is referred to as an additional course instead of the "sixth course".
[[File:Pneumatic Diversity Vent.jpg|right|300px|thumb|The Pneumatic Diversity Vent component in ''Portal 2''.]]

The '''[[Aperture Science]] Pneumatic Diversity Vent''' is the primary component of the [[tubes]] in the ''Portal'' series. Although the component itself was not present in the first ''[[Portal]]'', this component is the only means of supplying pneumatic pressures to push products throughout the Aperture Science computer-aided Enrichment Center, and opposite to the [[Vital Apparatus Vent]].

As the second part of its name suggests, the Pneumatic Diversity Vent's purpose is also to redirect various products to a different location of the Enrichment Center if it were needed there.

== Functionality ==
The pneumatic pressures providing the suctions in the [[tubes]] have existed since ''Portal'', and has remained prevalent throughout ''[[Portal 2]]''. The Pneumatic Diversity Vents are the source of the powerful vacuums in tubes, and will therefore suck up any object(s) near it to provide continuous transportation if other Pneumatic Diversity Vent components are nearby. It is never demonstrated just how powerful the suction truly is in ''Portal 2'', however in an early E3 2010 footage when the components were a [[Mechanics|testing mechanic]], these components were originally able to remove various [[panels]] from their positions.

These components have transported a wide range of Aperture products such as [[Cubes]] (including Weighted Cubes and Edgeless Cubes), [[Turrets]], elevators from a [[Chamberlock]]-specific Tube network (straight direction Tubes only), and other such objects to various locations they are needed.

There have been cases where [[Chell]] would board a tube to be transported with the help of the pneumatic pressures. In ''Portal'', after [[Chell]] had escaped from her testing tracks, she boards a damaged tube, but is unexpectedly pulled back into a [[Test Chamber]] by [[GLaDOS]]. {{spoiler|In ''Portal 2'', she had used it again in a [[Portal 2 Chapter 5 Tube Ride|Tube riding]] scene from the chapter ''The Escape'', in which both Chell and [[Wheatley]] had been sucked up through the Transportation Tubes via pneumatic pulls and were rapidly traveling around the facility. Although this was not a part of Wheatley's plans to confront [[GLaDOS]], he realized that the pneumatic pulls have a chance of bringing them to [[Portal 2 Chapter 5 GLaDOS' Lair|her chamber]].}}

As part of the Peer Review DLC for ''Portal 2'', the Pneumatic Diversity Vents also serves as an entrance to the extra courses found in the [[Hub]].

GLaDOS appears to be the only source of operating the pneumatic pulls in the tubes. This is proven in ''Portal'' after Chell boards into the tubes; the cubes are directed elsewhere, yet Chell was brought another direction. Her power over these Vents are also demonstrated in ''Portal 2'', near a [[Portal 2 Chapter 1 Test Chambers 7 & 8|catwalk scene]] where the [[Oracle Turret]] can be found; unveiling entire tubes to have been completely non-functional after the destruction of GLaDOS.
