Aperture Tag: The Paint Gun Testing Initiative is a Portal 2 modification featuring gameplay focussing around the use and manipulation of the Gels featured in Portal 2.

Story
The events take place after the events of Portal 2's cooperative campaign's Mobility Gels course, and before the events of the Art Therapy course, in the Aperture Science Facility, while GLaDOS had finished building the Aperture Science Paint Gun. A test subject wakes up in an Aperture Science Extended Relaxation Center's restroom ready to begin his test. He is introduced to Nigel, a personality core and his test associate. He then is put through a series of tests featuring the Aperture Science Paint Gun, Aperture Science's final product. When the testing is over, Nigel was surprised that there was someone to complete every single test chamber and thinks that he is the proper one to deactivate the old Aperture Science Stability Stable Energy Reactor, the energy supply of Aperture Science, as a new one was built. Nigel is really surprised that he made it through so easily and decides to put him through another round of tests.

Mechanics
Mechanics
Expandlist
* Aperture Science Paint Gun
: Allows the player to coat a surface with a never-ending supply of either Repulsion Gel or Propulsion Gel, and allows the player to pick up objects in a similar fashion to the Portal gun.
* Aperture Science Paint Gun Activation Field
: Has two sides: The green one activates the Paint Gun so that it can shoot gel, and the purple one deactivates it.
* Aperture Science Vacuum Delivery System
: As a substitute to Portal's Chamberlocks, the Vacuum pipes are used for transportation between test chambers.
* Glass
: Much like non-portable surfaces, you can't put Gels on glass.

Characters
Nigel
Nigel is the Core that helps you in Aperture Tag.He looks like the cores from Portal 2 but is a reskin of the cores (also from Portal 2), with an Orange eye instead of Pink.

The Heavy Metal Core
An easter egg found in a test chamber, the Heavy Metal Core sits in his chair and listens to a heavy metal version of Still Alive and bounces his eye container plate up and down. His eye is alternating red and white bands.
This Test Chamber is the eighteenth level of the game, and introduces the player to the Weighted Companion Cube. The Chamber also features multiple High Energy Pellets.
Hazards
* High Energy Pellets
* Cube Hazard

Walkthrough
{{Spoiler|block=yes|
*Go to the end of the hallway.
*Pick up your Companion Cube and place it in front of the small ledge. Jump on the cube and then jump on the ledge.
*Pick up the cube and repeat. Take the cube and use it as a shield from the Pellet.
*Upon reaching the other side of the hallway, look out for the bouncing Pellet. Wait for the pellet to disappear.
*Go in front of the second hallway. Wait for the pellet in that hallway to go away from you.
*Run to the other side while using the cube as a shield. Then turn to the left and go through the door.
*Drop down from the ledge and go through the doorway facing the three lifts.
*Use the cube to bounce the Pellet into the catcher.
*Go back and leave the cube on the floor. Fire a portal on the wall above the ledge.
*Turn to face the catcher. Place a portal on the angled wallpanels.
*Put the other portal on the wall where the Pellet is bouncing off. Wait for the pellet to get into the catcher.
*Drop down from the ledge and pick up the cube.
*Go in the room with the button. Turn left and place the cube on the button on the ledge opening the second door.
*Head back out of the dark room and place a portal on the wall facing the doors and buttons.
*With the other portal on the ledge, go through the portal. Go to the other end of the hallway again.
*Shoot the portal on the wall where the last pellet is bouncing off and go back to stand next to the button in the dark room (avoid the Pellet).
*Wait for the Pellet to go past you and the button towards the door. When it does, go stand on the button and the Pellet should hit the catcher.
*Take the Companion cube out of the room and then place a portal above the ledge. Go through the portal with the cube.
*Jump on lift with the cube. Continue by jumping on the two other ones. Then turn right and jump down to the lower ledge.
*Go along the hallway. Put the cube on the button and go through the door.
*Push the switch and get the Companion cube from the button.
*Euthanize the Companion Cube by dropping it down in the Emergency Intelligence Incinerator.
*Enter the chamberlock behind you.
}}

Alternative Solutions
{{Spoiler|block=yes|
* By stacking the cameras from the Ratman's Den (and the additional camera that can be detached from the wall) in front of the raised platform, you can reach the platform with the Companion Cube without guiding all the Pellets to the Pellet Catchers.
* Shoot a portal on the wall above the stair pit.
* Shoot the other portal at your feet and as you fall, shoot the exit portal (the one on the wall) onto your landing spot.
* As you come flying up in front of the lift, move backwards to land on the platform.

The promise of Cake is introduced by GLaDOS as an incentive for Chell to complete the test chambers in the original Portal. It is referenced in many of the Rattmann's dens as "a lie", sparking the internet meme "The Cake is a lie".

Portal
The cake is spoken of frequently throughout Portal. It is often mentioned through dialogue as well as Rattmann's wall art in his dens. Although the dens frequently claim that the cake is in fact a lie, the ending of Portal shows the actual cake.

Recipe
In addition to the simple mention of the Cake, an actual recipe is given. The recipe can be found on several computer screens after Chell's escape from death. Additionally, during the battle with GLaDOS, the Intelligence Core will recite the recipe for the Cake. The recipe often contains inedible or undesireable ingredients, such as "fish shaped ethyl benzene" or "cranial caps."
See also: Intelligence Core voice lines

Portal 2
The cake is referenced again in Portal 2, but much more infrequently. The earliest reference to it can be seen on computer monitors; it's recipe is displayed amidst gibberish. Another is referenced once through a sticker on the fake door before GLaDOS takes Chell to her chamber, mentioning that she [[Media:GLaDOS fgbrvtrap02.wav|"...honestly, TRULY didn't think [Chell would] fall for that."]] This contradicts the common notion that GLaDOS may have forgotten about the cake after the destruction of the Intelligence Core.

Trivia
* The cake does not appear in Portal 2 as it did in Portal 1, Eric Wolpaw stated that it was removed because he and Valve were tired of the memes and had had enough of cake jokes.
* The cake slice icon shown on the neon panels throughout Test Chambers in Portal appears in another Valve game, Alien Swarm, as the icon of the achievement "Perfect".
** The icon has also appeared on the TF Birthday Noise Maker item's icon in Team Fortress 2, with the cherry removed.
* The cake was put in the game as inspired from the Black Forest cake sold in a bakery near the Valve headquarters.

The player first encounters the Oracle Turret in Chapter 1 of Portal 2, where the Oracle Turret is stuck in a pneumatic transport tube. The Oracle Turret asks the player to help it, and to take it with her; however the Oracle Turret is inaccessible and Wheatley instructs the player to move past and ignore it.

Chapter 5
The second encounter with the Oracle Turret is on the Turret Redemption Line. The player can pick the turret up from the Turret Redemption Line, at which point is says "Thank you" and an achievement is unlocked for saving it.
If the player ignores it, the Oracle Turret will complete its journey along the Redemption Line and disappear, and will presumably be incinerated and destroyed.
This is the seventeenth level of the game, and takes place within a dilapidated Test Chamber. This level requires the player to utilize their knowledge of the Thermal Discouragement Beam, Buttons and momentum in order to successfully solve the Test Chamber. This level is also unique in that it features a damaged Emancipation Grid, which allows the player to unlock the "Preservation of Mass" achievement. The Weighted Companion Cube is also introduced here.
Trivia
Use the Companion Cube to block the beam then run to the wall by the victory lift and you can pull Wheatley from the wall.
He will not activate the button nor talk to you, but he can be used to block the beam if dropped face down.

Placing the companion cube on the button after collecting Wheatley and using momentum to fling yourself to the exit will cause GLaDOS to say: She will then fizzle the cube on the button thus releasing a further cube form the Vital Apparatus Vent and say:

If you place a portal on the wall past the broken Material Emancipation Grill, you can then retrieve the Companion Cube. However, before you enter the lift, GLaDOS will fizzle the cube and say "I think that one was about to say 'I love you.' They're sentient, of course. We just have a lot of them."
Doug Rattmann, commonly nicknamed as the Rat Man, was a scientist at the Aperture Science Enrichment Center. Prior to the events of Portal while GLaDOS began flooding the entire facility with neurotoxin, Rattmann is the only known employee to have survived.
Rattmann does not appear in-game in any form, instead leaving behind paintings and murals which can be found throughout the backstage of various testing chambers in Portal and the single-player campaign of Portal 2.

Delusional, running low on medication and traveling with what he sees to be a talking Weighted Companion Cube, he watches from the shadows as Chell is put through GLaDOS' testing course. Although he is never spotted in-game in any of the playable Portal series, his refuge areas (referred to as dens) can be found by Chell, containing crude bedding, empty cans of beans and scribblings and dioramas on the walls. It is in one of these dens that the warning phrase "The cake is a lie" can be found scribbled on a wall; as GLaDOS continually promises that there would be cake at the end of testing.

{{spoiler|Following Chell's conflict with GLaDOS after her escape from the testing tracks, the Lab Rat comic details Rattmann's point of view after the events of Portal in which he follows the sound of the explosion and finds a route to the outside world after the destruction of GLaDOS. His joy is short lived as he witnesses an unconscious Chell being dragged back into the facility by the Party Escort Bot. During the events of the single-player campaign of Portal 2, Rattmann's fate is left unknown. Whether or not he is dead is left up to debate, as Chell's cryogenic stasis bed that she used before the events of Portal he took refuge in, had disappeared entirely.

All that is left of him in Portal 2, like in the first game, are wall scribblings and various dioramas depicting either what he witnessed or simply what he feels like expressing.
Known dens
Aside from leaving paintings, murals and messages behind, Doug Rattman also discovered a number hidden rooms in Aperture Science. He adorned these rooms with messages and artwork, and primarily used them as refuges in order to escape GLaDOS' scrutiny. The hidden rooms are present in both Portal and Portal 2, and are known as the Ratman's Dens.

The promise of Cake is introduced by GLaDOS as an incentive for Chell to complete the test chambers in the original Portal. It is referenced in many of the Rattmann's dens as a lie, sparking the internet meme "The Cake is a lie".

The Turret Opera is an event in the single-player campaign of Portal 2 in which a group of Sentry Turrets form a unique melody via the movement sounds of their weaponry casings.

The opera is introduced as an easter egg in Test Chamber 16 of GLaDOS' testing tracks in Chapter 3: The Return, hidden beside a wall with a gap near the start of the chamber, where a Turret can be seen inside it. Upon entering, Chell would be able to witness various Turrets beneath the room as they serenade to the Prima Donna Turret.
