The Crusher was first introduced in Portal 2, and is a derivative of Aperture Science's Panel technology. Crushers are an environmental hazard present in several test environments. If the player makes contact with a Crusher, they will be forced into the nearest hard surface and killed instantly. Crushers appear as large grey panels with a number of steel spikes firmly attached to them.

Crushers become more frequent during the final parts of the game (particularly in Chapter 9: The Part Where He Kills You), and also appear frequently in Co-op mode.

Function
Any object, including the player, will be perforated instantly upon contact with a Crusher. When active, a loud crunching noise is emitted in order to warn the player that they are approaching a Crusher, thereby allowing the player to avoid them.

In Co-op mode, if the player comes in contact with a Crusher while floating in an Excursion Funnel, the damage caused will be periodic until the player moves away or dies.

Trivia
*Crushers were originally intended to appear in Portal, but were removed in the early stages of game development due to the additional complexity they added to test chambers.cite
*Crushers appear in Portal: The Flash version, a 2D flash game released prior to Portal. Later, they appeared in the Portal: The Flash Version MapPack modification, and were eventually introduced into Portal: Still Alive.
*Crushers originally lacked spikes and were ordinary steel plates . This contradicts the Panels video however, as a spiked crusher is clearly visible in the last part of the video, and Cave Johnson states that they can be purchased from Aperture Science.
The Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device (also known as the Portal Gun or ASHPD) is the experimental tool designed to place two portals that objects can pass through. This is the primary tool players are equipped with to complete Test Chambers.

Overview
The Handheld Portal Device is designed to create and place portals on any white surface that is immobile, flat and large enough. When the device is fired, a colored projectile will be emitted from the barrel. If the projectile strikes a valid surface, a portal of the corresponding color will be formed. If a portal of the other color is already placed, these two portals will be linked. If a portal of the same color is already placed, it will be closed and the new one will be used instead, limiting the player to the use of only two portals at a time. The glass chamber and a light on the top of the device will glow with the color of the previously placed portal.

The Handheld Portal Device also has the ability to pick up and manipulate objects directly in front of it in the same manner as the Gravity Gun from the Half-Life series. While holding an object, pressing the primary fire key will push the object forward very slightly, while the secondary fire key will drop the object.

Portal 2
The Handheld Portal Device in Portal 2 behaves somewhat differently to its Portal counterpart. The key differences include new object handling sounds and animations, new sounds for firing portals and faster placement of portals by default. In addition, the Portal Device sports new animations and particle effects for moving portals and stretching objects; while it is possible to enable free rotation of objects via the use of a console command, the remaining functionality is only accessible through the use of a Sixense TrueMotion controller, which allows for the greater degree of control of objects. The Portal Device in Portal 2 also lacks the ability to slightly launch/drop objects using the primary and secondary fire keys respectively.
Gels are a gameplay mechanic introduced in Portal 2. They are paint-like liquids that impart different effects when applied to surfaces and objects.

Gels
Repulsion Gel
Repulsion Gel
Repulsion Gel is a light blue substance that repels objects. A player or an object that hits a surface coated with the Gel bounces off. Due to the effect, the height from which a player falls before landing on a Gel-covered surface affects the height of a jump. Players can also use the Gel to move back and forth between two parallel surface rather than merely be propelled up and down. Objects such as Storage Cubes and Turrets can be covered in Repulsion Gel which causes them to bounce around erratically.

Propulsion Gel
Propulsion Gel
Propulsion Gel is an orange substance that greatly increases object velocity and reduces the friction of objects moving on the surface(s) it is applied to. Objects covered in Propulsion Gel similarly have their friction reduced, causing them to slide around.

Conversion Gel
Conversion Gel
Conversion Gel is a portal-conducting white substance made from ground moon rocks. It enables the player to place portals on surfaces that are not normally portal-conductive.

Water
While not technically a gel, water washes off other gels from surfaces and objects. It has no special properties in regards to gameplay, and does not stick to surfaces.
*A fourth gel, "Sticky Gel", was tested within Portal 2, however it was removed early on during the development due to making play-testers motion-sick.
*Repulsion Gel was Aperture Science's first attempt at creating a dietetic pudding substitute.
*Similar to the way in which the student game Narbacular Drop became Portal, the paint mechanic was borrowed from a student game called Tag: The Power of Paint.
However, the number of willing test subjects has dwindled over the years, and it grows to the point where employees and random strangers are pulled off the streets to be a part of the testing. The technology has advanced greatly, where robots are beginning to replace human employees. He explains that, in one of his wild ideas, he was grounding moon rocks together in the name of science to form a new type of substance called the 'Conversion Gel', most likely named due to its ability to serve as a great portal conductor by converting covered materials into suitable surfaces to place Portals on. However, With his terminal illness still growing worse and with no cure available, he decides to re-purpose the 'conversion gel' to create new portals that would hopefully sap the poison out of him.

With little hope of a cure left, he instructs his engineers to start research on artificial intelligence (AI) and brain mapping in the hopes his brain can be downloaded onto a computer, stating they "should've been doing this 30 years ago". He also states that if he were to die before the technology is released, he leaves instructions that his secretary Caroline will take charge of Aperture Science. He states that he knows she'll decline at first or feel she can't do it, which he follows up with "Force her to do it if you have to". {{spoiler text|During his final days, he states he has tried to purchase a number of "moon rocks". However, his last few recordings indicate that these acquired "moon rocks" have caused him great illness.

The Intelligence Dampening Core, known as Wheatley, had the function of rendering GLaDOS less dangerous by generating an endless stream of stupid ideas to distract her, making her not kill the scientists when activated. == Corrupted Cores ==
Due to technical difficulties over time, a core may be automatically labeled as a Corrupted Core and would be subject to being automatically disposed of. However, if the corrupted core is the central core, a substitute core must be present in a core receptacle to initiate a core transfer. Once a substitute core is found, both cores must agree or disagree to the core transfer procedure. If one agrees while the other disagrees, the transfer process cannot occur unless a stalemate resolution associate is present to press the stalemate resolution button, which will initiate the core transfer process once the associate has returned to the core transfer bay.
The Cooperative Testing Initiative, or Co-op for short, is the separate game mode where two players can join up and take part in test chambers built specifically for cooperative play. The players take the form of either Atlas, the short and blue bot, or P-body, the thin and wiry bot. Each bot comes equipped with their own Handheld Portal Device with separate portal colors. The portals are capable of maintaining the flow of things, even if it enters a partners portal, which is essential during some test chambers. There are five test courses, each with several testing chambers within, which will test both players' ability to solve the different puzzles as they progress. Each chamber becomes much more harder than the last, with the final test taking place outside of the official Aperture testing facilities. In these tests, the players are then put to the test and must use every bit of knowledge earned about the previous tests in the final one. The last chambers of each course, excluding the fifth, the players are told to go out and locate a certain disk for the DVD player found at the end of the course. Once found and inserted within the device, the players are given a few lines from GLaDOS before exploding violently, as it's the only means of getting out of the test chamber. Upon completion, players are then returned to the Hub.

During the testing, GLaDOS will periodically chime in and say a few choice words, either to bemoan the players' progress or point out their tiny flaws. She even goes beyond to try and break their partnership by pointing fingers at one or the other. If the player stands within range of one of GLaDOS' monitoring cameras and perform a gesture, it will illicit a response from GLaDOS, depending on the gesture performed. Players do not have to fear death while testing, as it's commonplace in the machine world. If a player dies, the other player will be given an indication that the other has died and where they died. The dead player will then respawn moments later from the chute the Reassembly Machine sends them through, ready for a second try. The players have an infinite amount of lives, and GLaDOS will comment on every death that occurs with dry humor or irritability. As players progress, they will cross checkpoints that lead into the next part of the test chamber. The checkpoints will allow players who die to respawn at the checkpoint for shorter travel time to the next testing chamber.

Courses
Course One: Team Building
This is one of the first courses available to the player upon entering the Hub, the others remaining locked until the other courses are completed. In this course, the players are given basic tests that emphasize the use of teamwork through portals and pinging, which is a function that allows players to communicate even without text or even through voice. Pings come in a variety of forms, from a simple "Look" ping, to a "Timer" ping that can be used to coordinate timed events effectively.

Course Two: Mass and Velocity
After completing Course One, this course will unlock for players to continue testing. This chamber utilizes the effects portals have when an object has both mass and velocity as it enters the portal, meaning the players must utilize both in order to pass this course.

Course Three: Hard-Light Surfaces
This course opens up upon completion of Course Two. In this course, the players must make use of the Light Bridges to both navigate chambers and act as a wall for other chambers as a defense mechanism or a creative way of stopping something from hurtling into a hazard.

Course Four: Excursion Funnels
This course unlocks upon completion of Course Three. During this course, the player will have to make use of both Light Bridges and Excursion Funnels in order to complete these chambers. It will employ elements from the previous courses as well, making it much more difficult as the players progress.

Course Five: Mobility Gels
This is the final course that unlocks after the completion of Course Four. Upon entering, GLaDOS will chime in the explain the purpose of the testing and what their true purpose is. The players are then dropped into the defunct Aperture testing spheres encountered during single player, and must make use of all elements from the previous chambers along with the Gels that are found in the course. The final course is very difficult, requiring both players to act as a true team.

Course Six: Advanced Chambers
There is evidence within the game's localisation files that there was a sixth course of Co-op chambers during Portal 2's development: Advanced Chambers. Valve has said that in an upcoming DLC, advanced Test Chambers will be introduced to both Single player and Co-op play of Portal 2. There is no known information why these chambers were not available at the launch of Portal 2.
The Weighted Companion Cube (often referred to as the Companion Cube) is a recurring object in the Portal universe.
Chell is the protagonist of both Portal and Portal 2. Little is known about her past beyond her being abandoned at birth and her stubborn will to live. She wields only the Handheld Portal Device throughout her entire quest for freedom.

History
Most of Chells history remains a mystery. Throughout Portal 2, GLaDOS mentions numerous times that Chell was abandoned at birth and later adopted, though the credibility of GLaDOS' word is left up to the interpreter. Many of GLaDOS' comments throughout Portal 2 and the latter stages of Portal are in an effort to belittle, annoy, or distract Chell from achieving her goal, whether or not statements of her adoption are true or not is up for debate.

* One of the Bring Your Daughter to Work Day science-fair entries within Portal 2 is signed, "by Chell"; indicating Chell was the daughter of an Aperture Science employee. However there is no confirmed connection between this and the playable-character Chell. The entry seemingly began as a potato, interacting with "an element from daddys work" and has now grown massively out of control and taken up roots in the structure.
*
It can act as a bridge for the player, a shield against turrets and other hazards, or even a wall for more complex puzzles the player encounters later on. The bridges span an infinite length or until stopped by another solid, meaning the player won't have to worry about the length of the bridge being a problem.
An Excursion Funnel is a new type of technology introduced in Portal 2. This mechanism creates a funnel of energy in which the player may enter and exit at any time. It seems to defy the laws of gravity, allowing any who enter to become weightless and travel along the path of the funnel. Anyone, or anything, caught inside the funnel cannot go backwards willingly, and must rely on the Excursion Funnel reversing, generally through use of a button.

The funnel can also act as a mode of transportation for objects across large gaps, as well as gels. Gels caught in the Excursion Funnel are slowly forced along a path until it collides with a wall or the funnel suddenly disappears, making it excellent for covering large areas in a short amount of time. Turrets coated in Repulsion Gel are instantly thrown into the air, bouncing helplessly until they shutdown.
Jumping off such a surface launches the player higher than a normal jump. Objects such as Storage Cubes and Turrets can be covered in Repulsion Gel, which causes them to bounce around erratically.

Propulsion Gel
A bright orange gel that greatly increases the player's velocity. Objects covered in Propulsion Gel have their friction reduced, causing them to slide around.

Conversion Gel
Conversion Gel is a portal-conducting white liquid made from ground moon rocks. It enables the player to place portals on surfaces that originally are not portal conductive.

Water
Water washes off other gels from surfaces and objects. It has no special properties towards gameplay and does not stick to surfaces.
