Test Chambers are a vital part of the Portal series. Thanks to the Security Cameras fixed onto the walls of Test Chambers at various points, GLaDOS can track a Test Subject's movements and progress. There are multiple Test Chambers throughout The Enrichment Centre. . Upon entering a Test Chamber one acquires a bare (minimal) feeling, similar to a hospital with its sterile environment; this is due to the lighting used within chambers, and the colors of the panels as well.

Neurotoxin, usually referred to as Deadly Neurotoxin, is a gaseous chemical agent that appears in both Portal and Portal 2. Manufactured in the Neurotoxin Production Facility, Neurotoxin can be moved to any part of Aperture Science and is released through a series of Neurotoxin Emitters.

Overview
Neurotoxin is not an environmental hazard in the traditional sense, as it only appears during specific, scripted moments in the Portal Series, usually at the game's climax. Neurotoxin was used by GLaDOS in order to kill all Aperture Science Personnel prior to the commencement of Portal, and is also used by GLaDOS and Wheatley in an attempt to kill Chell.

The Neurotoxin is stored in a reinforced tank (also known as the Neurotoxin Generator) which is located in the bowels of the Aperture Science Facility. Eight main hoses allow the gas to be transferred to any location within the Facility.

The variety of Neurotoxin used within the Aperture Science Facilty is unusual in that a certain concentration is required before it becomes lethal. Until the saturation level has been reached, the gas is not lethal and is presumed to be merely toxic. It is this delay that provides Chell with the opportunity to defeat GLaDOS in Portal and, later, Wheatley in Portal 2.
Portal is the original game of the Portal series. It is a single-player puzzle-based video game developed by Valve and released as part of The Orange Box on October 9, 2007 for Microsoft Windows and Xbox 360; the PlayStation 3 version released at the later date of December 11, 2007. Portal was also re-released as part of the launch of Mac OS X support for Steam on May 12, 2010; to celebrate it was given away for free until May 24, 2010 to Steam users on a promotional page on the Steam website.

Synopsis
Story

{{spoiler text|After Chell completes the final test chamber, GLaDOS congratulates her and prepares her "victory candescence", maneuvering Chell into a pit of fire. As GLaDOS assures her that "all Aperture technologies remain safely operational up to 4,000 degrees [sic] kelvin", Chell escapes with the use of the portal gun and makes her way through the maintenance areas within the Enrichment Center. Throughout this section, GLaDOS still sends messages to Chell and it becomes clear that she has become corrupt and may have killed everyone else in the center. Chell makes her way through the maintenance areas and empty office spaces behind the chambers, sometimes following graffiti messages which point in the right direction. These backstage areas, which are in an extremely dilapidated state, stand in stark contrast to the pristine test chambers. The graffiti includes statements such as "the cake is a lie" and pastiches of Emily Dickinson's poem "The Chariot," Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's "The Reaper and the Flowers," and Emily Brontë's "No Coward Soul Is Mine," mourning the death of the Companion Cube.
GLaDOS attempts to dissuade Chell with threats of physical harm and misleading statements claiming that she is going the wrong way as Chell makes her way deeper into the maintenance areas. Eventually, Chell reaches a large chamber where GLaDOS's hardware hangs overhead. GLaDOS continues to plead with Chell, but during the exchange one of GLaDOS' personality core spheres falls off; Chell drops it in an incinerator. GLaDOS reveals that Chell has just destroyed the morality core, which the Aperture Science employees allegedly installed after GLaDOS flooded the enrichment center with a deadly neurotoxin, and goes on to state that now there is nothing to prevent her from doing so once again. A six-minute countdown starts as Chell dislodges and incinerates more pieces of GLaDOS, while GLaDOS attempts to discourage her both verbally with a series of taunts and increasingly juvenile insults and physically by firing rockets at Chell. After she has destroyed the final piece, a portal malfunction tears the room apart and transports everything to the surface. Chell is then seen lying outside the facility's gates amid the remains of GLaDOS. One of the final scenes is changed through a patch of the PC version that was made available a few days before Portal 2's announcement; in this retroactive continuity, Chell is dragged away from the scene by an unseen entity speaking in a robotic voice, thanking her for assuming the party escort submission position (a reference to GLaDOS's request that she assume this position after escaping).
The final scene, after a long and speedy zoom through the bowels of the facility, shows a mix of shelves surrounding a Black Forest cake and the Weighted Companion Cube. The shelves contain dozens of other personality cores, some of which begin to light up before a robotic arm descends and extinguishes the candle on the cake. As the credits roll, GLaDOS delivers a concluding report: the song "Still Alive", considering the experiment to be a huge success.}}

Development
Portal is Valve's professionally-developed spiritual successor to the freeware Narbacular Drop, the 2005 independent game released by students of the DigiPen; the original Drop team were employed at Valve. Certain elements, like the orange/blue system of identifying the two different portal ends a player can have open at a time (one connecting to the other), have been retained. The key difference in the signature portal mechanic between the two games is that in Narbacular Drop the player can place a portal on a wall visible through another portal, whereas in Portal, the HPD cannot fire a portal shot through a portal; however, the HPD can fire a portal shot while the player is standing in a portal.
The Weighted Companion Cube (often referred to as the Companion Cube) is a recurring object in the Portal universe. It appears almost identical to the Weighted Storage Cube but with a pink heart replacing the Aperture Science logo.

In the first Portal, the Companion Cube was given to Chell to aid her in completing Test Chamber 17. In order to progress through the exit at the end of the chamber, the cube was dropped into the incinerator to be "euthanized". GLaDOS used this moment to taunt Chell during their confrontation.

The Companion Cube makes a prominent appearance in the Portal 2: Lab Rat comic, in which it speaks with protagonist Doug Rattmann. This appears to reference Portal, in which GLaDOS states that the Companion Cube cannot speak and if it does, its advice should be disregarded.
The Excursion Funnel is a game mechanic introduced in Portal 2. The mechanism creates a funnel of energy in which the player may enter and exit at any time. It seems to defy the laws of gravity, allowing any who enter to become weightless and travel along the path of the funnel. Anyone, or anything, caught inside the funnel can only travel in one direction, unless the Funnel is made to reverse which is usually accomplished through the activation of a button.

Excursion Funnels can pass through portals and can cross vast distances, and can therefore can be used to solve puzzles in which Funnels may not initially appear to be useful. If an Excursion Funnel is reversed, then it is possible for objects to use the portals through which the Funnel is acting.

Excursion Funnels can also act as a mode of transportation for the player or objects across large gaps, as well as Gels. Gels caught in the Excursion Funnel will slowly follow the direction of the Funnel until the substance collides with a wall or until the funnel suddenly disappears, making Funnels useful for coating large areas in a short amount of time.
They were created by Aperture Science in order to reduce costs and solve a "reproducible human error problem", which often resulted in the destruction of expensive test equipment (namely the Handheld Portal Device).

Overview
The Long Fall Boots were designed to prevent Test Subjects from injuring themselves when falling from great heights at any speed, even terminal velocity. Although the Boots appear to be a safety precaution for the benefit of Aperture Science Test Subjects, the rationale behind their creation was by no means altruistic. In fact, the Long Fall Boots were created in order to protect the Handheld Portal Device from being destroyed when Test Subjects fell from extreme heights. Although Test Subjects were considered expendable, manufacturing Handheld Portal Devices required significant expenditure.

The precursors to the Long Fall Boots were Chell's Advanced Knee Replacements, which were present in Portal but were destroyed prior to the commencement of Portal 2.
The Advanced Knee Replacement is a device used in Portal to keep Test Subjects from injuring themselves due to falls from great heights. The Cooperative Testing Initiative, or Co-op for short, is the separate game mode where two players can join up and take part in test chambers built specifically for cooperative play. The players take the form of either Atlas, the short and blue bot, or P-body, the thin and wiry bot. Each bot comes equipped with their own Handheld Portal Device with separate portal colors. The portals are capable of maintaining the flow of things, even if it enters a partners portal, which is essential during some test chambers. There are five test courses, each with several testing chambers within, which will test both players' ability to solve the different puzzles as they progress. Each chamber becomes much more harder than the last, with the final test taking place outside of the official Aperture testing facilities. In these tests, the players are then put to the test and must use every bit of knowledge earned about the previous tests in the final one. The last chambers of each course, excluding the fifth, the players are told to go out and locate a certain disk for the DVD player found at the end of the course. Once found and inserted within the device, the players are given a few lines from GLaDOS before exploding violently, as it's the only means of getting out of the test chamber. Upon completion, players are then returned to the Hub.

During the testing, GLaDOS will periodically chime in and say a few choice words, either to bemoan the players' progress or point out their tiny flaws. She even goes beyond to try and break their partnership by pointing fingers at one or the other. If the player stands within range of one of GLaDOS' monitoring cameras and perform a gesture, it will illicit a response from GLaDOS, depending on the gesture performed. Players do not have to fear death while testing, as it's commonplace in the machine world. If a player dies, the other player will be given an indication that the other has died and where they died. The dead player will then respawn moments later from the chute the Reassembly Machine sends them through, ready for a second try. The players have an infinite amount of lives, and GLaDOS will comment on every death that occurs with dry humor or irritability. As players progress, they will cross checkpoints that lead into the next part of the test chamber. The checkpoints will allow players who die to respawn at the checkpoint for shorter travel time to the next testing chamber.

Courses
Course One: Team Building
This is one of the first courses available to the player upon entering the Hub, the others remaining locked until the other courses are completed. In this course, the players are given basic tests that emphasize the use of teamwork through portals and pinging, which is a function that allows players to communicate even without text or even through voice. Pings come in a variety of forms, from a simple "Look" ping, to a "Timer" ping that can be used to coordinate timed events effectively.

Course Two: Mass and Velocity
After completing Course One, this course will unlock for players to continue testing. This chamber utilizes the effects portals have when an object has both mass and velocity as it enters the portal, meaning the players must utilize both in order to pass this course.

Course Three: Hard-Light Surfaces
This course opens up upon completion of Course Two. In this course, the players must make use of the Light Bridges to both navigate chambers and act as a wall for other chambers as a defense mechanism or a creative way of stopping something from hurtling into a hazard.

Course Four: Excursion Funnels
This course unlocks upon completion of Course Three. During this course, the player will have to make use of both Light Bridges and Excursion Funnels in order to complete these chambers. It will employ elements from the previous courses as well, making it much more difficult as the players progress.

Course Five: Mobility Gels
This is the final course that unlocks after the completion of Course Four. Upon entering, GLaDOS will chime in the explain the purpose of the testing and what their true purpose is. The players are then dropped into the defunct Aperture testing spheres encountered during single player, and must make use of all elements from the previous chambers along with the Gels that are found in the course. The final course is very difficult, requiring both players to act as a true team.

Course Six: Advanced Chambers
There is evidence within the game's localisation files that there was a sixth course of Co-op chambers during Portal 2's development: Advanced Chambers. Valve has said that in an upcoming DLC, advanced Test Chambers will be introduced to both Single player and Co-op play of Portal 2. There is no known information why these chambers were not available at the launch of Portal 2.
Gels are a gameplay mechanic introduced in Portal 2. They are paint-like liquids that impart different effects when applied to surfaces and objects.

Gels
Repulsion Gel
Repulsion Gel
Repulsion Gel is a light blue substance that repels objects. A player or an object that hits a surface coated with the Gel bounces off. Due to the effect, the height from which a player falls before landing on a Gel-covered surface affects the height of a jump. Players can also use the Gel to move back and forth between two parallel surface rather than merely be propelled up and down. Objects such as Storage Cubes and Turrets can be covered in Repulsion Gel which causes them to bounce around erratically.

Propulsion Gel
Propulsion Gel
Propulsion Gel is an orange substance that greatly increases object velocity and reduces the friction of objects moving on the surface(s) it is applied to. Objects covered in Propulsion Gel similarly have their friction reduced, causing them to slide around.

Conversion Gel
Conversion Gel
Conversion Gel is a portal-conducting white substance made from ground moon rocks. It enables the player to place portals on surfaces that are not normally portal-conductive.

Water
While not technically a gel, water washes off other gels from surfaces and objects. It has no special properties in regards to gameplay, and does not stick to surfaces.
Portals are the feature gameplay mechanic of the Portal series. Portals are placed by firing the Handheld Portal Device; they work in pairs where they allow two-way movement through each portal. A player can place blue and orange portals in singleplayer, or in Co-op: As Atlas, blue and cyan; and as P-body, red and orange. Lone portals appear as a solid-coloured oval and paired portals appear as a colour-bordered oval - with the "center" being a window to the other portal. Portals are capable of maintaining the mass and velocity of any object that passes through one portal and exits out the other. Portals are also capable of maintaining the flow of light and gravity, specifically the Excursion Funnels and Light Bridges.

The Crusher is a hazard element present in several testing environments, introduced in Portal 2. A player who makes contact with a crusher will be forced to the nearest hard surface and will be killed instantly. Crushers appear as large grey panels with many large, steel spikes firmly attached.

Crushers become more frequent during the final parts of the game (particularly in Chapter 9: "The Part Where He Kills You"), and also appear frequently in co-op mode.

Function
Any object, including the player, will be perforated instantly upon contact with a crusher. When crushing, a loud crunching noise is made to warn the player of its danger, and to indicate to move out of the way quickly.

In co-op mode, if the player comes in contact with a crusher while floating in an Excursion Funnel, the damage caused will be periodic until the player moves away or dies.

Trivia
*Crushers were intended to appear in the original Portal but were removed at early stages of game development due to complexity they add to test chambers.cite
*Crushers appear in Portal: The Flash version, a 2D flash game released prior to Portal. Later they appeared in mod Portal: The Flash Version MapPack and finally made into official Portal: Still Alive.

Panels are the building blocks of the Aperture Science facilities. With the ability to be placed anywhere and shifted at any angle and height, it is capable of nearly infinite design. This makes it an ideal choice when it comes to constructing test chambers, allowing those in charge to create tests on a whim. Panels come in a variety of forms and functions, from lifting the player to obstructing the player from completing their goal.
clr

Function
Panels function to aid or impede the player from completing the task at hand. Sometimes panels can be activated via buttons, which will either remove or create panels. Panels can be applied to nearly every test, making it very useful for trapping a subject or blocking the player from a hazard. This mechanic becomes much more crucial during Co-op, as they're often used for blocking the partner from crashing into a hazard, or used to obstruct the duo from continuing.
I joined while this site was only ten days old, and one day public. Due to this site's young age, it is like GLaDOS rebuilding Apeture Science. The site's creator is GLaDOS, and the mods and admins are the personality cores recently attached to her. Each article is a test, and each image, category, etc. are all parts of the test that must be solved in-order to progress to the next chamber.

I will stay and complete each and everyone of these ever-growing tests. I swear, with that annoying camera above the exit of my relaxation chamber as my witness.
