Cave Johnson is the founder of Aperture Science, which evolved from its precursor, Aperture Fixtures and later Aperture Science Innovators. Cave Johnson first appeared by a username and password scrawled in one of the during Portal, and was fleshed out and provided with additional details during the Portal ARG.

In Portal 2, Cave Johnson became a prominent character through a variety of automated audio recordings from 1952 to as late as sometime in the 1980s.

Cave Johnson is voiced by American actor J. K. Simmons.

History
Shower curtains
In 1943, Cave Johnson created Aperture Fixtures, a shower curtain manufacturer. The precursor to Aperture Science, he selected the name because it 'makes the curtains sound more hygienic'. He became a billionaire after winning contracts to manufacture shower curtains for all branches of the U.S. Military except the Navy, winning the '1943 shower curtain salesman of the year' award.

Aperture Science Innovators
During his career in science, he called upon the wealthy and powerful to join his cause for the future of science. He also employed top scientists and other staff who were dedicated to the field, such as Caroline, and those lacking common sense for the dangers inherent in scientific experimentation.

Aperture
At the time of its creation, Aperture Science Innovations had developed the Aperture Science Portable Quantum Tunneling Device, a prototype to the modern Handheld Portal Device Chell wields.

Aperture Laboratories
Aperture Science
At some point during the 1980s, Cave Johnson had renamed the company to Aperture Laboratories, a name that would be known far into the future. However, the number of willing test subjects had dwindled over the years, and out of desperation, employees and random strangers were pulled off the streets in order to be a part of the testing. The technology had advanced greatly, and robots had started to replace human employees. These employees then become unfortunate victims in Cave's quest for the future of science.

{{spoiler text|During his final days, Cave stated that he had tried to purchase a number of "moon rocks". However, his last few recordings indicated that these acquired "moon rocks" were toxic, and resulted in a fatal illness (possibly silicosis, a real effect from breathing dust from crushed lunar rock, as well as the lunar material being ionized and filled with toxic compounds by cosmic radiation, an effect found in Martian soil). He explained that he contracted the illness when, in one of his wild ideas, he was grinding moon rocks together in the name of science in order to form a new type of substance called the 'Conversion Gel', most likely named due to its ability to serve as a portal conductor and allow portals to be placed on any surface. As the symptoms of his terminal illness became more severe however, he decided to re-purpose the 'conversion gel' to create new portals that would hopefully leech the poison out of his system.

As his illness progressed, Cave's emotional state, already precarious due to the success of his rival Black Mesa, began to deteriorate. It was at this point that Cave mentioned the aphorism "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade". As his condition became more debilitating, Cave's comments became increasingly emphatic, resulting in advice to never give up, "get mad," and "make life take the lemons back!". Despite his attempts to stave off fate, all attempts to cure his affliction failed, and with little hope of a cure, he instructed his engineers to start research on artificial intelligence (AI) and brain mapping in the hope that his brain could be downloaded into a computer. Cave also stated that they "should've been working on it 30 years ago". Fearing that he would die before the release of the technology, he left instructions that his secretary Caroline should take charge of Aperture Science, and that she should be downloaded into the computer intended for him. He stated that he knows that "she'll argue, she'll say she can't", but demands that "[they] make her". It is presumed that Caroline was selected due to her devotion to scientific progress, a trait admired by Cave, and also due to their close relationship. It is unknown what became of Cave himself, but it is presumed that he fell victim to his illness and, ultimately, to science.}}
Trivia
* Based on his portraits and the dates of them, it is generally assumed Cave Johnson was born somewhere between the late 1910s and the early 1920s.
* During early stage of development, Cave Johnson was planned to be the player's sidekick, taking the form of an AI. As the story progressed, he would lose his touch with humanity and eventually try to become a full robot, leading to a robot uprising. Cave would confront the player for their "committed crimes against their brothers-in-arms" and become the game's main antagonist.
**
** He was also planned to be some sort of Storage Cube, which can be seen within some unused subtitles, where
* The 1950s portrait of Cave Johnson bears strong resemblance to a photo of Walt Disney.
* Valve Lead Animator Bill Fletcher was the inspiration for the appearance of Cave Johnson.citation needed
*
* Cave Johnson started the GLaDOS project as a way to cheat death before he died from his moon rock poisoning. If he were to die, he said that he wanted Caroline to be inputted into GLaDOS.
Doug Rattman, also nicknamed as simply the Rat Man, was a scientist at the Aperture Science Enrichment Center. Delusional, running low on medication and traveling with what appears to be a talking Weighted Companion Cube, he watches from the shadows as Chell is put through GLaDOS' testing course. Although he is never spotted in-game in any of the playable Portal series, his refuge areas (referred to as dens) can be found by Chell, containing crude bedding, empty cans of beans and scribblings and dioramas on the walls. It is in one of these dens that the warning phrase "The cake is a lie" can be found scribbled on a wall; as GLaDOS continually promises that there would be cake at the end of testing.
During the events of the single-player campaign of Portal 2, Rattman's fate is left unknown. Whether or not he is dead is left up to debate, as Chell's cryogenic stasis bed that she used before the events of Portal he took refuge in, had disappeared entirely. One piece of evidence for his death is the song called "Ghost of Rattman". Some speculate that Rattman may have made it to the moon, as shown in a hidden picture encrypted into the game's audio file.
By "the ship," Rattman is referring to the Borealis.

Connections to events in Lab Rat
:He's dead. Everyone, dead!<br />
:But she lives! Please, help me, Chell!<br />
:I can touch it!<br />

This could refer to two incidents, both described in Portal 2: Lab Rat.<br />
The first incident
However, these lines could alternatively be referring to

:Little girl, it's ok.<br />
:Your pain is ignored by a little pill.<br />

As shown in Portal 2: Lab Rat, Rattman is dependent on anti-psychotics to treat his paranoid delusions. <br/>

Known dens
Aside from leaving paintings, murals and messages behind, Doug Rattman also discovered a number of hidden rooms in Aperture Science. He adorned these rooms with messages and artwork and primarily used them as refuges in order to escape GLaDOS' scrutiny. The hidden rooms are present in both Portal and Portal 2, and are known as the Ratman's Dens. A total of 13 have been discovered, 6 in Portal and 7 in Portal 2.
* Doug Rattman's can be heard in certain Rat-Man dens in Portal 2, and during the Portal 2 OST track "Ghost of Rattman". These are both voiced by former Valve writer Marc Laidlaw.
* The medication Doug takes in Lab Rat is called ziaprazidone, a version of a real anti-psychotic, ziprasidone.
* The “Armstrong Cube” artwork references his transmission in Portal 2 Chapter 2 Test Chamber 6. If one follows the actions to achieve Final Transmission, the radio emits a Morse-code like sound. When translated, the noise leads to a staticky image of a Weighted Companion Cube on the lunar surface.
* Various wall art by Rattman can be found in the Portal 2 Adventure World in Lego Dimensions, along with a hidden Den. The infamous "cake is a lie" scribblings can also be found on walls, though instead of trailing off, it ends with "the cake is in the kitchen on the second floor."
** Over a year later, the game's developers teased that there were still undiscovered secrets within Lego Dimensions, one of which was related to Portal. In November of 2016, players finally discovered that Doug Rattman himself was hidden throughout various parts of the level "GLaD to Meet You".
Doug Rattman, also nicknamed as simply the Rat Man, was a scientist at the Aperture Science Enrichment Center. Prior to the events of Portal while GLaDOS began flooding the entire facility with neurotoxin, Rattman is the only known employee to have survived. He is stated to be a schizophrenic, and shown to take anti-psychotic medication to ease his delusions and hallucinations.

Rattman does not appear in-game in any form, instead leaving behind paintings and murals which can be found throughout the backstage of various testing chambers in Portal and the single-player campaign of Portal 2.

{{spoiler|Following Chell's conflict with GLaDOS after her escape from the testing tracks, the Lab Rat comic details Rattmann's point of view after the events of Portal in which he follows the sound of the explosion and finds a route to the outside world after the destruction of GLaDOS. His joy is short-lived as he witnesses an unconscious Chell being dragged back into the facility by the Party Escort Bot. You can find the audio file by bringing a radio into Rattman's den in Portal 2 Chapter 2 Test Chamber 6.
:I can touch it!<br />

This could refer to two incidents, both described in Portal 2: Lab Rat.<br />
The first incident {{spoiler|is the infamous Bring Your Daughter to Work Day. He's dead. However, these lines could alternatively be referring to
The official Aperture Science Collaborative Disposition Test describes Doug Rattmann as:

“You’re the quiet, artistic type, happy to ponder the solution to a puzzle in quiet solitude. Compatible cooperative test partners include introspective loners, deaf-mute invisible people, and mannequins.”
Ratman Dens in Portal
I was playing Portal the other night and I believe that there's three of Ratman's Dens in Test Chamber 19, but the wiki page says there's just two. Should I nab screenshots and show where they are? I didn't see any information on which two were listed on the page and which one is missing. - MewtwoWarrior 06:32, 19 October 2011 (UTC)
rattmann clear
It's been confirmed by Valve that Doug was dead a long time before Portal 2, I assume that he bled to death after falling asleep in the relaxation whateveritis. Also, it's not rambling. There are several possible translations of what he's really saying.
But isn't it creepy as hell that you can hear the dead guy speaking? And that no one knows who voiced him?
I think Chell really did have brain damage. <small>— The preceding unsigned comment was added by Test Subject 27 (talk) • (contribs) </small>
Doug Rattmann, Simon Pegg?
Doug Rattmann has to be voiced by Simon Pegg
I just watched the Boxtrolls in which he played a man who was what appeared to be schizophrenic
Then I remembered Doug Rattmann and the voices are much more than identical when you listen to the audio file found in Portal 2
They sound exactly the same. And I did some research and found that Simon Pegg was actually considered to voice a character in Portal 2.

This is just a hunch but could someone get back to me on this?

The official soundtrack, disc 1, has track 1 titled "Ghost of Rattman", but I'm seeing conflicting sources on if his last name has one or two Ns. Is there any first-party definitive source on this, in addition to the soundtrack? Dogman15 (talk) 08:34, 20 December 2022 (UTC)
Paranoid Schizophrenia and the Ghost of Rattmann
So, I understand that when Portal 1 and 2 came out, the DSM still supported subtypes of schizophrenia, but now such things are considered obsolete due to how symptoms crossed over. Is there a way we can denote this or explain it since it's technically outdated?
Also, regarding the 'Ghost of Rattmann' song breakdown, I remembered a couple years ago that Marc Laidlaw answered some questions in regards to half-life, but he also spoke about portal a little and specifically Ghost of Rattmann and the 'lyrics' having no meaning because they were science jargon. However when I went to the reddit post (titled 'Sent an email to Marc Laidlaw about HL3. He answered'), the imgur link no longer worked. : 1: If it's our own description, then updating it to today's standards is not much of an issue. If the source mentions this as something plot-relevant, we should keep the original text "as is", then clarify or explain why and how it is wrong by today's standards (preferably linking to a better source).
Rattman does not appear in-game in any form, instead leaving behind paintings and murals which can be found throughout the backstage of various testing chambers in Portal and the single-player campaign of Portal 2.

Delusional, running low on medication and traveling with what he sees to be a talking Weighted Companion Cube, he watches from the shadows as Chell is put through GLaDOS' testing course.

You can find the audio file by bringing a radio into Rattman's den in Portal 2 Chapter 2 Test Chamber 6.
This could refer to two incidents, both described in Portal 2: Lab Rat.<br />
The first incident
However, these lines could alternatively be referring to

Rattman's name has been spelled both with one and two n's. However, because of Rattman's username "drattmann" in the Portal ARG, it is believed that the correct spelling is with two n's. This is because his username would have been created by Rattman himself, or automatically generated by Aperture Science from his personnel file. His name also appears with two n's in Portal: The Uncooperative Cake Acquisition Game.<br/>

Rattman's name appears with a single n spelling once, on the Songs to Test By track "Ghost of Rattman." This diverges from the common double n spelling, which causes confusion when it comes to the correct spelling.

* Doug Rattman was behind the Aperture Image Format, used in the Portal ARG.
* Doug Rattman's can be heard in certain Rat-Man dens in Portal 2, and during the Portal 2 OST track "Ghost of Rattman".
