The Intelligence Core speaks in a slow, monotonous voice, {{Spoiler|and spends its time reciting a cake recipe, which often has {{Tooltip|unusual|Candy coated peanut butter pieces.
The Intelligence Core is voiced by Ellen McLain.

The recipe he gives in LEGO Dimensions consists of "fish-shaped solid waste, a single banana, and a cup of lemonade." These are all included in the actual cake recipe.

The promise of Cake is introduced by GLaDOS as an incentive for Chell to complete the test chambers in the original Portal. It is referenced in many of the Rattmann's dens as "a lie", sparking the internet meme "The Cake is a lie".

Portal
The cake is spoken of frequently throughout Portal. It is often mentioned through dialogue as well as Rattmann's wall art in his dens. Although the dens frequently claim that the cake is in fact a lie, the ending of Portal shows the actual cake.

Recipe
In addition to the simple mention of the Cake, an actual recipe is given. Additionally, during the battle with GLaDOS, the Intelligence Core will recite the recipe for the Cake. The recipe often contains inedible or undesireable ingredients, such as "fish shaped ethyl benzene" or "cranial caps." A seperate recipe is given in LEGO Dimensions during the credits. It is mostly edible except for the last part, a layer of clay.
See also: Intelligence Core voice lines

Portal 2
The cake is referenced again in Portal 2, but much more infrequently. The earliest reference to it can be seen on computer monitors; it's recipe is displayed amidst gibberish. Another is referenced once through a sticker on the fake door before GLaDOS takes Chell to her chamber, mentioning that she [[Media:GLaDOS fgbrvtrap02.wav|"...honestly, TRULY didn't think [Chell would] fall for that."]] This contradicts the common notion that GLaDOS may have forgotten about the cake after the destruction of the Intelligence Core.

Trivia
* The cake does not appear in Portal 2 as it did in Portal 1, Eric Wolpaw stated that it was removed because he and Valve were tired of the memes and had enough of cake jokes.
* The cake slice icon shown on the neon panels throughout Test Chambers in Portal appears in another Valve game, Alien Swarm, as the icon of the achievement "Perfect".
** The icon has also appeared on the TF Birthday Noise Maker item's icon in Team Fortress 2, with the cherry removed.
* The cake was put in the game as inspired from the Black Forest cake sold in a bakery near the Valve headquarters.

It is one of many cores that was attached to GLaDOS in order to regulate her behavior. It was programmed to prevent her from doing unethical deeds, acting as an artificial conscience. When Doug Rattmann first sees the Morality Core, he doubts its capability to restrain GLaDOS, saying "You can always ignore your conscience".
{{Spoiler|At the end of Portal, it falls off of GLaDOS' body, possibly intentionally. GLaDOS repeatedly tells Chell not to touch it, but she disregards this advice and destroys it in an Emergency Intelligence Incinerator. With her conscience removed, GLaDOS is free to flood her chamber with neurotoxin.
GLaDOS is voiced by opera singer and voice actress Ellen McLain.

Background
After a decade's worth of hard work, GLaDOS was officially activated in 1998, as part of one of the many events during the company's "Bring Your Daughter to Work" day. Since she was able to take control of half of the facility's features, GLaDOS began killing most of its inhabitants by flooding the Enrichment Center with neurotoxin. However, only few if not only one of the staff such as Doug Rattmann had survived her attacks along with the series' main protagonist, Chell. The destruction of the company also coincided with an invasion of Earth, which had occurred two days after at Aperture's rival company, Black Mesa. This ultimately led to the negligence of the outside world from realizing Aperture's fate, as all attention had been diverted to Black Mesa and the aforementioned invasion.

Since the attack, she has managed the company to her limits.

Prior to the events of Portal, one of Aperture's technicians, Doug Rattmann, successfully evaded GLaDOS' attempts to flood the Enrichment Center with neurotoxin. He then took refuge in several departments throughout the facility and began tampering with the initial test subject roster, rearranging Chell to the top of the list as Test Subject #1 instead. Since GLaDOS initiated a lockdown, Rattmann was forced to live his whole life hiding between the backstages of Test Chambers in the Enrichment Center. He then left various warnings of GLaDOS through graffiti that could only be found behind several corrupted wall panels in Test Chambers, in hopes that Chell would later stumble upon them. GLaDOS was able to operate the company all while residing in her Central AI Chamber, despite lacking full control over the facility.

She then awakens Chell for her mandatory testing of the Handheld Portal Device, which began the events of Portal. During these time periods, she had constantly intimidated Chell during her performances and given bitter yet innocent sarcastic notions by simply acting out like conveniently placed pre-recorded messages.

After Chell completed the final test chamber,

Beginning the major events of Portal 2, GLaDOS is reactivated through the accidental efforts of both Wheatley and Chell having tried to access an escape lift to the surface in the Central AI Chamber, as both of them were previously trapped in the building following GLaDOS' destruction.

GLaDOS then decides to return Chell to the facility's science experiments to further her cause of science, but often makes various taunts in hopes to crush her morale.

{{spoiler|As Chell and GLaDOS continue to journey through the pasts of Aperture Science located in the salt mine deep beneath the Enrichment Center, GLaDOS slowly becomes familiar to Johnson and Caroline.

From then on, she conducts tests on the two robot test subjects; Atlas and P-body.

Cooperative testing era
Sometime after Chell is freed from the Enrichment Center, GLaDOS has been primarily focusing on her two new android test subjects Atlas and P-body, as part of the Cooperative Testing Initiative. Typical to her nature, she would constantly find a way to crush their spirits via sarcasm and expressing herself to be having little hope for them.

{{spoiler|When the bots are rebuilt again, she deploys the additional testing course; Art Therapy. As the bots begin testing, she treats the course as if it were an art museum despite the obvious malfunctioning environment such as her lack of control in putting the test chambers together properly, and a flood arising around a section of the facility during testing. Eventually, the reassembly machines have begin malfunctioning - causing her to wait three days before the robots could be reassembled to deliver the duo to their next test chamber. GLaDOS then gives in and confesses that she is in need of their help and that someone has been tampering with the facility via control of an old prototype chassis of the central core. To resolve this, she trains the bots into becoming her "killing machines" by deploying them into more challenging tests during their course. GLaDOS then sends them closer to the chamber housing the chassis, and later jokingly calls them as her "Special Team Falling Into Acid Force". When the bots reach the chamber, they discover it was never a person, but even worse - a bird nesting above the keyboard on the machine. GLaDOS, already aware of it being a bird since the beginning, panics and instructs them abort the mission, before P-body closes a hatch that the bird flew out from. As the bots stare at the chassis, GLaDOS panics that the bird had been "gestating clones" on the keyboard and forces them to destroy the eggs. With the bots hesitant, she conjures a better idea and houses the birds in the Central AI Chamber, where she could nurture them directly.}}
The fate of these birds remain unknown until further test courses are added.}}

Perpetual testing era
Abilities and traits
As the overseer and operator of the facility, GLaDOS is seemingly omnipotent, able to reconfigure rooms and carry out actions at her will. She monitors the facility and its test chambers through cameras mounted on walls. GLaDOS had displayed little to no emotion within her voice tone in the first half of Portal, due to being bound by the consciousness of other personality cores attached onto her for the sole purpose of restricting her true thoughts. She then becomes increasingly more agitated and is portrayed as a narcissist during Chell's escape attempts.

GLaDOS' consciousness had been controlled by personality cores throughout the events of Portal.

GLaDOS' status as the central core allows her to have various controls over the Enrichment Center. Apart from being able to build, reconstruct or deface test chambers, GLaDOS is able to provide the pneumatic pressures serving as the vacuum inside the tube networks across the facility - a power which the Announcer could only handle the elevator tube shafts in the chamberlocks. In Portal, GLaDOS was able to steer away the vacuum directions inside the tubes and managed to pull Chell back into Test Chamber 09 after the latter attempted to travel inside a burst tube.

Development and acting
During Anime Midwest 2011, voice actress Ellen McLain revealed that the premise of GLaDOS had always been a robotic voice that would guide the protagonist and often intimidates them. Early on development, Valve had used copyrighted voice samples as a placeholder for GLaDOS. As Ellen McLain previously voiced the radio communications dispatcher of the Combine Overwatch throughout the Half-Life 2 saga, the developers had chosen her for the role of GLaDOS. During this time, developers had kept the development quiet, leaving Ellen unaware what game it is that she is doing voice work for. Ellen was later made aware of her work and success when Portal was finally released.

In Portal 2, GLaDOS' dialogue shortly after her awakening were originally much more insulting. As playtesters grew uncomfortable with her insults, it was then decided that GLaDOS continues her passive-aggressive behavior which she began from the Portal credits song, Still Alive.

Appearance-wise in Portal, GLaDOS' initial designs prior to the game's release varied greatly. The earliest known design of GLaDOS was a large disc with a red eyeball in the center, with the disc surrounding it and welded onto the eyeball. This concept of GLaDOS appears to be the most favorable version towards several community members and was then recreated for use on a character entirely for the community-made machinima series, The Underground. Later on in development, the design of the large eyeball was then scrapped into a robotic body hanging upsidedown from the ceiling, with four discs surrounding above it this time. This concept has since been kept for the release of Portal, with minor adjustments such as the addition of personality cores.

In the game's commentary mode, Jeremy Bennett (art director) describes GLaDOS's design: "[...] we settled on a huge mechanical device with a delicate robotic figure dangling out of it, which successfully conveys both [her] raw power and her femininity." Originally, according to Bennett, she resembled an upside-down version of Botticelli's "Rise of Venus".

The earliest known concept art of GLaDOS' design for Portal 2 was through one of the many concept box arts; demonstrating that her body's plating was completely torn and scrapped, leaving only her head the most intact - nearing the design of her spherical-cylinder shaped head in the game's release. She had also been given a red eye color in this concept rather than her trademark yellow that was given to her in Portal. Not much else is known of her design changes during the sequel, except that the developers established that the current design of GLaDOS in Portal 2 was to signify a more antagonistic appearance and shape.

In addition, an unused reskin of GLaDOS' design from Portal can be found in the game files of Portal 2, presenting rust stains and scratches possibly to be used for her components scattered around in her chamber.
Trivia
* The acronym "GLaDOS" is a pun of the name "Gladdys" and the term DOS (Disc Operating System).

* Ellen McLain, the actress that voices GLaDOS, also provides the voice for the Administrator in Team Fortress 2 and the Combine Overwatch in the Half-Life series. This makes Ellen McLain the only voice present in every game included in the The Orange Box.

* The most favored character that Ellen McLain has voiced is none other than GLaDOS. She reveals that despite the hard effort in pulling off the voice of the Administrator from Team Fortress 2 and her unique way of ordering things, GLaDOS' character had a greater impact on her through her popular passive-aggressive behavior and subtle insults.

* GLaDOS makes a cameo appearance in the Telltale game Poker Night 2, where she plays the role of the dealer and occasionally banters with the other players. She also appears as one of the many minor antagonists in LEGO Dimensions.

* During the development of Portal 2, playtesters were uncomfortable with GLaDOS as she was far too vindictive in the single-player campaign, and the developers concluded that some of her dialogue was too extreme. Due to this, elements of her dialogue were reworked, which resulted in the creation of a more amicable, passive-aggressive personality for GLaDOS.

* In the single-player campaign of Portal 2, Wheatley would only refer to GLaDOS as "her" or "she".

*

* On the 2011 Video Game Awards, Portal 2 had won the award for "Best Performance by a Human Female" for Ellen McLain's role as GLaDOS.
Defective Turrets, also called "Crap Turrets" by Wheatley, are damaged, ammo-less, unfinished, or faultily assembled Sentry Turrets. Unlike normal Sentry Turrets, Defective Turrets have a more humorous and sarcastic dialogue, and speak in a masculine, less robotic voice.
They are harmless to Chell, many times making comments such as "If anyone asks, I killed you". Their voice lines seem to imply they are blind, but they are still aware of Chell's presence. They are first encountered in Chapter 5: The Escape.

Overview
*They lack the outer white shell of normal turrets, and their insides are visible. Additionally, their laser guide is off or broken, and their dialogue indicates they are blind, though they seem to notice Chell regardless. They also seem to be out of bullets, as when they fire, only a clicking sound is made. After a while, they bizarrely catch on fire and explode. Some even appear to have been assembled sideways, or are still in their boxes.

*In Chapter 5 of Portal 2, Chell sabotages the assembly lines by replacing the template turret with a defective one, causing all the fully functional turrets to be thrown out. This does not prevent fully-functional turrets from appearing later, so it's possible this problem was later rectified or did not affect the turrets which had already been built.

*When GLaDOS attempts to surround Chell with turrets, she instead uses these because of the earlier sabotage. They simply stand around and click, then explode.

*Wheatley later repeats this error when he plans a perfectly good ambush for Chell, but uses defective turrets instead of working ones, despite knowing of Chell's sabotage. Once again they explode harmlessly.

*They speak in a masculine voice rather than the feminine ones like the rest of the turrets. Their voices also seem to lack the robotic edge of the normal turrets.

*They sometimes will ask other turrets for bullets, try to speak in a higher voice to imitate non-defective ones, and humorously shout "Blam! Blam! Blam! I'm not defective!" in a vain attempt to not get tossed out.

*Certain defective turrets are in boxes. They do not shoot and blow up nearly instantly.

Trivia
*These are not to be confused with the Oracle Turret, which is fully assembled but says different lines in a different voice.

*If the player grabs one before moving the template turret and switches them instantaneously, the template turret exploding will cause the defective turret to become slightly misaligned. Despite this, the system still functions correctly.

*The turrets appearing in Course 5 of Cooperative Testing Initiative look like defective turrets but work and speak properly. This, possibly, means that defective turrets are built by broken 20th century machines, as Course 5 is set in the old Enrichment Center.

*Hacking a functioning turret into the game and placing it in the Master Turret Booth will cause it to change its model to a defective turret.

*they appear in the turret opera.

Sentry Turrets are miniature tripod robots that appear in every game in the Portal series. They are seen as incapable of independent movement, but can open each side of their chassis (their 'arms') horizontally in order to reveal twin double-barreled machine guns. The central part of the chassis holds their red eye, which emits a targeting laser. Almost all of the space within the Turret is devoted to storing the ridiculously stacked ammo, explaining the nearly infinite supply of ammo when firing. According to the Portal 2 Turrets trailer, the turrets use spring mechanisms to accelerate the whole bullet, including the casing, which may explain how the player can survive getting shot by the Turret so many times.

When test subjects are out of sight from the Turret's presence, they will maintain a standby state and will remain motionless with their guns retracted. Moving into their angle of sight however, will cause Turrets to deploy their guns shortly after greeting the unlucky individual before opening fire. They will continue to fire until the target is dead or moves out of sight. If the latter occurs, Turrets will briefly search for the test subject (as indicated by the movement of the targeting laser), after which they will revert to a standby state.

Turrets can be avoided, disabled or destroyed in a number of ways. The most common method is knocking them over, causing them to flail and fire wildly before deactivating. This can be done by picking them up and dropping them, or using any object to tip them over. Additionally, the Discouragement Beams or Emancipation Grills can be used to completely destroy them. They also emit a long "ooowowowowow" noise if thrown into a fizzler grill.

In Portal, Turrets will shoot the bulletproof glass when the player is on the other side. In Portal 2, however, Turrets will only follow the player behind glass.
The Rocket Turret is a unique enemy seen at the end of Portal. It appears as a raw personality core outfitted with a rocket launcher. Upon activation, it will slowly lock onto Chell and emit a sound before firing a rocket. Unlike Sentry turrets, it cannot be disabled or destroyed by the player.

Rockets can also be redirected by Chell to shatter the observation windows throughout the offices of the Enrichment Center.

Rocket Turrets used to play a major role in Portal 2Citation needed, but were later cut.

Defective Turrets, referred to as "Crap Turrets" by Wheatley, are incomplete, sometimes ammo-less versions of the Sentry Turrets introduced in Portal 2. Unlike normal Sentry Turrets, Defective Turrets have a more humorous and sarcastic dialogue, and speak in a masculine, less robotic voice with a Texas-like accent.

They are harmless to Chell, many times making comments such as "If anyone asks, I killed you". Their voice lines seem to imply they are blind, but they are still aware of Chell's presence. They are first encountered in chapter 5, The Escape.

In the game's co-op campaign, the Defective Turrets appear as obstacles for Atlas and P-body throughout the Mobility Gels testing course. These Turrets appear to be as fully functional as regular Sentry Turrets and possesses the innocent and feminine voice tones as they should. The only difference from regular Turrets is that they have been defaced.

Frankenturrets do not speak, and instead emit incomprehensible chirping sounds. They generally serve as Wheatley's replacement for Storage Cubes once Chell is available as his test subject. Their only difference from normal cubes being that Frankenturrets will hop around aimlessly when not placed on a button. When picked up by Chell, they retract their legs inside the cube. If they fall over on their sides or upside down, they will wave their legs trying to get up.
Animal King Turret
The Animal King Turret is a unique type of turret in the single-player campaign of Portal 2 that is only used in an Aperture Science slideshow to represent an "Animal King Takeover" in the chapter, The Courtesy Call. The Turret is considerably colossal in comparison to its Sentry Turret brethren, and appears to operate the 'arms' on its side in exactly the same way.

It can be distinguished from ordinary Turrets by its immense size, crown and leopard skin-detailed chassis. In the context of the slideshow, the Animal King Turret is used as an example of an entity or a form of organism capable of taking control of Earth which "".

The Animal King Turret appears only once in the entire game, . It appears to be producing the lower bass tones of the Turret Opera.
The Hover Turret is an unused Turret found within the game files of Portal 2. It uses the model of the Curiosity Core. It emits a laser, similar to the other types of Turrets, that is coloured light-blue and able to burn the player similar to the burn of the Thermal Discouragement Beam, however unlike the Thermal Discouragement Beam it's laser does not provide a barrier for the player's movement, nor does it interact with game mechanics. The Hover Turret can be spawned within Portal 2 via the cheat command <code>ent_create npc_hover_turret</code>. It can also be found in Chapter 8 Test Chamber 1 in Portal 2 by using the <code>noclip</code> command and going throught the wall behind the Level Screen (it should say 1/19) and looking to the left.
He serves as the game's deuteragonist, guiding Chell through her efforts in escaping the Aperture Science Enrichment Center.

Wheatley is voiced by British actor and comedian Stephen Merchant.

Background
Prior to the events of Portal 2, Wheatley took charge of maintaining the Extended Relaxation Center - which houses test subjects in long-term cryogenic stasis before and after they are put through the testing courses. However, what he has done to actually manage the entire wing remains unmentioned. It was only until many centuries later that Wheatley decided to escape the facility. To accomplish this, he attempted to gather help from any remaining test subject that managed to last centuries after running out of cryogenic supply. Luckily for him, Chell was one of them if not the only one that lasted.

Wheatley is first seen during the very beginning of the game during the chapter The Courtesy Call, wherein he removes Chell from her Relaxation Vault and puts her into one of the old testing tracks, so she can find a Handheld Portal Device and help him escape. After she acquires the device, he meets up with her and detaches himself from his management rail to accompany her to the Central AI Chamber so they can access an escape pod to the surface. He uses his compatibility with the Enrichment Center's systems to allow passage through a testing chamber's backstage.

{{spoiler|Once this is done, Chell and Wheatley return to the Central AI Chamber through the Tubes to confront GLaDOS. The Announcer detects GLaDOS as a corrupted central core and offers a core transfer. A stalemate is reached between Wheatley and GLaDOS, and Chell has to push the Stalemate Resolution Button. Once Chell does this, the core transfer commences. GLaDOS' head is removed from her body and Wheatley is put in its place, putting him in control of the facility. He summons an elevator for Chell to escape to the surface, but just as the elevator is starting to rise, Wheatley grows corrupted with power and lowers it back down. He says spitefully that all Chell does is boss him around (Ironically, Chell never says a word in either game), but now he is the boss and she is at his mercy. Wheatley transfers GLaDOS' core programming to a small computer chip powered by a potato battery as an attempt to humiliate her. In her potato form, GLaDOS suddenly recognizes Wheatley's voice. She tells him that he was originally designed as an Intelligence Dampening Sphere, "producing an endless stream of terrible ideas", essentially "designed to be a moron".

Trivia
* Appearance-wise, Wheatley appears to be a variant of GLaDOS' Intelligence Core (the one telling the cake recipe), with a blue "eye" and three dots, though Wheatley has dots only on his right side and possesses a white light as his iris instead.

* Wheatley's Cockney#Cockney_speech heard in the Meet Wheatley (video) video shown at E3 2010 uses a placeholder voice provided by Valve animator Richard Lord. Due to very positive feedback, Valve considered at some point making the voice official. Later Lord himself emphasized that his voice was temporary, saying that "theres no way you will be dissapointed with the final voice - i'm over the moon with who it might be." [sic], until it was announced that Stephen Merchant would provide the final voice.

* wheatly appears in lego dimensions helping chell, gandalf, batman, and wyldstyle escape the facility.

* Portal 2 then won the award for "Best Performance by a Human Male" with Stephen Merchant's portrayal of Wheatley.

* Wheatley makes a cameo appearance in an official plugin, created by Bethesda and Valve, for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, entitled

* In the developer commentary of Portal 2, it is revealed that he was originally intended to have tried escaping with other subjects prior to waking Chell up. This still remains in the game, as during the final boss battle, he says that he tried escaping with 6 people prior. However, due to his nature and the heat of the battle, it is unknown if he was lying or not.
*
Anger Core
The Anger Core is a personality core that appears in Portal.

The Anger Core is quite literally a sphere of fury. It lacks the ability to speak, instead resorting to making animalistic roars, snarls, and growls. It will also whimper when you hold it over the incinerator.

The Anger Core is voiced by Mike Patton.
Trivia
* Ellen McLain, at her 'So You Broke My Heart and Killed Me' panel during Anime West 2011, revealed that she was originally asked to voice the Anger Core. It was later decided that Mike Patton, lead singer of the alternative metal band Faith No More, should voice the core, as McLain's voice "just couldn't sound mean enough" for the part.
* The Anger Core's characteristic growls are reused in Left 4 Dead and it's sequel, Left 4 Dead 2.
* In Portal 2, Aperture Science Bombs bear a striking resemblance to the Anger Core. The Bomb shares an "angry" animation with the Anger Core, making it possible that the Core was to make a reappearance in Portal 2 at some point during development.
** A similar red-eyed personality core appears in the "Portal 2 - The Final Hours" digital ebook.
