Repulsion Gel is a light blue substance that repels objects, and any player or object that hits a surface coated with Replusion Gel will bounce off. Jumping off such a surface launches the player higher than a normal jump, and the height of the jump is proportional to the distance a player falls before rebounding from the Gel. This allows the player to reach higher ledges and platforms by falling from a greater height. When used in combination of Propulsion Gel, the player can travel a considerable distance, which is vital in situations in which Portals cannot be used. Objects such as Storage Cubes and Turrets can be covered in Repulsion Gel, which causes them to bounce around erratically.

Crouching will negate the effects of Repulsion Gel, and is useful for situations in which players find it difficult to stop bouncing and require more control over their movements.

Function
Repulsion Gel can be applied to virtually any surface, and can be placed in different locations through the use of carefully-placed portals. The Gel is most useful when applied to surfaces at the bottom of pits, at the edges of large gaps, or to closely-spaced parallel walls, which allows the player to move between them by bouncing from one to the other. The Gel is primarily used to circumvent large gaps, and/or cover considerable distances.
*Aperture's second attempt at a dietetic pudding substitute resulted in Repulsion Gel, a much sweeter, slightly less non-toxic form of fiberglass insulation that caused subsequently-ingested food items to bounce off the lining of the dieter's distended stomach and out his or her mouth.
**For various reasons, this product also was pulled from the shelves.

Trivia
*Despite repeated warnings, being covered in Repulsion Gel will not cause any harm to the player, apart from briefly obstructing their vision.
Propulsion Gel is a bright orange substance that greatly reduces the friction of objects moving across the surface to which it is applied. Propulsion Gel also increases velocity, as objects covered in Propulsion Gel also have their friction reduced, causing them to slide around and be moved more easily.
Wheatley: Okay, alright, so, I've got an idea, but it is bloody dangerous. Here we go...

[Click]

Wheatley: AAAH! ...oh, for God's-they told me, that if I ever turn this flashlight on, I would die! They told me that about everything! I-I don't even know why they would bother giving me this stuff if they didn't want me to use it, it's pointless! Mad!

Wheatley: Here's an interesting story, you might like this; I almost got a job down here, in manufacturing, but uh, guess who the foreman went with? Only an exact duplicate of himself. Nepotism. Ends up giving me the worst possible job, tending to all the smelly humans...

Wheatley: The...the, um...sorry about that, that just slipped out...

Wheatley: Okay, this looks dangerous. I'll hold the light down here.

Wheatley: Oh, nicely done!

Wheatley: Ohh, I'll tell you...humans, aah, love 'em, just...the way they look, that's great...and their...f, folklore. Wonderful, very colorful.

Wheatley: Quick, this way!

Turret: Hello?

Wheatley: Right...well. I'm just going to take this rail, down the back way. See you, oh, good luck.

Turret: There you are.

Wheatley: There's a password, it's fine, I'll-I'll just hack it, not a problem. Okay...

Relaxation Chambers are rooms in which test subjects are held in stasis until it is time for them to begin testing. They contain beds, tables, and toilets, and generally can only be entered and exited by way of a portal. These chambers appear in both Portal and Portal 2.

Appearances
In Portal, Chell awakens to find herself in a Relaxation Vault in Test Chamber 00 at the very beginning of the game. After being briefly introduced to the testing environment by GLaDOS, an orange portal opens and she is free to walk into the first test chamber.

In Portal 2,
Development
In the early stages of Portal 2, when it was a prequel titled F-STOP, a piece of concept artwork involving Relaxation Vaults for robots was created.
Cave Johnson is the founder of Aperture Science, which was built from Aperture Science Innovators. He was briefly mentioned in Portal, then was mentioned with additionnal details during the first Portal 2 ARG, before becoming a more prominent character in Portal 2, in the form of tape recordings he leaves behind.

Cave Johnson is voiced by American actor J. K. Simmons.

History
Shower curtains
In 1953 Cave Johnson sets up Aperture Fixtures, a shower curtain manufacturer. The precursor to Aperture Science, he chose the name because it 'makes the curtains sound more hygienic'. He becomes a billionaire after winning contracts to manufacture the US Military's shower curtains.

Aperture Science Innovators
During his career in science, he called on the wealthy or power elite to join his cause for the future of science, as well as those with the brains, much like Caroline, and those lacking common sense for the dangers of science.

Aperture
At the time of creation, Aperture Science Innovations had created the Aperture Science Portable Quantum Tunneling Device, a prototype to the modern Handheld Portal Device Chell wields.

Aperture Laboratories
Aperture Science
Sometime during the 80's, Cave Johnson had renamed the company Aperture Laboratories, a name that would be known far into the future. However, the number of willing test subjects has dwindled over the years, and it grows to the point where employees and random strangers are pulled off the streets to be a part of the testing. The technology has advanced greatly, where robots are beginning to replace human employees. Said employees then become unfortunate victims of science in Cave's visions of the future of science.

During Portal, when Chell makes her first escape, there are several "Rattmann Nests" that are scattered throughout the facility. In one of them, there are several pictures of a suited man with a small picture of a Companion Cube over his face, along with the words "Our Founder" found in one of the photos. .
First Portal 2 ARG
Additional details about Portal 2 background were provided by the first Portal 2 ARG, which took place in March 2010. On those notes, Cave Johnson's life, as well as Aperture history, look much different than in Portal 1, foreseeing the retconned Aperture history showcased in Portal 2 : {{spoiler text|most notably, some of the ARG text findings are written into the form of Cave Johnson's post-mortem memos, implying that Johnson's consciousness was uploaded into an AI, much like Caroline's in the final game.<ref>BBS resource list @ Combine OverWiki. == Trivia ==
* During early stage of development, Cave Johnson was planned to be the player's sidekick, taking the form of an AI. As the story progressed, he would lose his touch with humanity and eventually try to become a full robot, leading to a robot uprising. Cave would confront the player for their "commited crimes against their brothers-in-arms" and become the game's main antagonist.
Portals are the feature gameplay mechanic of the Portal series. Portals are placed by firing the Handheld Portal Device; they work in pairs where they allow two-way movement through each portal. A player can place blue and orange portals in singleplayer, or in Co-op: As Atlas, blue and cyan; and as P-body, red and orange. Lone portals appear as a solid-coloured oval and paired portals a colour-bordered oval - with the "center" being a window to the other portal. Portals are capable of maintaining the mass and velocity of any object that passes through one portal and exits out the other. Portals are also capable of maintaining the flow of light and gravity, specifically the Excursion Funnels and Light Bridges.

World Portals
Within certain levels there are World Portals. These are invisible portals that can be used to create the illusion of a larger area.
This is caused by the Portal mechanic pushing the player away from a portal if the portal is re-placed somewhere else (or in this case, in the same place.)
A Hard-Light Bridge, or simply called Light Bridge, is a semi-translucent solid made from natural sunlight beamed in from the surface. It can act as a bridge for the player, a shield against turrets and other hazards, or even a wall for more complex puzzles the player encounters later on. The bridges span an infinite length or until stopped by another solid, meaning the player won't have to worry about the length of the bridge being a problem.

Hard-Light Bridges can also be covered in Mobility Gels, allowing the player to use the gels in places where it normally would just fall through. Gel is a gameplay implement introduced in Portal 2. They are paint-like liquids that impart different effects on surfaces and objects.

Gels
Propulsion Gel
The bright orange Propulsion Gel greatly increases the player's velocity. Objects covered in Propulsion Gel have their friction reduced, causing them to slide around.

Repulsion Gel
Repulsion Gel is a light blue substance that repels objects. A player or an object that hits a surface coated with it bounces off. Jumping off such a surface launches the player higher than a normal jump. Objects (such as Storage Cubes and Turrets) can be covered in Repulsion Gel, which causes them to bounce around erratically on all types of surfaces.

Conversion Gel
Conversion Gel is a portal-conducting white liquid. It enables the player to place portals on surfaces that normally do not support portals.

Water
Water washes off other gels from surfaces and objects. It has no special properties and does not stick to surfaces.
An Excursion Funnel is a new type of technology introduced in Portal 2. This mechanism creates a funnel of energy in which the player may enter and exit at any time. It seems to defy the laws of gravity, allowing any who enter to become weightless and travel along the path of the funnel. Anyone caught inside the funnel cannot go backwards willingly. Only by reversing the flow of the Excursion Funnel, usually through a button that activates the reversal of the funnel.

The funnel can also act as a mode of transportation for objects across large gaps, as well as gels. Gels caught in the Excursion Funnel are slowly forced along a path until it collides with a wall or the funnel suddenly disappears, making it excellent for covering large areas in a short amount of time. Turrets coated in Repulsion Gel are instantly thrown into the air, bouncing helplessly until they shutdown.
The Aerial Faith Plate is a mechanism introduced in Portal 2. This device launches players at a set velocity and height, usually to a destination over a gap or the other part of a test chamber. It can be used in junction with portals and their ability to preserve velocity while passing through, making it simple to get to places further away.

Aerial Faith Plates can launch any object that is placed on it, from a standard Weighted Storage Cube to a Turret, it'll launch these objects the same distance as the player at the same speed. These are also encountered in Co-op, including the Hub, where they're used as a form of traveling to another course where portals cannot reach. The mechanism is designed so that the player is launched either directly upwards, forwards, or backwards in motion.

Within certain levels there are World Portals (Brush entity, <code>$TODO</code>). These are invisible portals that can be used to create the illusion of a larger area - for example, {{Spoiler text|As a player enters Chapter 6 of Portal 2, they fall down a long tube.
The Aperture Science Material Emancipation Grill (also known as Emancipation Grills or fizzlers), are shimmering, semi-transparent particle fields that appear in the Aperture Science testing facilities. Emancipation Grills disintegrate any object and blocks any portal that passes through, while allowing the player and the Handheld Portal Device to pass without issue.

Function
The primary function of the Emancipation Grid is to vaporize any unauthorized equipment that passes through it while allowing test subjects and the Handheld Portal Device to pass through. When something is vaporized, the object turns black, hovers in mid-air, and disintegrates, emitting small flames and sparks. In Portal 2, this is accompanied with a loud sound when the object comes in contact with the Grid. The Emancipation Grid will glow brightly in Portal 2 as objects approach it to warn the player that it will vaporize the object once they come into contact. Portals also cannot pass through the Grid.

The Emancipation Grid also causes the Handheld Portal Device to shake, signalling that it has "rebooted", and that any portals that have been placed have now been removed. This functions to give the player a clean slate upon starting a new test. It also prevents players from navigating the Aperture Science testing facilities quickly by using portals.

Appearance
Portal
In Portal, the Emancipation Grids appear as incandescent particle fields in many different locations.

Portal 2
In Portal 2, Emancipation Grids appear more solid in nature compared to Portal. They are light blue in coloring and have a shimmering water-like appearance. In the developer commentary, it was noted that they look this way to appear more "safe" to players, while still showing that there is a barrier to inanimate objects.
The Discouragement Redirection Cube was introduced in Portal 2. Its main purpose is to redirect the Thermal Discouragement Beam (a beam of electricity) into other directions and portals.
Portal 2: Lab Rat
Portal 2: Lab Rat is a graphic novel released in April of 2011. A joint project between Valve and established comic book artists, such as Michael Avon Oeming and Jay Pinkerton, the comic depicts the events between the end of Portal and the beginning of Portal 2.

Plot summary
The comic follows Doug Rattman, a lab worker at Aperture Science with a history of schizophrenia, who survives GLaDOS's attempt to murder every employee in the Aperture Science facility when she is first turned on. Sneaking through the facility, he watches from the shadows as Chell is tested by GLaDOS. Some words here, not sure what the hell he done at the end of the comic. The comic ends with the injured Ratmann crawling into a cryo-unit and putting himself to sleep.

The comic was released in two parts.
