Cores (also referred to as Spheres, Personality Cores/Spheres, or Aperture Science Artificial Personality Constructs) are machines designed to house advanced artificial intelligence, mostly unique for their ability to express emotions. Cores generally come in two varieties: Spherical and Input. Spheres are the standard form, used for android bodies (such as Atlas) and other purposes. Input Cores are eliptical Cores such as are used in Turrets or P-Body.

Each unique core is either integrated into a robotic body or left in standalone sphere form. (these spheres are usually attached to management rails) in the Aperture Science computer-aided Enrichment Center, such as the Turrets, Atlas, and P-body.

Function
Developed by Aperture Science technicians, GLaDOS is the earliest known personality core - specifically designed for becoming the Enrichment Center's overseer. The next cores developed were given the purpose of counteracting GLaDOS' psychotic behavior (such as flooding test chambers and other vital parts of the facility with neurotoxin) by integrating with her (sub)concious and altering her personality.

Often present in the form of spherical shapes, these cores are a more simplistic design as their purpose had been more at hand instead. This contrasts with the majority of the designs of Aperture androids in the Enrichment Center that are personality core-based such as Atlas (enclosed core design), P-body (core inputs), and Turrets (also core inputs).

{{spoiler|After the events of Portal, it became apparent that some of the unused (deactivated) cores kept in storage have been automatically reactivated by the facility to maintain the Enrichment Center. Under extreme circumstances/time, these cores have been unable to compensate, and have failed to do so. Some cores become corrupted (the cause of this is unknown).
Personality Cores
As the name implies, each core has its own unique personality and behavior, which can be incorporated into the central core when they are physically attached to it. However, most cores were unneeded and deactivated

Central Core
GLaDOS

The Central Core is the highest rank of all Aperture Science Personality Cores in the Enrichment Center, given to the core hardwired into the enormous robotic body in the Central Control Chamber.

A central core is has the power to control and regulate the entire Enrichment Center, including the camera feeds, Testing Chamber Assembly and Storage, and the Turret Production Lines.

GLaDOS, whom was designed with the sole purpose of being the central core herself; does possess a spherical shape like other personality cores.

Morality Core
The Morality Core is one of the more important cores attached on GLaDOS in Portal. It is a core with a purple 'eye' and two dots just beneath it.

Unlike other cores, the Morality Core is mute.

The second core attached to GLaDOS is the Curiosity Core. It is the core with an orange 'eye' and four dots beneath it. It has a tendency to constantly ask questions, ranging from its surroundings, to Chell, to where it is going.

GLaDOS' third core, the Cake Core, has a blue 'eye' with a huge pupil with six dots beneath it. It rambles on about an odd recipe for a rather unique kind of cake,

The last core attached to GLaDOS is the Anger Core. It has a red 'eye' with eight dots beneath it. It is also referred to as the Emotion Core. Rather than speak, the Core snarls and growls ferociously at Chell. (These snarls and growls were later used in Valve game 'Left 4 Dead'.)
The main character of the single-player campaign in Portal 2, Wheatley, also known as the Intelligence Dampening Sphere, is portrayed as bumbling, chatty, desperate when things did not catch up to his expectations, and often hesitant. He is the first character to have interacted with Chell in the game, and is one of many cores seen awakening at the end of Portal.

Corrupted Cores
Due to technical difficulties over time, a core may be detected as a Corrupted Core and would be subject to disposal. However, if the corrupted core is the central core, a substitute core must be present in a core receptacle in order to initiate a core transfer. Central Core Corruption will not be detected if another core is not present. This is because other cores would not usually be present, except for core transfer. Once a substitute core is found, both cores must agree or disagree to the core transfer procedure. If one agrees while the other disagrees, the transfer process cannot occur unless a Stalemate Resolution Associate is present in order to press the stalemate resolution button, which will initiate the core transfer process once the Associate has returned to the Central Chamber.

The Space Sphere is one of three active, corrupted cores. It speaks rapidly, and possesses an unhealthy obsession with space. Its key personality trait is its often-repeated desire to travel to outer space. The Final Hours of Portal 2 reveal Valve's inspiration for the Space Core: an Oregon Coast Aquarium ad with a goldfish rapidly and repeatedly humming, blurting, and stating that he would like to go to the aquarium, much like the Space Core does.
The Fact Sphere is the third corrupted core. It constantly states several random, twisted and not entirely true "facts" related to history, the current situation, as well as apparent facts about how amazing and handsome it is.
Trivia
* The bomb model used in Portal 2 is named 'personality_sphere_angry' within the game files, suggesting the Anger core was to make an appearance in the sequel.

* In early screenshots released prior to the Portal 2 E3 teaser trailer, the texture of personality cores were yet to receive detailing and minor scratches, as the textures of the plating were matte white. Since then the textures have been greatly improved, and compared to Portal, the Cores from then to the retail version have a wider range of emotions.

* Several unused textures for the personality cores with eyes colored similar to those of the Portal cores can be found in the Portal 2 game files, further hinting at a reappearance of the original cores.

* The bomb model also possesses various typical personality core animations that can be viewed in the Model Viewer in the Authoring Tools. These include a stationary animation, a test animation where the core aimlessly looks around, and an angry animation where it twitches violently.

Turrets serve as one of the main obstacles in the Portal series. Armed with unlimited ammunition and deadly accuracy, they will attempt to kill the player on sight.

Turrets are voiced by Ellen McLain.
Sentry Turret
Sentry Turrets appear as miniature tripod robots that appear in the Portal series. They are incapable of independent movement, but can open each side of their chassis (their 'arms') horizontally in order to reveal two gatling guns. The central part of the chassis holds their red 'eye', which emits a targeting laser. Almost all of the space within the turret is devoted to storing ammo.

When Turrets are unaware of the player's presence, they will maintain a standby state and will remain motionless with their guns retracted. Moving into their angle of sight however, will cause Turrets to deploy their guns with a voice line before opening fire. They will continue to fire until the player is dead or moves out of sight. If the latter occurs, Turrets will briefly search for the player (as indicated by the movement of the targeting laser), after which they will revert to a standby state.

Turrets can be avoided, disabled or destroyed in a number of ways. The most common method is knocking them over, causing them to flail and fire wildly before deactivating. This can be done by picking them up and dropping them, or using any object to push them. Additionally, the Thermal Discouragement Beam or Emancipation Grid can be used to completely destroy them. It should be noted that once a Turret has been knocked over and deactivated, restoring it to an upright position will reactivate it and the Turret will function normally once again.
The Rocket Turret is a unique enemy in Portal. It appears as a personality core outfitted with a rocket launcher. Upon activation, it will slowly lock onto Chell and emit a sound before launching a rocket. Rockets can also shatter glass.
Unlike normal Sentry Turrets, Defective Turrets have a more humorous and sarcastic dialogue, and speak in a masculine, less robotic voice.

They are harmless to Chell, many times making comments such as "If anyone asks, I killed you". Their voice lines seem to imply they are blind, but they are still aware of Chell's presence. They are first encountered in Chapter 5: The Escape.
Frankenturret
The Prima Donna Turret (literally First Woman in Italian, is the title given to the Lead Singer, the Diva, in an opera) is a bigger, wider turret that is featured at the end of Portal 2 in the turret choir, after GLaDOS let's Chell to the surface.

Apart from the ending, a Prima Donna Turret can also be found in Chapter 3, Test Chamber 11. There is a Prima Donna turret in the elevator at the end prior to the player entering the room. It can also be found below a Ratman den in Chapter 3 Test, Chamber 16, where it is observing a turret quartet.}}
Animal King Turret
The Animal King is a unique turret that is only referred to in an Aperture Science slideshow entired "Animal King Takeover" in Chapter 1: The Courtesy Call. The Turret is considerably larger than its Sentry Turret brethren, and appears to operate in exactly the same way. It can be distinguished from ordinary turrets by its immense size, crown and leopard skin-detailed chassis. In the context of the slideshow, the Animal King Turret is used as an example of an entity or organisation capable of taking control of Earth which "".

The Hover Turret is an unused Turret found within the game files of Portal 2. It emits a laser, similar to the other types of Turrets, that is coloured light-blue and able to burn the player similar to the burn of the Thermal Discouragement Beam, however unlike the Thermal Discouragement Beam it's laser does not provide a barrier for the player's movement, nor does it interact with game mechanics. The Hover Turret can be spawned within Portal 2 via the cheat command
ent_create npc_hover_turret
.
{{spoiler text|
Well here we are again
It's always such a pleasure
Remember when you tried
to kill me twice?

Oh how we laughed and laughed
Except I wasn't laughing
Under the circumstances
I've been shockingly nice

You want your freedom?
Take it
That's what I'm counting on
I used to want you dead
but
Now I only want you gone

She was a lot like you
(Maybe not quite as heavy)
Now little Caroline is in here too

One day they woke me up
So I could live forever
It's such a shame the same
will never happen to you

You've got your
short sad life left
That's what I'm counting on
I'll let you get right to it
Now I only want you gone

Goodbye my only friend
Oh, did you think I meant you?
That would be funny
if it weren't so sad

Well you have been replaced
I don't need anyone now
When I delete you maybe
I'll stop feeling so bad

Go make some new disaster
That's what I'm counting on
You're someone else's problem
