:Hey there. The reason I changed it was because I felt there wouldn't be enough content on the page to justify a whole article for the song. I think it's better served as a disambiguation page for the song and game of the same name. Hope that helps. <span style="font-family:Georgia;font-size:85%;">—Mussekateer·<span style="color:black;font-size:85%;">talk</span></span> 09:39, 1 August 2011 (UTC)
An unseen character in the single-player campaign of Portal 2, Caroline was the personal assistant to former Aperture Science CEO Cave Johnson, until later becoming his successor. Not much is known about her character, as she is only heard briefly through a small portion of Cave Johnson's prerecorded audio messages.

From the recordings, it is clear Cave Johnson holds her in high regard, remarking that "she's the backbone of this facility".

Caroline is voiced by Ellen McLain.

Overview
Her fate
{{spoiler|It is never made clear how much of GLaDOS was Caroline. The line "Now little Caroline is in here too" from the closing song "Want You Gone" suggests Caroline is still somewhere in GLaDOS' memory. :There are very high video-quality requirements for walkthroughs so not everyone can render them quite properly. In fact, since Portal and Portal 2 are relatively small games, I was hoping to do both, and yes, Portal as well. I just did Portal 2 first because more people are interested in a Portal 2 walkthrough than a Portal 1 right now, but once that is done I'll get on Portal 1.
How can I make walkthrough videos for Portal Test Chambers in Russian language?
Alexander 19:41, 29 July 2011 (UTC)
:If you mean Portal 1, then hold on, let them be created in English first. The Portal 2 videos, however, are almost done in English, so I'd start there.
:Now, there's a few ways to go about this:
* Either the walkthrough is a different version of the English one, with a Russian translators playing through the game and recording videos, same way as the English one
* Either the walkthrough uses the same demos as the English one. Then, I think that the voice files will be replaced by the Russian ones. This means that the video will be exactly the same, but with Russian voices. This will be consistent and be fully translated, but it comes with the limitations of having to use Source Recorder (which is hard for some parts of the game)
* Either the English walkthrough videos are subtitled in Russian. I am currently working on a way to do that automatically, using the game's Russian subtitles files. This way, it will be very easy to have a Russian walkthrough, and the voice will be in English with Russian subtitles. This method can also be used for other languages.
So, what do you prefer? — Wind 20:12, 29 July 2011 (UTC)
:I think the first way is better than other two. So video will be more like the game. The second way is rather hard. And voice lines may be replaced incorrectly. What about the third way? Hearing voice is certainly better than reading subtitles. But there's a very small disadvantage using the first or the second way. The voice that sounds in Russain language differs from original one. And some voice effects (changing voice, garbles) aren't shown.
:Alexander 21:04, 29 July 2011 (UTC)
::The thing with the first way is that it's the longest and hardest one, because it involves re-doing everything that was done for the English part of the wiki. You're free to do it if you want to, but I'd suggest gathering other people to help you along, because it is a very long task (took me months).
::In the meantime, I've been working on a subtitling tool (you can see it here) which will allow us to make captions for sections of the video, associate them with a sound file, and from that map it to other languages. So what can be done is to use the third way (english with russian subtitles), then as the real Russian walkthrough progresses, replace videos with it. Does that sound like a good plan? — Wind 23:58, 29 July 2011 (UTC)
:::Yes? It's good idea. I've recorded a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDayHXyy9xc . Is it good walkthrough video? Alexander 21:17, 30 July 2011 (UTC)
::::Keep in mind that someone who needs a walkthrough of Portal 1 more than 4 years after its release is likely to be a person very new to video games. Because of that, it is important to make the walkthrough easy to understand and follow; that is why, on the Portal 2 walkthrough, all the camera movements are very slow (it makes it easier to follow). To an experienced gamer, this style of movement does look slow, but that's okay. So, in other words: Move the mouse slowly.
::::Another thing is pacing: it is important to move kind of slowly and give an overview of each room you enter. This is for several reasons:
::::* It will be easier for someone to know which room you are in (since you look around the room)
::::* It will be easier to follow
::::* YouTube's thumbnails for a video are a choice between the image at 25% of the video, 50% of the video, or 75% of the video. If you take looks around the room as yu enter them, there is a higher chance that one of youtube's video thumbnails will be one of those moments, which will make a nice video thumbnail (Just a little bonus, hehe)
::::* For test chambers, make sure you stare at the information panel (where it says the test chamber number) for at least 3 seconds
::::Last but not least is graphics quality. First, make sure to record videos with a resolution of ratio 16:9 (1280x720 preferably, or 1920x1080 if you can). This will make sure that the video occupies the entire video player, instead of having those black bars on the left and the right like this video has. Also, you can try to record at a higher graphics quality if you can, so that it looks better. If you can't, that's okay, but most importantly make sure it still looks smooth.
::::Thanks, and good luck :3 — Wind 21:36, 30 July 2011 (UTC)
:::::Thank you for your comments. I'll try to do better.
:::::P.S. Uploading videos takes very much time. For exsample, this video (two minutes) was uploaded in two with a half hours.
:::::Alexander 22:06, 30 July 2011 (UTC)
::::::Yes indeed~ It takes me from 4 to 14 hours to upload a walkthrough video, depending on the length of the video D: Slow connection + big files = long time. Don't worry about it though, take your time. No rush~ — Wind 22:07, 30 July 2011 (UTC)
:::::I can't turn on 1280x720 resolution in the game. If 16:9 ratio resolution is needed I can enable only 856x480 or 848x480. Should I use again 1024x768 HD resolution or choose 856(or 848)x480 one? — Alexander 22:40, 30 July 2011 (UTC)
::::::That's a shame :( I guess your monitor doesn't go to 1280x720. Do you know anyone who has such a monitor, or do you have another monitor that you could plug into your computer for that? If not, then I guess 1024x768 would be the best choice, but not very good still >: — Wind 22:42, 30 July 2011 (UTC)
:::::No, I don't know anyone who can help me. Then I'll make not very good video. I hope less people will detect black bars. Also there is no black bar in fullscreen mode if watching people have NOT WIDESCREEN monitor. — Alexander 00:10, 31 July 2011 (UTC)
* All done using Source Recorder, rendered at 1920x1080 60 fps, with some exceptions detailed here: User:WindPower/WalkthroughNotes
* Graphics configuration here: :File:Portal 2 walkthrough config.cfg
Implementing TF2 Wiki-styled merchandise pricing

Slow-scan television.

In addition to images, the WAV files also contained brief messages in Morse Code, as well as a phone number and a username/password combination. It was eventually discovered that dialling the number using an analogue modem lead to a GLaDOS-themed Bulletin board system which, when accessed using the aforementioned username and password, revealed more images and other data that hinted that Portal 2 was forthcoming.

On March 3, another patch was released that changed the ending of Portal, and this was considered confirmation that Portal 2 would soon be released. On March 5, three days after the commencement of the ARG, the sequel was officially announced.

Sa tentative pour se soigner est un échec et avec aussi ses espoirs de guérison, il ordonne alos à ses ingénieurs de commencer à faire des recherches sur l' (IA) et la brain mapping dans l'espoir que son esprit pourra être téléchargé dans un ordinateur. Cave a aussi dit que "Ça fait trente ans qu'on aurait dû se concentrer [dessus]". De peur qu'il meure avant la mise au point de cette technologie, il laissa des instructions que sa secrétaire, Caroline, prenne la tête de Aperture Science. Il disait qu'il savait que "Elle va rechigner. C'est son genre", poursuivant en précisant "Je ne veux pas le savoir, forcez-lui la main". On peut donc présumer que Caroline fût sélectionné pour sa dévotion au progrès scientifique, un trait de caractère admiré par Cave, ainsi que sa relation privilégiée avec le Fondateur d'Aperture. Il est inconnu de ce qu'est devenu Cave, mais on pense qu'il est décédé victime des suites de sa maladie en stade terminal, pour la science.}}
* Dans les première étapes du développement, Cave Johnson devait être l'acolyte du joueur, sous la forme d'un IA. == Historie ==

Cave Johnson is the founder of Aperture Science, which evolved from its precursor, Aperture Fixtures and later Aperture Science Innovators. Cave Johnson first appeared by initials in one of the during Portal, and was fleshed out and provided with additional details during the Portal ARG.

In Portal 2, Cave Johnson became a prominent character through a variety of automated audio recordings from the late 1940s to as late as sometime in the 1980s.

Cave Johnson is voiced by American actor J. K. Simmons.

History
Shower curtains
In 1953, Cave Johnson created Aperture Fixtures, a shower curtain manufacturer. The precursor to Aperture Science, he selected the name because it 'makes the curtains sound more hygienic'. He became a billionaire after winning contracts to manufacture shower curtains for all branches of the U.S. Military except the Navy.

Aperture Science Innovators
During his career in science, he called upon the wealthy and powerful to join his cause for the future of science. He also employed top scientists and other staff who were dedicated to the field, such as Caroline, and those lacking common sense for the dangers inherent in scientific experimentation.

Aperture
At the time of its creation, Aperture Science Innovations had developed the Aperture Science Portable Quantum Tunneling Device, a prototype to the modern Handheld Portal Device Chell wields.

Aperture Laboratories
Aperture Science
At some point during the 1980s, Cave Johnson had renamed the company to Aperture Laboratories, a name that would be known far into the future. However, the number of willing test subjects had dwindled over the years, and out of desperation, employees and random strangers were pulled off the streets in order to be a part of the testing. The technology had advanced greatly, and robots had started to replace human employees. These employees then become unfortunate victims in Cave's quest for the future of science.

{{spoiler text|During his final days, Cave stated that he had tried to purchase a number of "moon rocks". However, his last few recordings indicated that these acquired "moon rocks" were toxic, and resulted in a fatal illness. He explained that he contracted the illness when, in one of his wild ideas, he was grinding moon rocks together in the name of science in order to form a new type of substance called the 'Conversion Gel', most likely named due to its ability to serve as a portal conductor and allow portals to be placed on any surface. As the symptoms of his terminal illness became more severe however, he decided to re-purpose the 'conversion gel' to create new portals that would hopefully leech the poison out of his system.

As his illness progressed, Cave's emotional state, already precarious due to the success of his rival Black Mesa, began to deteriorate. It was at this point that Cave mentioned the aphorism "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade". As his condition became more debilitating, Cave's comments became increasingly emphatic, resulting in advice to never give up, "get mad," and "make life take the lemons back!". Despite his attempts to stave off fate, all attempts to cure his affliction failed, and with little hope of a cure, he instructed his engineers to start research on artificial intelligence (AI) and brain mapping in the hope that his brain could be downloaded into a computer. Cave also stated that they "should've been doing this 30 years ago". Fearing that he would die before the release of the technology, he left instructions that his secretary Caroline should take charge of Aperture Science, and that she should be downloaded into the computer intended for him. He stated that he knows that "she will decline at first or feel she can't do it", which he followed up with "force her to do it if you have to". It is presumed that Caroline was selected due to her devotion to scientific progress, a trait admired by Cave, and also due to their close relationship. It is unknown what became of Cave himself, but it is presumed that he fell victim to his illness and, ultimately, to science.}}
Trivia
* During early stage of development, Cave Johnson was planned to be the player's sidekick, taking the form of an AI. Cave would confront the player for their "committed crimes against their brothers-in-arms" and become the game's main antagonist.
**

The Portal ARG, or Alternate Reality Game, was introduced as an easter egg in the March 1 Patch. The notes released along with the patch read "Changed radio transmission frequency to comply with federal and state spectrum management regulations", and accompanying this was a new achievement, "Transmission Received".

In order to acquire the achievement, players were required to collect a Radio in each test chamber, and carry it to a specific location. The red light on the radio would change to green when the correct location was reached, after which the default music would change to a series of beeps, similar to Morse Code. If a player carried the radio through a Material Emancipation Grill, a different sound would play. It was later discovered these sounds, stored in 26 separate WAV files, contained hidden images that could only be accessed by using Slow-scan television software.

The Puzzle Creator (also known as Puzzle Maker or Editor) is a Portal 2 feature released on May 8th, 2012, allowing the creation of single-player test chambers within an in-game map editor. The Puzzle Creator was first mentioned within The Final Hours of Portal 2, "[An in-game level browser won't be of much use unless] Valve figures out how to make designing Portal 2 maps an easier process. The Puzzle Creator does not have a single official name; Valve published a blog post on the October 27, 2011 referring to the editor as the "Puzzle Creator", later referred to it on the blog post of April 27, 2012 as "Puzzle Maker" and simply call it "Editor" in-game.
Portal 2 is the sequel to the award winning and hugely successful Portal developed by Valve Corporation. It features a single-player story set after the events of Portals story; and a brand-new Co-op game mode, featuring additional test chambers designed specifically for Co-operative play. Portal 2 was released April 19, 2011 on the Steam platform. North America got retail release on the April 19, 2011; Europe and Australia, April 21, 2011.

Plot
Story
