The Victory Lift is game mechanic introduced Portal, and also makes frequent appearances in Portal 2. The Victory Lift is a simple platform that rises when it is activated by the player.

Function
The primary function of the Victory Lift is to allow the player access to areas that would otherwise be inaccessible. Victory Lifts are traditionally activated when the corresponding Button is activated by the player, and will rise when the player stands on them. Some Victory Lifts do not require the player to activate them, and these platforms are usually activated upon completion of a Test Chamber. Victory Lifts will usually (but not always) descend when a player has disembarked the lift.
:: It should be "Valve". The uppercase version with the smaller sized "E" is just a logo, nothing more. I see things like "VALVe" and such being written entirely too often elsewhere.
:: 2) The yellow tint color for the background of the box tables looks strange. Yellow, no matter how desaturated, isn't really in the color scheme of Portal (ignoring instances such as the yellow portal for the co-op partner and other instances). Overall it's grays, blues, blacks. Clean colors. Each level within the Portal series consists of surfaces. Typically, a portal can be placed upon any light-colored flat surface, whereas an uneven or dark surface cannot be used in this way. Similarly, the dark metal panels present in Portal 's Test Chambers are present for the express purpose of requiring the player to consider other techniques in order to solve the puzzle(s). In this way, the placement and location of portal-conductive surfaces is a fundamental design choice, and determines the way in which the puzzle(s) need to be solved.

In some Test Chambers, surfaces are blocked by doors or other obstacles, or must be activated before a portal can be placed upon them. In Portal 2, the only way to overcome some puzzles that lack portal-conductive surfaces is through the use of Gels.

Gels
Introduced in Portal 2, Gels can be applied on any surface in order to modify its attributes.

* Repulsion Gel is a blue gel that bounces a player or object away from the surface.
* Propulsion Gel is an orange gel that accelerates objects touching it, allowing players to run forward at high speeds.
* Conversion Gel is a white gel that allows portals to be placed on surfaces that portals normally cannot be placed.

The High Energy Pellet is a puzzle mechanic introduced in Portal. It is a fast moving energy ball, fired by an emitter built into a Test Chamber surface and usually accompanied by a receptacle that catches it. Players direct the ball into the receptacle in order to activate lifts or devices before it dissipates and explodes. The ball is extremely volatile, and as such instantly vaporizes Chell on contact. Turrets, however, will be knocked over by it.
Cave Johnson is the founder of Aperture Science, which evolved from its precursor, Aperture Science Innovators. Cave Johnson first appeared by name as a reference in a in Portal, and was fleshed out and provided with additional details during the Portal ARG. In Portal 2, Cave Johnson became a prominent character and communicates with the player through a variety of automated audio recordings.

Cave Johnson is voiced by American actor J. K. Simmons.

History
Shower curtains
In 1953, Cave Johnson created Aperture Fixtures, a shower curtain manufacturer. The precursor to Aperture Science, he selected the name because it 'makes the curtains sound more hygienic'. He became a billionaire after winning contracts to manufacture shower curtains for the U.S. Military.

Aperture Science Innovators
During his career in science, he called upon the wealthy and powerful to join his cause for the future of science. He also employed top scientists and other staff who were dedicated to the field, such as Caroline, and those lacking common sense for the dangers inherent in scientific experimentation.

Aperture
At the time of its creation, Aperture Science Innovations had developed the Aperture Science Portable Quantum Tunneling Device, a prototype to the modern Handheld Portal Device Chell wields.

Aperture Laboratories
Aperture Science
At some point during the 1980s, Cave Johnson had renamed the company to Aperture Laboratories, a name that would be known far into the future. However, the number of willing test subjects had dwindled over the years, and out of desperation, employees and random strangers were pulled off the streets in order to be a part of the testing. The technology had advanced greatly, and robots had started to replace human employees. These employees then become unfortunate victims in Cave's quest for the future of science.

{{spoiler text|During his final days, Cave stated that he had tried to purchase a number of "moon rocks". However, his last few recordings indicated that these acquired "moon rocks" were toxic, and resulted in a fatal illness. He explained that he contracted the illness when, in one of his wild ideas, he was grinding moon rocks together in the name of science in order to form a new type of substance called the 'Conversion Gel', most likely named due to its ability to serve as a portal conductor and allow portals to be placed on any surface. As the symptoms of his terminal illness became more severe however, he decided to re-purpose the 'conversion gel' to create new portals that would hopefully leech the poison out of his system.

His attempts to cure his affliction failed, and with little hope of a cure, he instructed his engineers to start research on artificial intelligence (AI) and brain mapping in the hope that his brain could be downloaded into a computer. Cave also stated that they "should've been doing this 30 years ago". Fearing that he would die before the release of the technology, he left instructions that his secretary Caroline should take charge of Aperture Science. He stated that he knows that "she will decline at first or feel she can't do it", which he followed up with "force her to do it if you have to". It is presumed that Caroline was selected due to her devotion scientific progress, a trait admired by Cave, and also due to her close relationship with Aperture's founder. It is unknown what became of Cave himself, but it is presumed that he fell victim to his illness and, ultimately, to science.}}
In one of them, there are several pictures of a suited man with a small picture of a Companion Cube over his face, along with the words "Our Founder" found in one of the photos. {{spoiler text|Below the mad scribblings of Rattmann is what appears to be a login name and password labeled "cjohnson", with the password "tier3", alluding to Cave Johnson himself. == Trivia ==
* During early stage of development, Cave Johnson was planned to be the player's sidekick, taking the form of an AI. As the story progressed, he would lose his touch with humanity and eventually try to become a full robot, leading to a robot uprising. Cave would confront the player for their "committed crimes against their brothers-in-arms" and become the game's main antagonist.
Central Core
The Central Core is hard-wired into the mainframe of Aperture Laboratories, and is provided with the power to control and regulate the entire Facility. The central core is capable of overseeing all of the events that occur within monitored areas of the Facility, creating and stockpiling test chambers, constructing and dispensing Turrets, and activating core functions among other things. Unlike the personality cores, the central core does not need to possess a spherical shape, but must remain uncorrupted and stable at all times lest it be replaced by an Stalemate Resolution Associate.
The Intelligence Dampening Sphere, also known as Wheatley, was specifically designed by Aperture Science scientists in order to make GLaDOS less dangerous by generating an endless stream of stupid ideas to distract her. It was thought that this would prevent her from killing the scientists when activated and improve the operation of the Facility. According to GLaDOS, the Intelligence Dampening Sphere is "the product of the greatest minds of a generation working together with the express purpose of building the dumbest moron who ever lived".
Corrupted Cores
Due to technical difficulties over time, a core may be automatically labeled as a Corrupted Core and would be subject to disposal. However, if the corrupted core is the central core, a substitute core must be present in a core receptacle in order to initiate a core transfer. Once a substitute core is found, both cores must agree or disagree to the core transfer procedure. If one agrees while the other disagrees, the transfer process cannot occur unless a Stalemate Resolution Associate is present in order to press the stalemate resolution button, which will initiate the core transfer process once the Associate has returned to the core transfer bay.
