The &#039;&#039;&#039;Thermal Discouragement Beam&#039;&#039;&#039; (referred by [[GLaDOS]] as &amp;quot;&#039;&#039;&#039;deadly laser&#039;&#039;&#039;,&amp;quot;) is a test chamber mechanic introduced in &#039;&#039;[[Portal 2]]&#039;&#039;.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The beam is fired in a straight line from an immovable device built into the wall or ceiling of a test chamber. The device will be coupled with a single receptacle (or multiple) placed in a different location. Directing the beam into the recepticle will activate certain mechanics that are crucial in reaching the chamber exit. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Thermal Discouragement Beams can be angled in certain directions with the use of the [[Discouragement Redirection Cube]] and [[portals]]. Additionally, the beam holds the ability to travel through transparent objects such as glass. It can also be used to destroy turrets that block the player&#039;s access. Touching the beam will push the player away, as well as deal a small amount of damage. Prolonged exposure will result in the players death, but since the beam pushes the player away it is very difficult to kill oneself with the beam.&lt;br /&gt;

An &#039;&#039;&#039;Excursion Funnel&#039;&#039;&#039; is a new type of technology introduced in &#039;&#039;Portal 2&#039;&#039;. This mechanism creates a funnel of energy in which the player may enter and exit at any time. It seems to defy the laws of gravity, allowing any who enter to become weightless and travel along the path of the funnel. Anyone, or anything, caught inside the funnel cannot go backwards willingly, and must rely on the Excursion Funnel reversing, generally through use of a [[Heavy Duty Super-Colliding Super Button|button]].&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Excursion Funnels can act through portals and therefore can be used to solve puzzles where the funnels may seem not useful on first glance to the solving of a test. If a Excursion Funnel is reversed then it is possible for objects to go through portals in which the funnel is acting through.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The funnel can also act as a mode of transportation for objects across large gaps, as well as [[gels]]. Gels caught in the Excursion Funnel are slowly forced along a path until it collides with a wall or the funnel suddenly disappears, making it excellent for covering large areas in a short amount of time. [[Turrets]] coated in [[Repulsion Gel]] are instantly thrown into the air, bouncing helplessly until they shutdown.&lt;br /&gt;
