The Portal ARG, or Alternate Reality Game, was introduced as an easter egg in the March 1 Patch. The notes released along with the patch read "Changed radio transmission frequency to comply with federal and state spectrum management regulations", and accompanying this was a new achievement, "Transmission Received".

In order to acquire the achievement, players were required to collect a Radio in each test chamber, and carry it to a specific location. The red light on the radio would change to green when the correct location was reached, after which the default music would change to a series of beeps, similar to Morse Code. If a player carried the radio through a Material Emancipation Grill, a different sound would play. It was later discovered these sounds, stored in 26 separate WAV files, contained hidden images that could only be accessed by using Slow-scan television software.

In addition to images, the WAV files also contained brief messages in Morse Code, as well as a phone number and a username/password combination. It was eventually discovered that dialling the number using an analogue modem lead to a GLaDOS-themed Bulletin board system which, when accessed using the aforementioned username and password, revealed more images and other data that hinted that Portal 2 was forthcoming.

On March 3, another patch was released that changed the ending of Portal, and this was considered confirmation that Portal 2 would soon be released. On March 5, three days after the commencement of the ARG, the sequel was officially announced.

Portals are the feature gameplay mechanic of the Portal series. Portals are placed by firing the Handheld Portal Device, and work in pairs thereby allowing two-way movement through each portal. A player can place blue and orange portals in the singleplayer campaign, however in Co-op mode each robot possesses its own portal colours in order to differentiate them. Atlas can create purple and cyan portals, and P-body can create red and yellow portals. Lone portals appear as a solid-coloured oval, and paired portals appear as a colour-bordered oval - with the "center" being a window to the other portal. Portals are capable of maintaining the mass and velocity of any object that passes through one portal and exits out the other. Portals are also capable of maintaining the flow of light and gravity, specifically Excursion Funnels and Light Bridges.

Beta Portals
The portals have had several changes in design before the release of Portal, as is evident in some trailers and screenshots. Additionally, the Orange portal used to be Red, like P-Body's secondary-fire portal in Portal 2.

Bugs
* Portal boosting: A player is able to boost their momentum when traveling through two portals placed on the floor by using their primary or secondary fire key as they exit the primary or secondary portal, respectively. This is caused by the Portal mechanic pushing the player away from a portal if the portal is re-placed somewhere else (or in this case, in the same place.)
The Emergency Intelligence Incinerator is a chute that leads directly to a series of furnaces deep within the Aperture Science Facility. Incinerators appear infrequently, but appear in specific locations during both Portal and Portal 2. Incinerators play a key role during Portal and appear only twice, and also appear briefly in Portal 2 early on in the game.

Function
The purpose of the Incinerator is to safely and efficiency dispose of Aperture Science technology by providing easy access to the furnaces. {{spoiler text|In Portal, the player is forced to incinerate their Companion Cube in order to progress to the next test.
Trivia
* During Portal 2, a ruined Emergency Intelligence Incinerator can be spotted inside GLaDOS' old chamber, .
