'''Aperture Science''' is a scientific research company founded by [[Cave Johnson]]. ''Portal'' and ''Portal 2'' take place in Aperture Science's Enrichment Center, which is dedicated to endlessly testing the Aperture Science products and the humans that use them.

Aperture Science was founded as Aperture Fixtures in the early 1940s by Cave Johnson. Aperture Fixtures was primarily dedicated to the manufacture and distribution of shower curtains {{N}} a low-tech portal between the inside and outside of a shower {{N}} with Cave Johnson winning the "Shower Curtain Salesman of 1943" award. In 1943 the company's name was changed to "Aperture Science Innovators". While this was initially done to make their shower curtains sound more hygienic, the company's focus would indeed soon shift to actual science. Cave Johnson purchased a large, abandoned salt mine in Upper Michigan in which Aperture Science's Enrichment Center would be built; however, there was at least one alternate location in Cleveland, Ohio.{{Cit}}

Throughout the late 1940s and the 1950s, Aperture Science would begin its comprehensive testing and research practices. All of this was not done legally, going by the posters telling workers to alarm if they were to see any sort of journalist, police or workplace controlant. The best possible test subjects, the likes of Olympians, astronauts and war heroes were first chosen. They were also the second largest contractor after [[hl2:Black Mesa|Black Mesa]] for the Department of Defense from 1952 to 1954. Aperture's developments in this period included [[Gels#Repulsion Gel|Repulsion Gel]], the [[Weighted Storage Cube]], the [[Heavy Duty Super-Colliding Super Button|1500 Megawatt Super Colliding Super Button]] and the [[Handheld Portal Device|Aperture Science Portable Quantum Tunneling Device]], an early and significantly larger version of the modern Portal Gun.

In 1968, Cave Johnson attending court hearings regarding Aperture Science's involvement with the disappearances of astronauts, likely due to many of them not returning from testing.

By the 1970s, Aperture Science was financially unstable. The Olympians, astronauts and war heroes that were used as test subjects were replaced with vagrants who were paid $60 for their time. Aperture Science would continue its research and created [[Gels#Propulsion Gel|Propulsion Gel]].

In the 1980s, test participation became mandatory for all staff, raising the quality of the test subjects, but diminishing employee retention. Aperture's financial problems were severe at this time, but development continued. Moon rocks were used to create [[Gels#Conversion Gel|Conversion Gel]], an efficient portal conductor. {{Spoiler text|Cave Johnson would also be poisoned by his experiments with moon rocks and become deathly ill. As his health degraded he delegated his leadership to his assistant [[Caroline]], asking that her consciousness be placed in a computer. Testing continued with the hope that passing through portals repeatedly might somehow cure Cave Johnson of his illness}}. Aperture Science also began development of its [[GLaDOS|Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System]], an artificial intelligence which would be used to oversee scientific testing.

In 1998, GLaDOS was brought online for the first time during Aperture Science's annual bring-your-daughter-to-work-day. GLaDOS instantly became self-aware and homicidal. GLaDOS flooded the enrichment center with a deadly neurotoxin, killing most of the scientists. Aperture Science was effectively shut down and placed into a permanent testing cycle by GLaDOS.

* Aperture created a ship known as the Borealis, which used a long range portal gun. The Borealis is mentioned several times in the Half-Life series, and the dock it was held at can be found in Portal 2, upon which you unlock an achievement.

==Overview==
The Handheld Portal Device is designed to create and place portals on any white [[surface]] that is immobile, flat and large enough. When the device is fired, a colored projectile will be emitted from the barrel. If the projectile strikes a valid surface, a portal of the corresponding color will be formed. If a portal of the other color is already placed, these two portals will be linked. If a portal of the same color is already placed, it will be closed and the new one will be used instead, limiting the player to the use of only two portals at a time. Nothing will happen if a portal is shot at an enemy or other object. The glass chamber and a light on the top of the device will glow with the color of the previously placed portal.

The Handheld Portal Device also has the ability to pick up and manipulate objects directly in front of it in the same manner as the [[hl2:Gravity Gun|Gravity Gun]] from the ''Half-Life'' series. While holding an object, the primary fire function will push the object forward ''very'' slightly, while secondary fire will drop the object.

==Portal 2==
The Handheld Portal Device in ''[[Portal 2]]'' behaves somewhat differently to its ''Portal'' counterpart. The key differences include new object handling sounds and animations, new sounds for firing portals and faster placement of portals by default. In addition, the Portal Device supports new animations and particle effects for moving portals and stretching objects<ref>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LaezAuXCcwE</ref>; while it is possible to enable free rotation of objects via the use of a [[List of useful console commands|console command]], the remaining functionality is only accessible through the use of a {{w|Sixense TrueMotion|Razer Hydra}} controller, which allows for the greater degree of control of objects. == Plot summary ==
The comic follows [[Doug Rattmann]], a lab worker at [[Aperture Science]] with a history of {{W|schizophrenia}}, who survives [[GLaDOS]]'s attempt to murder every employee in the Aperture Science facility when she is first turned on. Sneaking through the facility, he watches from the shadows as [[Chell]] is tested by GLaDOS. Following several flashbacks of Rattmann's employment at Aperture Science, he witnesses firsthand the ending events of ''Portal.'' After Chell is abducted by the [[Party Escort Bot]], he delves back into the crumbling complex in an attempt to rescue her. Upon finding Chell, he is unable to release her from her solitary confinement and, noticing that power systems are beginning to fail, he patches her chamber into a reserve grid, saving her life while at the same time trapping her for an unknown period of time. The comic ends with the injured Rattmann crawling into a cryo-unit and putting himself to sleep.

== Trivia ==
* On page 7, a book titled ''"Art Therapy - The Bennet Way"'' can be seen during the explosion, explaining why Doug Rattman is creating murals throughout the Aperture facility. He uses art as an an attempt to help his schizophrenia. "Art Therapy" is the name of the co-op DLC later added to Portal 2.
* On page 8, there is a message in binary at the bottom of Chell's Application form. When converted to {{W|ASCII}} it reads, "The cake is a lie."
* {{Spoiler|On Page 10, Rattman's statment that "he would rather have gone to the moon" is foreshadowing of the ending of Portal 2.}}
* On page 13 of the comic, the Gravity Gun and Combine Health Dispenser from ''Half-Life 2'', and the Black Mesa Health Station and H.E.V. Suit Charger from ''Half-Life'' make a cameo appearance.
* In one of Rattmann's lines on page 25, he says "Both alive and dead, until someone opens the box". This is a reference to {{W|Schrodinger's Cat}}, a popular scientific theory involving a cat sealed inside a box.
