The Cooperative Testing Initiative, or Co-op for short, is the separate game mode where two players can join up and take part in test chambers built specifically for cooperative play. The players take the form of either Atlas, the short and blue bot, or P-body, the tall and orange bot. Each bot comes equipped with their own Handheld Portal Device with separate portal colors. The portals are capable of maintaining the flow of things, even if it enters a partner's portal, which is essential during some test chambers.

There are five test courses, each with several testing chambers within, which will test both players' ability to solve the different puzzles as they progress. Each chamber becomes much harder than the last, with the final test taking place outside of the official Aperture testing facilities. In these tests, the players are then put to the test, so to speak, and must use every bit of knowledge earned about the previous tests in the final one. The last chambers of each course, excluding the fifth, the players are told to go out and locate a certain disk for the DVD player found at the end of the course. Once found and inserted within the device, the players are given a few lines from GLaDOS before exploding violently. This is the only means of getting out of the test chamber. Upon completion, players are then returned to the Hub.

During the testing, GLaDOS will periodically chime in and say a few choice words, either to bemoan the players' progress or point out their tiny flaws. She even goes beyond to try and break their partnership by pointing fingers at one or the other. If the player stands within range of one of GLaDOS' monitoring cameras and perform a gesture, it will elicit a response from GLaDOS, depending on the gesture performed. Players do not have to fear death while testing, as it's commonplace in the machine world. If a player dies, the other player will be given an indication that the other has died and where they died. The dead player will then respawn moments later from the chute the Reassembly Machine sends them through, ready for a second try. The players have an infinite amount of lives, and GLaDOS will comment on every death that occurs with dry humor or irritability. As players progress, they will cross checkpoints that lead into the next part of the test chamber. The checkpoints will allow players who die to respawn at the checkpoint for shorter travel time to the next testing chamber.

Courses
Course One: Team Building
This is one of the first courses available to the player upon entering the Hub, the others remaining locked until the other courses are completed. In this course, the players are given basic tests that emphasize the use of teamwork through portals and pinging, which is a function that allows players to communicate even without text or even through voice. Pings come in a variety of forms, from a simple "Look" ping, to a "Timer" ping that can be used to coordinate timed events effectively.

Course Two: Mass and Velocity
After completing Course One, this course will unlock for players to continue testing. This chamber utilizes the effects portals have when an object has both mass and velocity as it enters the portal, meaning the players must utilize both in order to pass this course.

Course Three: Hard-Light Surfaces
This course opens up upon completion of Course Two. In this course, the players must make use of the Light Bridges to both navigate chambers and act as a wall for other chambers as a defense mechanism or a creative way of stopping something from hurtling into a water hazard.

Course Four: Excursion Funnels
This course unlocks upon completion of Course Three. During this course, the player will have to make use of both Light Bridges and Excursion Funnels in order to complete these chambers. It will employ elements from the previous courses as well, making it much more difficult as the players progress.

Course Five: Mobility Gels
This is the final course that unlocks after the completion of Course Four. Upon entering, GLaDOS will chime in the explain the purpose of the testing and what their true purpose is. The players are then dropped into the defunct Aperture testing spheres encountered during single player, and must make use of all elements from the previous chambers along with the Gels that are found in the course. The final course is very difficult, requiring both players to act as a true team.

Course Six: Advanced Chambers
There is evidence within the game's localisation files that there was a sixth course of Co-op chambers during Portal 2's development: Advanced Chambers. Valve has said that in an upcoming DLC, advanced Test Chambers will be introduced to both Single player and Co-op play of Portal 2. There is no known information why these chambers were not available at the launch of Portal 2.

The Portal storyline is home to a number of richly detailed characters.

Characters
Characters are listed in order of appearance.

Chell
Chell
Chell is the main protagonist and the character you control during the single player portions of both Portal and Portal 2. She is notoriously tenacious, and is renowned for possessing a "never give up" or "never say die" attitude as highlighted in the Portal: Lab Rat comic. Throughout both games she doesn't speak, but interacts silently with the world around her.

GLaDOS
GLaDOS
GLaDOS (or Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System) is the primary antagonist throughout both Portal and Portal 2. She is a sentient computer that was built to help oversee, and later fully control all aspects of the Aperture Science Enrichment Center. Witty and sarcastic, her tone and mode of speech is generally surprisingly human, but with the cold calculating precision only a computer can afford.

Doug Rattmann
Doug Rattmann
Doug Rattmann is an ex-Aperture Science employee who has gone somewhat insane by lack of medication. He now roams the Aperture facility, setting up dens as he travels

Weighted Companion Cube
Weighted Companion Cube
The Weighted Companion Cube is a variant of the Weighted Storage Cube. It is presented to the player in a late test chamber in Portal, and serves as both protector and assistant throughout the level. In the sequel, the Companion Cube has been upgraded, like much of Aperture Science's equipment, most notably with the addition of soft music which plays whenever it is held.

Wheatley
Wheatley
Wheatley is a sentient personality core that has helped to maintain Aperture Science. He begins Portal 2 as your companion and guide through the early parts of the game, and attempts to help the player escape from GLaDOS.

Cave Johnson
Cave Johnson
At some point in his career as a successful shower curtain salesman, and after winning the Idaho award for potato science, Cave Johnson decided to embark upon a venture into science. He then bought a large salt mine to base all of his scientific testing. As a result, he founded and developed Aperture Science Innovations, a testing ground for inventions of a scientific nature. Now presumed deceased, recordings of his voice remain in order to guide test subjects through the many test chambers that can be found throughout Aperture Science.

Caroline
Caroline
Caroline was Cave Johnson's assistant.

Atlas
Atlas
Atlas is a sentient robot designed by GLaDOS from the remains of a knowledge core for the purposes of cooperative testing with his partner P-body. His eye, and markings on his body are blue, while he fires blue and purple portals from his Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device. Though incapable of human speech, he is presented as a somewhat nervous masculine robot.

P-body
P-body
P-body is a sentient robot designed by GLaDOS from the remains of a turret for the purposes of cooperative testing with her partner Atlas. "Her" eye, and markings on her body are orange, while she fires orange and red portals from her Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device. Though incapable of human speech, P-body is presented as inquisitive and confident, though slightly feminine robot.

Announcer
Announcer
The Announcer guides the player through the facility early on in Portal 2 .
GLaDOS' third core, the Intelligence Core (also known as the Logic Core), has a blue 'eye' with a huge pupil with six dots beneath it. The last core attached to GLaDOS is the Anger Core. It has a red 'eye' with eight dots beneath it. It is also referred to as the Emotion Core. Rather than speak, the Core snarls and growls ferociously at Chell.
Central Core
The Central Core is hard-wired into the mainframe of Aperture Laboratories, and is provided with the power to control and regulate the entire Facility. The central core is capable of overseeing all of the events that occur within monitored areas of the Facility, creating and stockpiling test chambers, constructing and dispensing Turrets, and activating core functions among other things. Unlike the personality cores, the central core does not need to possess a spherical shape, but must remain uncorrupted and stable at all times lest it be replaced by a Stalemate Resolution Associate.
The Intelligence Dampening Sphere, also known as Wheatley, was specifically designed by Aperture Science scientists in order to make GLaDOS less dangerous by generating an endless stream of stupid ideas to distract her. It was thought that this would prevent her from killing the scientists when activated and improve the operation of the Facility. According to GLaDOS, the Intelligence Dampening Sphere is "the product of the greatest minds of a generation working together with the express purpose of building the dumbest moron who ever lived".
Corrupted Cores
Due to technical difficulties over time, a core may be automatically labeled as a Corrupted Core and would be subject to disposal. However, if the corrupted core is the central core, a substitute core must be present in a core receptacle in order to initiate a core transfer. Once a substitute core is found, both cores must agree or disagree to the core transfer procedure. If one agrees while the other disagrees, the transfer process cannot occur unless a Stalemate Resolution Associate is present in order to press the stalemate resolution button, which will initiate the core transfer process once the Associate has returned to the core transfer bay.

The Space Sphere is one of three active, corrupted cores. It speaks rapidly, and possesses an unhealthy obsession with space. Its key personality trait is its often-repeated desire to travel to outer space.
The Fact Sphere is the third corrupted core. It constantly states several random, twisted and not entirely true "facts" related to history, the current situation, as well as apparent facts about how right and handsome it is.
Trivia
* The bomb model used in Portal 2 is named 'personality_sphere_angry' in the game files, suggesting the Anger core was going to make an appearance in the sequel.
* Several textures for the personality cores with eyes colored like those of the Portal cores can be found in the Portal 2 game files, further hinting at a reappearance of the original cores.
*The bomb model also has animations that can be viewed in, for example, hammer's model viewer. These include a stationary animation, a test animation where the core aimlessly looks around and an angry animation where it twitches violently.
