Portal: Prelude is an unofficial prequel to the game Portal, developed by an independent team of three. The game features a brand new storyline focusing on the pre-GLaDOS era of Aperture Science where test subjects are monitored by employees of the facility. The game spans across 8 chapters covering 19 test chambers which follow a gradual learning curve similar to that of Portal. In addition, 16 challenge maps and 6 advanced test chambers are included with the mod.

Many gameplay elements from Portal make a return in Prelude, while entirely new gameplay devices were created exclusively for the mod, such as localised gravitational fields. Portal: Prelude also features over 400 lines of text to speech, with English, French and German subtitles.

Synopsis
{{Spoiler|block=yes|Portal: Prelude opens up on much the same manner as Portal, with the player, Abby, waking up from a brief detention in a Relaxation Vault. The player is greeted by Mike, an overseer of the Enrichment Center, and another employee named Erik.
Shortly thereafter, the player receives a Handheld Portal Device. However, this Portal Gun is not fully upgraded, and, unlike in Portal and Portal 2, can only shoot orange portals.
After the player proceeds through a number of tests, he or she receives a Dual Portal Device.
The player proceeds through more test chambers, encountering new people and gameplay mechanics, such as Peter and Localised Gravitational Fields. The Weighted Companion Cube also makes an appearance, though like in Portal the player must euthanize it at the end of the chamber.
After the player completes the final chamber, they return their device and proceed to their party. However, the party must be delayed because of the activation of GLaDOS. The player gets to watch the activation of GLaDOS. However, its Morality Core was not installed, and so she kills most of the employees in the room. Mike shuts the whole system down, but the auxiliary power will turn on in a few minutes, so the player must quickly find the morality core and install it on GLaDOS.
The player finds a new Portal Gun, and proceeds to find the Morality Core. However, by the time they get back to GLaDOS's room, she has already awoken and has started filling the facility with neurotoxin. After evading GLaDOS's traps, the player finally manages to install the Morality Core. However, their effort is in vain, and she continues the attack, she grabs Abby with the anti-gravity force and slams her into a wall, knocking her unconscious and almost killing her.
Abby then briefly wakes up to see a scientist trying to reason with GLaDOS, but is immediately killed with a laser just before she floods the room with neurotoxin. Succumbing to the neurotoxin, Abby blacks out, and awakens to being dragged out of the chamber by a female Aperture Science employee. In the post credits scene, an incredibly weak Abby is seen walking through the parking lot of Aperture Science (where it is now raining), collapsing, and (presumably) dying, as the screen fades to black. The last thing she sees is the G-Man, standing in the booth and adjusting his tie. Her fate is left unknown, although it's almost certain that she dies from blood loss.}}

Awards
* Portal: Prelude won third place in ModDB's Mod of the Year 2008.

Trivia
Though other female characters are mentioned, all of the employees the player sees in the mod are men and have nearly the exact same design, excluding the party hats near the end of the game. The only exception is an unnamed female employee wearing a face mask seen dragging Abby out of GLaDOS's room during the ending cutscene.

The G-Man from the Half-Life series is also seen many times in this mod, possibly to warn Aperture Science of "unforeseen consequences".

Portal: The Flash Version is a two dimensional game made with Adobe Flash based on Valve's Portal. It features the same environment and testing elements as Portal does, while even introducing some new features of its own. This game has also been recreated into the Portal Software Development Kit (Source SDK) and released as a Map-Pack. Some of the levels are included in the XBOX Live Arcade version of Portal, Portal: Still Alive. Some of the levels and mechanics used in this mod have also been "borrowed" over into a few other Map-Packs, or "Mods". This can most commonly be found in the Portal: Prelude mod, which uses the Electricity Field and a few of the levels used in the flash version.

Unfortunately, since the Flash plugin has been deprecated and disabled across browsers at December 2020, this game is now unplayable. Unless the user has an old version of Flash installed into the computer and then download the files and play it offline. Flashpoint or Ruffle can also be used.

Overview
The game starts with the words "Good morning subject 15837. It is time to begin your test." after which the first "task" (which is what the game familiarizes the test chambers as) starts with the use of the ASHPD or Portal Gun. The text on top of the screen suggests that the subject might not be familiar with the facility, but explains that they need to exit the rooms. The first task where the player can be killed in is Task: 10, where a ledge the player needs to Portal over is introduced. The first encounter with a dangerous mechanic happens in Task: 11, with a modified "Crusher" used in the trailer for Portal. Most of these tasks do not require precise timing, except for a few tasks featuring the High Energy Pellet (known as Combine Balls in the Half-Life Universe) or the dangerous "Electricity Field", that lights up for four seconds at a time and then pauses for three seconds.

Items and Mechanics
The game uses most of the mechanics that are used in the original Portal, but it also uses some scrapped and totally new mechanics as well. Here is a list of the mechanics that weren't used in the original Portal but made it to Portal 2 from the flash version. Portal: Still Alive, being largely based off of the MapPack and thus the Flash Version, includes all of the features introduced in those titles.
The Underground is a video series animated by Gleb Lvov and formerly produced by Machinima. In it, there is a core called the Interview Core who hosts a talk-show where "the rejected are respected and the best-case has no place." It takes place in two forgotten locations within the Aperture Laboratories. Currently, there are nine released episodes, and features a cast consisting of new cores, a turret band, the Mainframe, the Party Escort Bot and several others.
Trivia
* The Underground is written by Gleb Lvov, Mitchell McLeod, and Andrew Walker.
* The Paranoia Core is an interpretation of a cut personality core from Portal 2. While non-canon to the Portal universe, this core also makes an appearance in the game Poker Night 2 as GLaDOS' bounty prize item.
*The first five episodes of The Underground were released within a short time of each other in July 2011. The sixth episode was released in late September 2013. Since its release, Gleb's YouTube channel was shut down, canceling the series as a whole for a time. However, the series has since been revived on Gleb's new channel ] during early 2021.
*The Mainframe is based on an early concept art of GLaDOS.

Cores (also referred to as spheres, personality cores/spheres, or Aperture Science Artificial Personality Constructs) are machines designed to house advanced artificial intelligence, mostly unique for their ability to express emotions. Cores generally come in two varieties: spherical and input. Spheres are the standard form, used as a standalone body for Personality Constructs and in android bodies like Atlas'. Input cores, by contrast, are elliptical in shape and are used for the turrets and in android bodies like P-Body's. Spherical cores that do not have limbs are generally attached to management rails in the Aperture Science computer-aided Enrichment Center.

Function
Developed by Aperture Science technicians, GLaDOS is the earliest known personality core - specifically designed for becoming the Enrichment Center's overseer. The next cores developed were given the purpose of counteracting GLaDOS' psychotic behavior (such as flooding test chambers and other vital parts of the facility with neurotoxin) by integrating with her subconscious and altering her personality.

Often present in the form of spherical shapes, these cores are a more simplistic design as their purpose had been more at hand instead. This contrasts with the majority of the designs of Aperture androids in the Enrichment Center that are personality core-based such as Atlas (enclosed core design), P-body (core inputs), and turrets (also core inputs).

__TOC__
Clr

Personality cores
As the name implies, each core has its own unique personality and behavior, which can be incorporated into the central core when they are physically attached to it. Most cores were unneeded and deactivated.

The general form of a personality core is a large, spherical construct roughly a foot in diameter resembling an eyeball, containing sensors (with the "eye" presumably being the core's camera), two handles (possibly dating from when humans had to transport and handle them manually), and other equipment, such as ports to hold them onto a security rail for them to move on, or to plug into the central computer. The cores in Portal 2 also have eyelids.

Central Core
GLaDOS

The central core is the highest rank of all Aperture Science Personality Cores in the Enrichment Center, given to the core hardwired into the enormous robotic body in the Central AI Chamber.

A central core has the power to control and regulate the entire Enrichment Center, including the camera feeds, test chamber assembly and storage, turret production lines, and neurotoxin.

GLaDOS, who was designed with the sole purpose of being the central core herself, has her own unique shape that is quite different from the other personality cores, with an oblong white "body", black "face", and a yellow "eye".
Morality Core

The morality core is one of the more important cores attached on GLaDOS in Portal. It is a core with a purple "eye" and two dots just beneath it.

Unlike other cores, and much like Chell, the morality core is mute.
It rambles on about an odd recipe for a rather unique kind of cake,
The last core attached to GLaDOS is the anger core. It has a red "eye" with eight dots beneath it. It is also referred to as the "emotion core" and the "aggressive core". Rather than speak, the Core snarls and growls ferociously at Chell. (These snarls and growls were later used in Valve's game Left 4 Dead, which featured the same actor, Mike Patton, as the infected.)

{{spoiler|It was thought that this would prevent her from killing the scientists when activated and improve the operations of the facility. Due to technical difficulties over time, a core may be detected as a corrupted core and would be subject to disposal. However, if the corrupted core is the central core, a substitute core must be present in a core receptacle in order to initiate a core transfer. Central core corruption will not be detected if another core is not present. This is because other cores would not usually be present, except for core transfer. Once a substitute core is found, both cores must agree or disagree on the core transfer procedure. If one agrees while the other disagrees, the transfer process cannot occur unless a Stalemate Resolution Associate is present in order to press the stalemate resolution button, which will initiate the core transfer process once the Associate has returned to the Central Chamber.

All three Corrupted Cores are voiced by Nolan North. Each of their corruption levels is 25%, as indicated according to the Announcer when they are attached to Wheatley. And because the corruption level was already at 25% when the final fight with Wheatley started, it may be surmised that Wheatley himself is also a Corrupted Core.

GLaDOS was 80% corrupt when she was replaced in the game by Wheatley. Due to her behavior change after being put in the potato and then "reinstalled" at the end of Portal 2, it may be surmised that this reduced her own corruption to 0%. This change in GLaDOS (as well as Wheatley's behavior) further indicates that when a core is corrupt, it becomes irrational, in other words, "crazy" or "insane" by human standards, and even paranoid and homicidal.
Its key personality trait is its often-repeated desire to travel to outer space. The Final Hours of Portal 2 reveals Valve's inspiration for the Space Core: an Oregon Coast Aquarium ad with a goldfish rapidly and repeatedly humming, blurting, and stating that he would like to go to the aquarium, much like the Space Core does.

Another core found in Old Aperture claims to be Cave Johnson and pleads for help. Once the player does though, Cave accuses them of "slacking off". The core's eye is also square-shaped compared to other core eyes.

Trivia
* The bomb model used in Portal 2 is named 'personality_sphere_angry' within the game files, suggesting the Anger core was to make an appearance in the sequel.
** The bomb model also possesses similar textures and various typical personality core animations that can be viewed in the Model Viewer in the Authoring Tools. These include a stationary animation, a test animation where the core aimlessly looks around, and an angry animation where it twitches violently.

* In early screenshots released prior to the Portal 2 E3 teaser trailer, the texture of personality cores were yet to receive detailing and minor scratches, as the textures of the plating were matte white. Since then the textures have been greatly improved, and compared to Portal, the Cores from then to the retail version have a wider range of emotions.

* Poker Night 2 features a bounty price by GLaDOS called the "Paranoia Core," who behaves similarly to the Fact Sphere describing numerous events as well as being paranoid.

* Where the corrupt cores are first encountered in Portal 2, another core is being held above to illuminate them, moving weakly which confirms it is active. This core never makes another appearance and has no lines. Upon closer inspection inside reveals that it is an Adventure Sphere reskin, with the eye aperture constricted.

* Personality cores that serve basic tasks are surprisingly nice and polite, including sentry turrets, the Oracle Turret, and frankenturrets, proved by their voice lines, proof being that one of them refers to Chell as "lady".
** But free-thinking cores (such as Wheatley, Adventure Core) do not.

* The morality core has one dot on each side, and it's the first core to be detached and incinerated. The curiosity core has two dots (although on only one side), and it's the second core to be detached. The intelligence core has three dots on each side, and the anger core has four.
Aperture Tag: The Paint Gun Testing Initiative is a Portal 2 modification featuring gameplay focussing around the use and manipulation of the gels featured in Portal 2.

Story
The events take place after the events of Portal 2's cooperative campaign's Mobility Gels course, and before the events of the Art Therapy course, in the Aperture Science Facility, while GLaDOS had finished building the Aperture Science Paint Gun. A test subject wakes up in an Aperture Science Extended Relaxation Center's restroom ready to begin their test. They are introduced to Nigel, a personality core and his test associate. He then is put through a series of tests featuring the Aperture Science Paint Gun, Aperture Science's final product. When the testing is over, Nigel was surprised that there was someone to complete every single test chamber and thinks that he is the proper one to deactivate the old Aperture Laboratories Stability Stable Energy Reactor (ALSSER), the energy supply of Aperture Science, as a new one was built. Nigel is very surprised that he made it through so easily and decides to put him through another round of tests.
In addition, 48 challenge maps and 6 advanced test chambers are included with the mod.

Abby then briefly wakes up to see a scientist trying to reason with GLaDOS, but is immediately killed with a laser just before she floods the room with neurotoxin. Succumbing to the neurotoxin, Abby blacks out, and awakens to being dragged out of the chamber by a female Aperture Science employee. In the post credits scene, an incredibly weak Abby is seen walking through the parking lot of Aperture Science (where it is now raining), collapsing, and (presumably) dying, as the screen fades to black. The last thing she sees is the G-Man, standing in the booth and adjusting his tie. Her fate is left unknown, although it's almost certain that she dies from blood loss.}}

Input Cores, by contrast, are elliptical in shape, and are used for the Turrets and in android bodies like P-Body's. Spherical Cores who do not have limbs are generally attached to management rails in the Aperture Science computer-aided Enrichment Center.

__TOC__

Personality Cores
As the name implies, each core has its own unique personality and behavior, which can be incorporated into the central core when they are physically attached to it. Most cores were unneeded and deactivated.

The general form of a personality core is a large, spherical construct roughly a foot in diameter resembling an eyeball, containing sensors (with the "eye" presumably being the core's camera), two handles (possibly dating from when humans had to transport and handle them manually), and other equipment, such as ports to hold them onto a security rail for them to move on, or to plug into the central computer. The cores in Portal 2 also have "eyelids".

Central Core
GLaDOS

The Central Core is the highest rank of all Aperture Science Personality Cores in the Enrichment Center, given to the core hardwired into the enormous robotic body in the Central AI Chamber.

A central core has the power to control and regulate the entire Enrichment Center, including the camera feeds, Testing Chamber Assembly and Storage, Turret Production Lines and Neurotoxin.

GLaDOS, who was designed with the sole purpose of being the central core herself, has her own unique shape that is quite different from the other personality cores, with an oblong white "body", black "face", and a yellow "eye".

The Morality Core is one of the more important cores attached on GLaDOS in Portal. It is a core with a purple "eye" and two dots just beneath it.

Unlike other cores, the Morality Core is mute.
The second core attached to GLaDOS is the Curiosity Core. It is the core with an orange "eye" and four dots beneath it. It has a tendency to constantly ask questions, ranging from its surroundings, to Chell, to where it is going.
GLaDOS' third core, the Intelligence Core, has a blue "eye" with a huge pupil with six dots beneath it. GLaDOS does not make references to Cake in Portal 2, and it is presumed that this is because the Core was destroyed in Portal.}}

The last core attached to GLaDOS is the Anger Core. It has a red "eye" with eight dots beneath it. It is also referred to as the Emotion Core. Rather than speak, the Core snarls and growls ferociously at Chell. (These snarls and growls were later used in Valve's game Left 4 Dead, which featured the same actor, Mike Patton, as the infected.)
Wheatley, also known as the Intelligence Dampening Sphere, is portrayed as bumbling, chatty, desperate when things did not catch up to his expectations, and often hesitant. He is the first character to have interacted with Chell in the game, and is one of many cores seen awakening at the end of Portal.

Clr

Corrupted Cores
Due to technical difficulties over time, a core may be detected as a Corrupted Core and would be subject to disposal. However, if the corrupted core is the Central Core, a substitute core must be present in a core receptacle in order to initiate a core transfer. Central Core Corruption will not be detected if another core is not present. This is because other cores would not usually be present, except for core transfer. Once a substitute core is found, both cores must agree or disagree to the core transfer procedure.

Each of their corruption levels are 25%, as indicated according to the Announcer when they are attached to Wheatley.

This change in GLaDOS (as well as Wheatley's behavior) further indicates that when a core is corrupt, it becomes irrational, in other words "crazy" or "insane" by human standards, and even paranoid and homicidal.

The Space Sphere is one of three active, corrupted cores. It speaks rapidly, and possesses an unhealthy obsession with space.
The second corrupted core, the Adventure Sphere (or as he calls himself, Rick) speaks like a stereotypical "tough guy". {{spoiler text|Upon seeing Chell, he starts to swoon over her. The Fact Sphere is the third corrupted core. It constantly states several random, twisted and not entirely true "facts" related to history, the current situation, as well as apparent facts about how amazing and handsome it is.
During the events of Portal, GLaDOS refers to the Party Associate As Chell did not follow GLaDOS' instructions to "place the device on the ground, then lie on [her] stomach with [her] arms at [her] sides" which was described as the "party escort submission position", it is presumed that the Party Escort Bot

These cores use a model similar to the original Portals with no exposed sides (except for one in the back) and a simple design, but with a thicker outline, more detailed eye and multiple different patterns, as well as a crash test logo on the side. The internal mechanism is the main difference, consisting of a sphere with circles of light moving based on how the core speaks.
Clr

LEGO Dimensions
Cores act as a collectible in this game, requiring certain characters to do tasks to find them.

An "Amorality Sphere" is featured in this game which carries out functions completely opposite to the Morality Sphere, which also allows GLaDOS to employ dangerous tools (such as electricity) on Batman, Wyldstyle, and Gandalf.

Another core found in Old Aperture claims to be Cave Johnson, and pleads for help. Once the player does though, Cave accuses them for "slacking off". The core's eye is also square shaped compared to other core eyes.

Trivia
* The bomb model used in Portal 2 is named 'personality_sphere_angry' within the game files, suggesting the Anger core was to make an appearance in the sequel.
** The bomb model also possesses various typical personality core animations that can be viewed in the Model Viewer in the Authoring Tools.

This core never makes another appearance, and has no lines. Noclipping inside reveals that it is a second Adventure Sphere, with a dilated pupil.

* Personality cores that serves basic tasks are surprisingly nice and polite, including Sentry Turret, Oracle Turret and Frankenturret, proved by their voice lines, proof being that one of them refers to Chell as "lady".
** But free thinking cores (such as Wheatley, Adventure Core) do not.

*
* Avoid GLaDOS' attacks. When she is swinging you in the air, avoid the items. When she is throwing a circular blue lasers on the floor, jump over these. When she is throwing a blue laser on you, take cover.
* Don't forget there is a Manhack too.
* GLaDOS is able to grab you the Morality Core. When you have the opportunity, take the Morality Core, climb up the stairs around GLaDOS and place it on the spot.

A series of cutscenes starts. From here on, no user interaction is required.
* Upon attachment the Morality core does not make any change to GLaDOS' morality and she continues the attack, she grabs Abby with the anti-gravity force and slams her into a wall, knocking her unconscious and almost killing her.
* Abby briefly wakes up to see a scientist trying to reason with GLaDOS, but is immediately killed with a laser just before she floods the room with neurotoxin.
* Succumbing to the neurotoxin, Abby blacks out, and awakens to being dragged out of the chamber by a female Aperture Science employee wearing a face mask.
* The credits roll.
* An incredibly weak Abby is seen walking through the parking lot of Aperture Science (where it is now raining), collapsing, and (presumably) dying, as the screen fades to black. The last thing she sees is the G-Man, standing in the booth and adjusting his tie, her fate left ambiguous.
* Place the cube on one of the two empty buttons, then go on the last one.
* Enjoy the mess then use the path that Peter opened. You are now in the maintenance areas.
* Shoot a portal on the angled panel and the other near you then go through. Before touching the ground, place the same portal as the previous under you.
* With the momentum you gained, you should reach the upper floor facing the angled panel. Take the cube and come back at the bottom.
* Put the first portal in the alcove and go through the other portal with the cube. Use the two cubes as stairs to reach the hole above the alcove.
* Knock out the Turrets carefully using portals, then go to the door at the bottom of the room.
* Quickly, open the door, move forward, take the turret and vaporize it with the Material Emancipation Grill.
* Go in the lift and push the little red button.
