In 1953, Cave Johnson created Aperture Fixtures, a shower curtain manufacturer. The precursor to Aperture Science, he selected the name because it 'makes the curtains sound more hygienic'. He became a billionaire after winning contracts to manufacture shower curtains for the U.S. Military.

Aperture Science Innovators
During his career in science, he called upon the wealthy and powerful to join his cause for the future of science. He also employed top scientists and other staff who were dedicated to the field, such as Caroline, and those lacking common sense for the dangers inherent in scientific experimentation.

Aperture Laboratories
Aperture Science
At some point during the 1980s, Cave Johnson had renamed the company to Aperture Laboratories, a name that would be known far into the future. However, the number of willing test subjects had dwindled over the years, and out of desperation, employees and random strangers were pulled off the streets in order to be a part of the testing. The technology had advanced greatly, and robots had started to replace human employees. These employees then become unfortunate victims in Cave's quest for the future of science.

{{spoiler text|During his final days, Cave stated that he had tried to purchase a number of "moon rocks". However, his last few recordings indicated that these acquired "moon rocks" were toxic, and resulted in a fatal illness. He explained that he contracted the illness when, in one of his wild ideas, he was grinding moon rocks together in the name of science in order to form a new type of substance called the 'Conversion Gel', most likely named due to its ability to serve as a portal conductor and allow portals to be placed on any surface. As the symptoms of his terminal illness became more severe however, he decided to re-purpose the 'conversion gel' to create new portals that would hopefully leech the poison out of his system.

His attempts to cure his affliction failed, and with little hope of a cure, he instructed his engineers to start research on artificial intelligence (AI) and brain mapping in the hope that his brain could be downloaded into a computer. Cave also stated that they "should've been doing this 30 years ago". Fearing that he would die before the release of the technology, he left instructions that his secretary Caroline should take charge of Aperture Science. He stated that he knows that "she will decline at first or feel she can't do it", which he followed up with "force her to do it if you have to". It is presumed that Caroline was selected due to her devotion scientific progress, a trait admired by Cave, and also due to her close relationship with Aperture's founder. It is unknown what became of Cave himself, but it is presumed that he fell victim to his illness and, ultimately, to science.}}
Turrets serve as one of the main obstacles in the Portal series. Armed with unlimited ammunition and deadly accuracy, they will attempt to kill the player on sight.

Turrets are voiced by Ellen McLain.

Sentry Turret
Sentry Turrets appear as miniature tripod robots that appear in the Portal series. They are incapable of independent movement, but can open each side of their chassis (their 'arms') horizontally in order to reveal two gatling guns. The central part of the chassis holds their red 'eye', which emits a targeting laser.

When Turrets are unaware of the player's presence, they will maintain a standby state and will remain motionless with their guns retracted. Moving into their angle of sight however, will cause Turrets to deploy their guns with a voice line before opening fire. They will continue to fire until the player is dead or moves out of sight. If the latter occurs, Turrets will briefly search for the player (as indicated by the movement of the targeting laser), after which they will revert to a standby state.

Turrets can be avoided, disabled or destroyed in a number of ways. The most common method is knocking them over, causing them to flail and fire wildly before deactivating. This can be done by picking them up and dropping them, or using any object to push them. Additionally, the Thermal Discouragement Beam or Emancipation Grid can be used to completely destroy them. It should be noted that once a Turret has been knocked over and deactivated, restoring it to an upright position will reactivate it and the Turret will function normally once again.
Clr
Rocket Turret
The Rocket Turret is a unique enemy in Portal. It appears as a personality core outfitted with a rocket launcher. Upon activation, it will slowly lock onto Chell and emit a sound before launching a rocket.
Clr
Defective Turret
Defective Turrets, also called "Crap Turrets" by Wheatley, are incomplete, ammo-less versions of Sentry Turrets. Unlike normal Sentry Turrets, Defective Turrets speak in a masculine, less robotic voice.

They are harmless to Chell, many times making comments such as "If anyone asks, I killed you". Their voice lines seem to imply they are blind, but they are still aware of Chell's presence. They are first encountered in Chapter 5: The Escape.
Clr
Frankenturret
Clr
Animal King Turret
The Animal King is a unique turret that is only referred to in an Aperture Science slideshow entired "Animal King Takeover" in Chapter 1: The Courtesy Call. The Turret is considerably larger than its Sentry Turret brethren, and appears to operate in exactly the same way. It can be distinguished from ordinary turrets by its immense size, crown and leopard skin-detailed chassis. In the context of the slideshow, the Animal King Turret is used as an example of an entity or organisation capable of taking control of Earth which "".

I thought I should ask about thi first. In the first test chamber with the discouragement redirection cube, if you get back to the corner where the cube drops, wheatly will pop out of a pannel in the wall and if you are quick enough you can grab him and carry him through the rest of the test chamber. He disappears after you enter the elevator. Is this fine for me to post in the trivia section?CatherineJV 05:40, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
