::::I'll mention it to everyone. :) And it's not too late; our host has said that we have infinite space as long as we pay the monthly fee, but since our wiki is still very much in infancy (hell, it's a ZYGOTE right now), we'd lose next to nothing I suppose. Backpack

Hello. I had a mistake: I created 2 incorrect pages about my backpack. Please, delete all incorrect pages. I put link to my backpack on "automaticly-updated Item checklists". Hope, it is OK.
P.S. The ithems in my backpack on that page are incorrect. Help, please.--Shimku Portal Companion Cube.png · (Talk) 17:58, 14 June 2011 (UTC)

Video walkthroughs

Could I make some for portal :3 The preceding unsigned comment was added by Medibee (talk) • (contribs)

There are very high video-quality requirements for walkthroughs so not everyone can render them quite properly. In fact, since Portal and Portal 2 are relatively small games, I was hoping to do both, and yes, Portal as well. I just did Portal 2 first because more people are interested in a Portal 2 walkthrough than a Portal 1 right now, but once that is done I'll get on Portal 1. Anyway, join IRC if you want more — Wind 18:01, 20 June 2011 (UTC)

Of the two, make one

http://theportalwiki.com/wiki/Portal_2_Chapter_1_Test_Chambers_3_%26_4

Look. 3 and 4 there are different signs. I think we should make one, because that looks not nice

Added: and why chambers 7 and 8? That's just 7 chamber!

CakeJohnson 09:13, 26 June 2011 (UTC)

Because both the 3/4 and 7/8 are in the same map file. Check the wall in the room where Wheatley is in the 7/8th map — Wind 23:08, 26 June 2011 (UTC)
So, maybe we can create ONE sign, not two. Two looks not nice. CakeJohnson 08:53, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
True, maybe if it said "7/8" right there on the infobox, but to do that, we need a picture of the "/" in the same style as the numbers. Would you be able to create that? o: — Wind 16:12, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

Why pages about test chambers of Portal are deleted?

Alexander 10:16, 20 July 2011 (UTC)

Test chamber articles should not be published until they have a video released for them. I'm currently doing the videos for the Portal 2 walkthrough, but I will do the one for Portal 1 after Portal 2 is done. In the meantime, there are some almost-ready versions of the Portal chambers here that you can edit. Thanks~ — Wind 15:24, 20 July 2011 (UTC)

Test chambers

How can I make walkthrough videos for Portal Test Chambers in Russian language? Alexander 19:41, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

If you mean Portal 1, then hold on, let them be created in English first. The Portal 2 videos, however, are almost done in English, so I'd start there.
Now, there's a few ways to go about this:
  • Either the walkthrough is a different version of the English one, with a Russian translators playing through the game and recording videos, same way as the English one
  • Either the walkthrough uses the same demos as the English one. Then, I think that the voice files will be replaced by the Russian ones. This means that the video will be exactly the same, but with Russian voices. This will be consistent and be fully translated, but it comes with the limitations of having to use Source Recorder (which is hard for some parts of the game)
  • Either the English walkthrough videos are subtitled in Russian. I am currently working on a way to do that automatically, using the game's Russian subtitles files. This way, it will be very easy to have a Russian walkthrough, and the voice will be in English with Russian subtitles. This method can also be used for other languages.

So, what do you prefer? — Wind 20:12, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

I think the first way is better than other two. So video will be more like the game. The second way is rather hard. And voice lines may be replaced incorrectly. What about the third way? Hearing voice is certainly better than reading subtitles. But there's a very small disadvantage using the first or the second way. The voice that sounds in Russain language differs from original one. And some voice effects (changing voice, garbles) aren't shown.
Alexander 21:04, 29 July 2011 (UTC)
The thing with the first way is that it's the longest and hardest one, because it involves re-doing everything that was done for the English part of the wiki. You're free to do it if you want to, but I'd suggest gathering other people to help you along, because it is a very long task (took me months).
In the meantime, I've been working on a subtitling tool (you can see it here) which will allow us to make captions for sections of the video, associate them with a sound file, and from that map it to other languages. So what can be done is to use the third way (english with russian subtitles), then as the real Russian walkthrough progresses, replace videos with it. Does that sound like a good plan? — Wind 23:58, 29 July 2011 (UTC)
Yes? It's good idea. I've recorded a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDayHXyy9xc . Is it good walkthrough video? Alexander 21:17, 30 July 2011 (UTC)
Keep in mind that someone who needs a walkthrough of Portal 1 more than 4 years after its release is likely to be a person very new to video games. Because of that, it is important to make the walkthrough easy to understand and follow; that is why, on the Portal 2 walkthrough, all the camera movements are very slow (it makes it easier to follow). To an experienced gamer, this style of movement does look slow, but that's okay. So, in other words: Move the mouse slowly.
Another thing is pacing: it is important to move kind of slowly and give an overview of each room you enter. This is for several reasons:
  • It will be easier for someone to know which room you are in (since you look around the room)
  • It will be easier to follow
  • YouTube's thumbnails for a video are a choice between the image at 25% of the video, 50% of the video, or 75% of the video. If you take looks around the room as yu enter them, there is a higher chance that one of youtube's video thumbnails will be one of those moments, which will make a nice video thumbnail (Just a little bonus, hehe)
  • For test chambers, make sure you stare at the information panel (where it says the test chamber number) for at least 3 seconds
Last but not least is graphics quality. First, make sure to record videos with a resolution of ratio 16:9 (1280x720 preferably, or 1920x1080 if you can). This will make sure that the video occupies the entire video player, instead of having those black bars on the left and the right like this video has. Also, you can try to record at a higher graphics quality if you can, so that it looks better. If you can't, that's okay, but most importantly make sure it still looks smooth.
Thanks, and good luck :3 — Wind 21:36, 30 July 2011 (UTC)
Thank you for your comments. I'll try to do better.
P.S. Uploading videos takes very much time. For exsample, this video (two minutes) was uploaded in two with a half hours.
Alexander 22:06, 30 July 2011 (UTC)
Yes indeed~ It takes me from 4 to 14 hours to upload a walkthrough video, depending on the length of the video D: Slow connection + big files = long time. Don't worry about it though, take your time. No rush~ — Wind 22:07, 30 July 2011 (UTC)
I can't turn on 1280x720 resolution in the game. If 16:9 ratio resolution is needed I can enable only 856x480 or 848x480. Should I use again 1024x768 HD resolution or choose 856(or 848)x480 one? — Alexander 22:40, 30 July 2011 (UTC)
That's a shame :( I guess your monitor doesn't go to 1280x720. Do you know anyone who has such a monitor, or do you have another monitor that you could plug into your computer for that? If not, then I guess 1024x768 would be the best choice, but not very good still >: — Wind 22:42, 30 July 2011 (UTC)
No, I don't know anyone who can help me. Then I'll make not very good video. I hope less people will detect black bars. Also there is no black bar in fullscreen mode if watching people have NOT WIDESCREEN monitor. — Alexander 00:10, 31 July 2011 (UTC)
Aww :( If you want, I can ask the Russian translators of the Team Fortress Wiki to come and help. Do you want me to ask? :o And yeah, they don't show in fullscreen mode but they show when you view the page normally — Wind 01:00, 31 July 2011 (UTC)

On Windows Vista or 7, you can use the Snipping Tools to do that (Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Snipping Tool), which lets you select a rectangle on your screen to capture, and then lets you save it somewhere. On Windows XP, the most straightforward way is to press the "Print screen" key on your keyboard, then open Paint and press Ctrl+V. — Wind 19:57, 20 November 2011 (UTC)

Implementing TF2 Wiki-styled merchandise pricing

I've added all the needed templates (as seen here: User:Sven/Sandbox), added all the current prices of the merchandise to the pricing page (here), and am ready to update the Merchandise page itself. However, every item will reference a template (as seen in my sandbox) that needs to be created by a bot. Atlas and P-body articles

Since Atlas and P-body experience through the same events in co-op, wouldn't it be a better idea to have the two characters merged into one article like the Combine Overwiki did? Though I don't mind having two different character articles, just saying that it would be simpler and sort of more effective and on the go for readers. Regarding the recent "The Underground" addition, I'd like a precedent

The addition of the Machinima series makes me wonder how each "non-canon" article (such as The Underground, gameplay mods if they have unique characters, minor characters in Lab Rat) should/will be handled in the future. I'd normally take some examples from the TF2 Wiki, but as the TF2 Wiki doesn't seem to have this issue (no Machinima articles that I'm aware of) and the additional fact that we're a bit starved for content (I mean, Portal and P2 aren't exactly updated weekly...), I have no idea what to do. I don't want this place to get that "most of the page is pictures" feel that the OverWiki has.... Any advice? Would a "Non-Canon Character Nav" or something similar be enough? Requesting permission to borrow (ie: Steal) select images from this wiki

Due to the generally HQ of the images provided by this Wiki, I humbly request permission to make use of some of them on my community's mapping Wiki (Example page here: Right here). I realize I technically don't *have* to ask for the images, but as an act of good faith, I'd like to. ~Sven~ (talk) 21:20, 17 May 2012 (UTC)

That's fine as long as you respect the license on each image, and the license of the content (CC-BY-3.0, which basically just means you should mention where the stuff is from). But you do know there's quite a large section for that at the VDC, right?) — Wind 21:24, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
I *personally* am aware of that. It would seem that the other members of the (admittedly small) community (around 10 or so right now [the forum isn't done, itself]) want to venture into BIGGER things, and that apparently includes a wiki as well. Majority rules in favor of the wiki, and as such, we (apparently) are doing that. Thank you Wind. :D ~Sven~ (talk) 21:30, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
May I suggest the option of creating a mapping section on this wiki then? Would solve the hassle of copying stuff around (but I'm probably making this suggestion too late) — Wind 21:33, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
I'll mention it to everyone. :) And it's not too late; our host has said that we have infinite space as long as we pay the monthly fee, but since our wiki is still very much in infancy (hell, it's a ZYGOTE right now), we'd lose next to nothing I suppose. I'll mention it to them and see what they say. You sir, deserve all the science awards for your kindness. ~Sven~ (talk) 22:54, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
